Crimson>>So that's why you wanted the ibprofen! We really need to get to the library.

Everywhere is most gorgeous rain. Hometown had first rain after 47 days without, in the Willamette Valley this is a long-long-long dry spell. Am hoping roses survived. Saw pretty roses at Grant Park. Smallish rose garden, all tried and tested breeds. Must ask parents to send pictures of the RoseGardens back home.

Michael Korolenko <korry@ msn.com> Mon Sep 21 01:36:39 EDT 1998

For ember, quazy and others in the Seattle area who asked: we are having a screening of NIGHTERS, made by my "Making Movies" class, at Bellevue Community College - The Carlson Theater - on Saturday night, September 26th, at 8:00 pm. Sorry not to get back to you folks sooner, but I've had a 'ellish week and a half, and am finally almost fully recovered from some emergency oral surgery (just in time to begin teaching tomorrow - whooppee). Noticed Boiled In Lead mentioned in some of the posts here - BIL allowed us to use a number of their tunes in NIGHTERS. In any event - if any of you do show up, please feel free to introduce yourselves to me either before or after the showing. Should be a fairly informal event and you'll know me since I'm the guy who's gonna get on stage and thank some of the faculty and staff for supporting the project (I would guess this is the only state sponsored vampire film ever made). MK

Quazy <quasteymaha@hotmail.com> Mon Sep 21 01:48:17 EDT 1998

hmm wonder if i should feel dumb by following simple instructions to get meself added on to the ML and getting uh..rejected..twice :) oh well some kind soul will point me in the right direction

Cat <cat@cybergeek.net> Mon Sep 21 02:20:16 EDT 1998

Okay, I just caught up with the Mailing List, will try to catch up here in a bit. I love seeing all this activity on both list and board!!! Anadara, good to see you back; welcome to all others as well.

Was is Dallas this weekend visiting family and brother; good but exhausting. Meant to go to sleep much earlier, but didn't work out that way; am catching up and think story-ish thoughts. Best to you all,

Crimson <> Mon Sep 21 02:39:20 EDT 1998

quazy, will look into it...

Michael, ouch! oh, most sincere wishes of fast healing and health to you!

Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Mon Sep 21 09:08:17 EDT 1998

Quaz: unfortunately, because of the high amount of spam that comes from hotmail.com, as well as the tendency of their server to go down and cause nasty bounces all over the list, hotmail.com addresses are blocked from the ML. So, I would recommend getting a free account from somewhere else (myownemail.com is nice, or xoom.com) and trying again. Gomen nasai!

Crimson <JsBeret@hotmail.com> Mon Sep 21 14:14:27 EDT 1998

does that mean I should change, too, (from hotmail?)

Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Mon Sep 21 17:36:32 EDT 1998

Quaz, I just noticed your MUD remark. We actually got started building a Bordertown zone at AnimeMUSH (199.245.105.29 port 6260), but never finished due to an overwhelming lack of interest (read: players).

Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Mon Sep 21 17:46:23 EDT 1998

Well, hm, Crimson, if it let you sub, then it should let Quaz sub. I hate to say this, but 99% of the problems subscribers on any of my...6 or 7 MLs have, it's because they Did It Wrong. ;p So, Quaz, try again. Crimson, btw, some people do have hotmail set reject anyway, so now you know. *g*

Crimson <JSBeret@hotmail.lag/lag/lag/lag> Mon Sep 21 22:24:14 EDT 1998

thanks, Claris....

I think Imust have lost a six-leaf clover because today I just started feeling like trash. I'm definitely not in the best health, and way things are going (I feel too acutely sensitive to many things and every breath is like in a bodice...) I think I'm gonna be away a few days. Sapphire'll check in, of course, I'm going to finish the damned paper and go drink tea in bed.... may your days be full of what you want, and your nights full of what you wish...

Hiya folks! Crimson, get well soon! Healing Vibes are coming your way. Corva, you're new nest sounds delightful! Willow trees are lovely - like leafy drapery tapestries of cool, caressing shade. Perhaps your shy feathered freinds will begin chatting more once they get to know you? When we get there for RainyCon we'll have to pillage that tea drawer of yours, and have a kettle concert! And yes, chalk on the sidewalks in honor of the rpg!! Well, I'm in a creative/destructive mode right now- beseiged with ideas that threaten to undermine my sleeping schedule and energy level. But I've been sketching and designing and making notes all over the place, ideas coming fast and blossoming explosively. I'm working on conceptual stuff for our new game world, Seventh Sea, and it's a total blast! I get to design countries and places and cultures and characters and creatures and everything! Much fun! If only my brain would wait till decent daylight hours to go into hyper-mode. Ah well. Twas kind of nice to watch the blue morning creep between my blind slats as I feverishly designed armor and dragons. Got 5 hours of sleep. Now I better drink some caffine, go to work and attempt to get on a decent schedule again. Luv, Elly

Sapphire//Which, considering how much slower I'm getting this, means I'll be better sometime late next week. *sigh* I suppose I should be grateful I'm getting small doses rather than Crimson's misery. Don't think I'll run the 1.5 tomorrow.

Hello. and speaking of temps and get well wishes, is anyone else in L.A. feeling like the creeping-crud is creeping upon them? I woke up this morning and felt like a cold was coming on. (Pounding vit-C and echinacea dn mint tea as I write this...). Quite a few folks I know said they felt icky today... was wondering if it was a very local phenom or not. At least now I can curl up on the couch and read.. phew. Crimson & Sapphire, here's a get-well for you. I'll raise a glas 'o tea for you as well.... -argus

this will be short as my cat has decided this is the purrfect time to show me how much he loves me by curling up on me as i try to type! big hugs and well wishes for all those sick, getting sick or not yet fully recovered. Along with the echinacea I'd like to recommend usnea and golden seal for colds or infections. Something else which is supposed to work but is kinda strange is to put sliced, steamed onions on the soles of your feet! I've never tried it but I know a few people who swear by it! <

NRL <eiposte@earthlink.net> Wed Sep 23 22:55:10 EDT 1998

argus, got sick friday. Getting better now. I read once a little saying. "If you leave a cold alone it'll last seven long days. If you doctor it with herbs or medicines it'll go away in just a week." G'night all, and get well soon.

argus <tonecluster@eoithlink.net> Wed Sep 23 23:45:52 EDT 1998

NRL: Aha, just as I thought, its a scandal. Rats... that means it's taking over L.A. I don't know which is better.. the seven days or the week. Anyway, thanks... at least I know to consider some serious preventive medicine. anadara: thanks for the tip on the echi. Sounds good. One thing I swear by: a bowl of light pasta served in a bath of dark olive oil and 8-10 finely chopped cloves of garlic and some red pepper flakes. One doth tend to stinketh, but no self-respecting germ will live in a neighborhood as full of garlic as your bloodstream becomes, and your temp goes up a half-a-notch which makes it a tad too balmy for said germs. Or so I like to believe. At any rate, the garlic works magic. -arg

Pollux <Pollux@aol.com> Thu Sep 24 00:09:47 EDT 1998

Feeling not so well in a way altogether different than the germ based ailments many of you seem to be suffering from.....went to that concert last night ready to take some of the best damn concert photos in recent history.....spent many hours on line in order to be able to get the right positioning inside.....all this only to end up in a rather unpleasant fight with a scalper who tried to rip me off.....not stopping to give rational thought to the situation (such as considering whether or not he happened to be working alone or if perhaps he might be armed) i reacted with my emotions (fun to watch for bystanders i'm sure but not a particularly smart decision on my part).....anyhow, i'm actually trying not to dwell on this, so perhaps it is not the best of ideas for me to be fanning the flames by writing about it.....hopefully it will not add to my determination to go back there for tomorrow night's show and turn the tables by catching HIM off guard this time.....something i have been seriously considering i am afraid.....but hopefully writing this will just let me get it out of my system and consequently keep me out of trouble.....well, that's enough from me for now.....sorry to burden you all with this business but thank you for listening.....hope you all feel better soon ---Pollux

Cat <Cat@cybergeek.net> Thu Sep 24 04:17:30 EDT 1998

Ah, yes. The change of seasons is upon us; I can tell from all the coughing and wheezing. This last month has been a big transition in all sorts of personal ways too, but I think (I hope) that it's starting to settle down. Here's hoping that those who need to, feel better soon, and those who are healthy stay that way.

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Fri Sep 25 12:19:17 EDT 1998

Ah yes, Halloween is a wonderous thing!! This year one of the guys at work is getting married on that magical night when the ghosts walk among the living and the monsters hunt for sweets. It should be fun! Last year we had a "come as your favorite god" party. My freind Dave and I came as the 2 modern gods that most folks won't admit to worshipping but do - Sex and Money. He was in a top hat and tails with a monacle a-la the Monoploy guy and I was in a sexy black seaquinned torch-singer dress slit up to the equator. It was great fun. But my fave costume of the night was our buddy Rich's, who wore a toilet seat around his neck and carried a plunger sceptor as the Porcelain God. It was great!! I dunno if there's gonna be a costume party around this year or not, but if so, I better find out soon and start getting an outfit together! To bad we can't all get together for Halloween - a BTown masquerade would be a blast!! Luv, Elly

I'm going to be doing the mulitple costume routine. Unfortunely the only one I'm really sure of is a cheerleader rig as part of my sorority. Perky Goth will not be a cheerleader, neither will a couple other people, Coaches! Personally, I get enough painkiller for the headaches shouting causes, I'm good.

Cat, mask sounds great.

Crimson <> Sat Sep 26 14:47:31 EDT 1998

halloween costume?
Hmmm, the medieval dress just doesn't *feel* like a costume anymore, but Perky Goth will steal my black velvet/red velour lining opera cloak, sure as the moon rises....
any suggestions on costuming?

Cat, as a fox.... sounds like it would be wonderfull.

corva <thecrownest@earthlink.net> Sun Sep 27 00:43:47 EDT 1998

this one has been wearring the same mask every Halloween for nearly a decade now. it/she is a blue lady half mask with leaves and berries. the costumes revole and change around her but she is always i as we go out on/with the night. the last two years, three?, have found me/us as the spirit of Sherwood to my Bear's Robin Hood...again? yes, most likely. Keep saying to myself that i am going to stop coming here and go and post at Claris' new board, but keep returning...used to have this problem with NYC.

Sapphire <I wanna go to sleep for my birthday.> Sun Sep 27 06:25:31 EDT 1998

Okay, just gaining some strength before typing up 5 C++ labs, a couple physics labs, an excel worksheet thing, and a Maple Worksheet before I get around to reading a book (Moral Mazes, very dense) before the test on it in my sociology class on Tuesday, while somehow at least glancing at my calculus book before the test on Monday. *gasp* Sometime tonight I'm going to a dinner, which is good, because otherwise I'm not eating. Then tomorrow it's m'18th b-day *grin* (I'm an adult, can't I take a nap?) Hopefully, I'll get to bed at like 8 because I have to be up on Tuesday by 630 to go to PT. Okay, need to stop thinking about that, going to reload the page and glance at random posts, then to work.

Perpeptually yours, Sapphire

Happy Birthday Sapphire! I'll stick you on the b-day list.

Last year I was a 'snake lady'. I took my python trick-or-treating with me, and wore my favorite velvet dress and a string of skull beads around my waist... that was definitely an interesting costume.>g< I don't know what's going on this year. My sisters are getting too old to trick-or-treat, so does that mean I can't dress up anymore? sigh.

Crimson <> Sun Sep 27 11:24:42 EDT 1998

happy 18th, sapphire! (better say it now in case I don't see you over the books we both have to study today)

Sid, if your excuses grow too old to trick-or-treat with... babysit! "Yes ma'am, I'll make sure he doesn't get into any trouble...." or just go out with a bunch of wacky friends your own age. I'm considering a crow from one of the comic books for this year. (The movie The Crow is only one of several comic series on it, and one has a female 'crow' with the coolest facepaint.) No idea where I'd go trick-or-treating, but it'd be fun to run around in all day. ;->

Cat, I just went and got out a big bulb of garlic and waved it in the air in the direction of Lawton, intoning, "Tea, lemon, honey, and garlic." Hope that helps. Get better quick!

Actually (and I blush to admit this) sometimes being sick--if one doesn't feel too disgusting--can be kinda nice. Having an excuse to slow down is good, and I'm not very good at just giving myself one if I'm "perfectly healthy," know what I mean?

Is it really strange that I've gained to older sibs since coming here?

Cat <cat@cybergeek.net> Thu Oct 1 00:53:32 EDT 1998

Grey>> Thanks. I actually went home from work early today (I was off yesterday)-- I was the only one there in the morning, but once they other two got there for afternoon, I asked if I could go and they said 'sure.' Very understanding, I thought. So I went home and slept, and dreamed-- long overdue for that-- and got up and started writing a big piece of something I've been meaning to get back to for a long, long time.

Yeah, I'm not *very* sick, and it was good (needed) to slow down-- but I still tire out fast when I try to do anything that takes energy, like writing.

Sapphire>> Only two?

--Cat

Sapphire <> Thu Oct 1 09:45:20 EDT 1998

well two I've started really thinking of as being siblings. Most of the people I know who are older have that, "Let's teach the young one, let's tease her" attitude, which is the one I have with my little brother. I guess you could say I have more....

Sapphire <who wrote last message while trying to french-braid her hair> Thu Oct 1 10:24:49 EDT 1998

Grey <Taco Hell, with Claris and Corva> Thu Oct 1 15:31:21 EDT 1998

Here's an interesting thought/question: Corva and I were talking about how "liberal" and "conservative" aren't adequate descriptors. Anyway, what would make someone "conservative" in Bordertown? Or "liberal?" Besides all the trueblood/human/halfie stuff, that is.

--Grey

corva <putting it away at the Hell> Thu Oct 1 18:19:17 EDT 1998

ergh, grey, this one thinks that it would well depend on what circles that the folks were playing in...where they hip or behind the times? following the push of the stream of things or moving against it? hmm, this will take some thought and some hot sauce! pass the hot sauce! where is TLO when you need her!?! ... conservative would mean simply following the old guard perhaps? liberal? it is all fucked up because some ideas that "belong to" one of those labels really have little to do with the meaning of the lable! Think i need some more chipotle(sp?) chili peppers here...

Sapphire <> Thu Oct 1 19:35:03 EDT 1998

Seeing as my mother is this earth-mommy type who calls herself closest to conservative (when she has to idenitfy herself like that), but is against the current policy makers, I have to agree that the labels are stupid.

Got to play "Find and Disarm the Nuclear Device" today, running around in uniforms, got a lot of "what are they doing?" looks from the civs. Fun, fun! Gasp! Too much running.

Off to the Alien meeting!

After leaving Crimson's boyfriend's room (where we went *after* the meeting) I ended up playing 4D chess, cool game, difficult, worse at 3am.

my wife and i (still getting used to that word! *LOL*) and a couple of friends were going to do the Scooby Doo gang, but no-one wants to play Velma *pout* dunno what i'm gonna do... prolly stick horns high on my head (my rapidly receding hairline allows for this! *G* put on some red powder, just to redden a BIT, and go as the devil.. actually, i might get a fat suit, dress as rush limbaugh and do the same... or a suit, pair of glasses and go as Ken Starr and do the same! crimson <umph> Sat Oct 3 01:41:41 EDT 1998

went to the symphony, walked in the rain to get to it and wet black velvet is very cold... music was wonderful, violin soloist a true prodigy...Maxim Vengerov of Russia, and our music students grinned a sthe violin player in our group turned from shy into happy idolizing babbler.
but it's been a strange few days; the members of Alien participated in or refused to stop me getting "slightly" smashed ( a project done for the sheer heck of "whaddya mean, you've never drunk before") at the meeting, and I am still regretting things that, in the sober cold day, are nothing at all but still hurt me... not that every member of Alien had their shirt off and we were piled on a couch, but that I was flirting with our president when I know he has a girlfriend (he was flirting back, but MY actions hurt my concience).
Ah, well, tis an experience I think I don't care to repeat. So I shall continue to work lights in a bar and not touch alcohol...and ignore jibes about working for free drinks. Is the purpose of shots to get the poison down without instinctive rejection at taste?
I'm off to see if I'm on a road trip tomorrow or going to a formal dinner and dance... I think I'd prefer the road trip...
Wear fortune like a coat, my friends, and may the moon light a long path, and the wind guide you where your soul wants to go...oak and ash and clover's luck on life's long road.

Crimson: My advice is to write it off as a learning experience. I can assure you that you're neither the first nor last to embarass yourself while 'under the influence...'

Sapphire>> Really sick is when I can't write at all. Also, back on the topic of military life, I did some math the other day and came up with the following: Carol and I have spent somewhere between 1/4 and 1/5 of our married life living in completely different cities b/c of the Army. Pretty scary realization, neh?

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Sun Oct 4 15:17:02 EDT 1998

What's an Alien meeting? (Okay, there's a lot of punch lines to that, but...) Crimson, I'm 35 years old and I've never had a full drink and I've never been drunk. Not from any religious convictions, just because I saw what it did to my friends and because I didn't like the taste. There were a few moments of rather nasty peer pressure and "friends" trying to spike my sodas, but now I find it's a great conversation starter and a way to make perfectly ordinary social drinkers feel uncomfortable and guilty. Hee hee hee. Don't let anybody push you. Take the steps you want to take when you're good and ready..... Conservative and Liberal in Bordertwon. Conservative in it's most basic sence means to me someone who believes that humanity is born bad and must be given a set of rules to live by. Liberal means the opposite. Someone who believes in the basic goodness of man and who thinks if you leave them alone they'll do alright by themselves. I think somewhere in the middle.. In Bordertown I would think that the people who want to maintain the old ways of life, (Human or Elvish) would be conservative, and those who are willing to get along with whatever combination of elf/human/whatever comes along would be Liberal. So the Packs and the Bloods are conservative, even though they hate each other. Well, off to work. Bye.

crimson <jsberet@hotmail.com> Sun Oct 4 22:47:14 EDT 1998

Alien Sound and Lighting Ltd. is the group I work with...we do lighting and sound for live bands, graduations, very large frat parties... excuse me, fraternity, and when it's kareoke night we're six miles away at a crewmember's house...I don't know. I had decided that if I should do such a thing, it would be with Alien 'cause I trust them more than my family. No one found any offense at any actions of mine that night that I've talked to, sort of a "well, that's it. Now you can get drunk, or stay sober and laugh at the drunks"... yeah, learning experience. Next time I'll stay sober and tease the drunk people...

And now for something completely different...I agree with NRL. Conservative seems the people who change not with the border... say the suburbs where people try to mimic reality, and up The Hill, and the gangs...
Cat>>ouch. Yeah, scary indeed.

Crimson - much thanks for the note and the clovers. A very nice surprise during a very stressful and busy week. School goes well except for one crazy SOB of a student in one class. Auditions moving along for a short film we're shooting late winter, early spring concerning an alternate earth (it's an earth where everything is exactly the same except that I'm really really rich - no, no - only kidding). Again, hope all's well with everyone, and thanks again, Crimson. You can audit my classes anytime. MK

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Mon Oct 5 02:58:22 EDT 1998

hiya kids! I think NRL's got a pretty fair overview of the liberal/conservative issue. There's an odd mix of rules and tradition and anrachic freedom in BTown. It's all in who and where you are, I guess. I met Argus this weekend - we hung out in Pasadena, ate great Vietnemese (sp??) food and slunk about in musty old bookshops. We had a blast, but the day got off to a rocky start when I blew a tire on the way. Everything worked out and I ended up leaving a message for him at the meeting place, saying: "Damn B-Town technology. Guess I need to get that spellbox recharged!". So it wasn't too bad. And it was seredipitous cuz we stumbled upon the bookshop I found my 5-year-quest copy of Borderlands at. We had to dodge ucla-crazed frat boys downtown, but we managed to survive. Micheal - what kinda trouble is this kid giving ya? You want I should kick his ass, boss? ;) Sounds like a nice alternate earth to me! And of course you invite all of us B-Towners to smashing hi-class parties, right? Crimson - I wouldn't worry too much about the drinking incident. We all have our experiemental moments, and if you learned something from the experience, it was well worth it. I don't drink much, but I occassionally indulge with good freinds in a safe environment. A lot of folks I know don't drink, and we're all cool with it. The key is moderation. It's cool to cop a pleasant buzz once in awhile but to drink yourself sick and stupid, is well... sick and stupid!! And indeed, you are not the first to have gotten a bit toasty and act less than refined and elegant! By the way, sober drunk-teasing can absolutely be a worthy and entertaining passtime! Just don't annoy the violent drunks - they can get a bit surly. Tea and hugs to all! Luv, Elly

Sapphire <> Mon Oct 5 13:34:17 EDT 1998

What's with the Btown 'burbs? Are they actually on the Border or are they nearby in the World? Can elves/halfies live there? (or rather, survive, if the politics wouldn't work) Do they have the same problems with magic/technology not working? Who lives there? Are they cookiecutter-on-a-pogo-stick subdivisions, or more like normal residental areas?

Trying persona idea...

Michael Korolenko <korry@msn.com> Thu Oct 8 01:26:58 EDT 1998

Elly - the kid ain't a kid; he's a guy almost 60 who got laid off by Boeing and was in the school under "worker retraining." He has a thing about women in power (he stalked one of the media instructors at one point) and why he hasn't been kicked out, only the state of Washington knows. He'll raise his hand at the slightest provocation and make statements with no bearing on either the lesson or reality. He's sickeningly sweet to people, then says awful things about them behind their back. By all means, kick his ass, but wear large boots - it's a very large ass. And the alternate earth might not be as nice as you think (the bomb not working forced us to invade the Japanese home islands - the War In The Pacific dragged on until the early 50s. There was a land war with Russia in '62, and a National Police Department is hoping to overthrow the civilian government in the U.S. Not a place to spend a holiday. MK

Jason <jasonshamblin@hotmail.com> Thu Oct 8 08:57:49 EDT 1998

A buddy of mine has just introduced me to the Borderlands phenomenon, and I have to say I'm quite taken with it! I plan on reading the books in the near future, but for the time being I'll have to settle for roleplaying in the Borderlands setting. My friend, and Gamemaster, has chosen the GURPS system in which to run our Borderlands game and I'm looking forward to it immensely! Anyone else out there done something similar? I have heard that Borderlands roleplaying is nothing new, but I haven't found any web resources for these games yet. Any ideas on where I can find this stuff? My GM ran a copy of the intro sections from the new anthology, "The Essential..." where it talks about the elvin-human relations, the gangs, the city layout, the music scene, etc. and I read the Danceland short story (which was *very* cool, BTW), so I feel that I have a "pretty good" feeling for what the Border is all about. I have chosen to play a Dead Warlock, however, about which precious little is said in what I've read this far, so if anyone has any roleplayig suggestions or general comments about the Warlocks, I'd greatly appreciate it. I am a veteran roleplayer, and could "wing it" comfortably, but the more I have to go on, the more enjoyable it will be. Thanks a lot for your help! - Jason

Grey <djwalker@telepath.com> Thu Oct 8 11:32:11 EDT 1998

Michael>> So sorry about your troublesome student. I just finished library school, and it seems like we had one of those in every class. I know it's difficult for older people to come back to school, but the way they always rag on us and talk about how much better behaved students were in their day, you'd think they could at least be semi-polite. And BTW, I'm not ageist, we also had older folks as students who were great, dedicated, and lots of fun. I *would* have to say, however, that I get a bit unreasonable where misogynists are concerned. Ok, rant is now over.

Hey there, Jason, welcome. I hate to say it, considering how they can be tricky to get, but your best info will come from earlier BTown books. There's quite a bit about Dead Warlocks in them. Try interlibrary loan at your public library, and used bookstores. The novels are NeverNever and Elsewhere by Will Shetterly and Finder by Emma Bull, and the short story antho's are Borderland, Bordertown, and Life on the Border, as well as the new The Essential Bordertown. Some folks here and elsewhere also have web sites with fanfic on them, particularly TechWolf and Stickman, but I just moved and haven't unearthed my list of golden websites yet. Help, anyone else? Good luck to ya.

Ethereally, Grey

Much thanks for the kind words, support, and ass-kicking boots. Sapphire - this fella, I don't think, is dangerous. He has the equivalent of tantrums, but seems to back down if he sees it's having no effect. He does tend to file grievances, however (these days, it seems if a student gets an A- or lower, he or she ends up filing a grievance), which is no big deal either. The guy isn't so awful (at least, not yet) that he's making life miserable, though the students will be doing group projects and I know this guy cannot work well in a group situation, so, I'm expecting other students to complain. In any event, this was not a great week (was it the full moon, bad tarot readings, inflamed sinuses or what - everyone I know seems to have experienced negative things this week) and this student's antics certainly didn't help, but I doubt there's any danger and thank you for your concern. Elly, Sapphire, Crimson all coming to kick some obnoxious guy's ass. Sounds like the plot of a B-town story. Or a Beavis 'n Butthead episode. Sending good thoughts to you all. MK

Speaking of Annachie, anybody heard from the lad lately? Day started off bad, got worse, then was saved from disaster at the last moment. Been waiting on a check from a guy I did some writing for. Didn't get it. Had to withdraw money from my account sending it into the negative so I could go to work. Work slow and long. Then, just as I dropped off my last client, I got stopped by a cop for speeding. 47mph in a 25mph zone. A ticket would mean I would lose my job and be damn close to losing my licence. I told this to the cop and wonder of wonders..... he let me go. I almost kissed him. Must have been on loan from the silver suits. G'night all. Sweet dreams.

Pollux <Pollux@aol.com> Mon Oct 12 22:48:05 EDT 1998

hi everyone.....i've heard the riddle in question before, but it was slightly different i think.....you are in a room with 3 switches.....there is another room with a lightbulb.....you can make only one trip to the room with the lightbulb and cannot see that room from the room you are in with the switches.....you must determine which switch turns on the light.....the answer is this (and do not read further if you are still trying to figure it out on your own) : turn on one switch.....wait several minutes.....turn that switch off.....now turn on another switch and leaving it on go to the room with the lightbulb.....if the light is on, then the switch you just turned on is the right one.....if the light is not on, feel it to see if it is warm.....if it is warm, then the first switch (the one you left on for a few minutes) is the right switch.....if it is not warm, then the last switch (the one you didn't turn on at all) is the right switch.....simple once you have the answer.....'night ---Pollux

Sapphire <ignore if you don't want the riddle answer> Tue Oct 13 00:29:28 EDT 1998

Oh, so that's how Annachie's riddle is really solved. Turn one on for a long time, then turn it off and turn another one on and leave it on, then go to the three light bulbs, one will be on (2nd switch) one will be off and hot (1st switch) and one will be off and cold (3rd switch)--ye gods I feel silly...

Thanks Pollux!

O, lovely lovely foggy morn! I wish it would stay like this all day. ;) I think the verb "Pop" at the top of this thing needs to be ammended to: "Be slowly dragged along". :) But it's worth the wait! Luv, Elly

HOLA!! just got my new hard drive, (6.4 gig) YAAY! so I will be back with a vengeance soon!
just emailed the people re: dancingferret.com, and they have REregistered it, so it should be in shortly.

Yay, Sticks! Good to see you back. NRL>> How're you doin'? Hope the money thing is straightening out for you. I hate being that close to empty--I'm rooting for you to GET THAT CHECK. Thanks be for decent police. Money (and the lack of it) can be so dull and dreadful. Rant, mumble... Pollux>> Thanks for solving the riddle. I was dreadfully tempted to set my mind to it, but that would've been a disaster, as I seem to have so little mind left these days. It's blowing around in bits like the leaves. Maybe that's not so bad, after all.

Ethereally, Grey

evening everyone.....just finished "essential bordertown".....what do you all think of it.....i was happy overall i suppose but thought it a little inconsistent.....oh well.....perhaps i'll be more positive on a day where i haven't been choked repeatedly.....Jiu-Jitsu has its drawbacks occasionally.....'night ----Pollux

Lyrin: I missed 12 hours of lecture by forgetting I had class all weekend. There goes my A in Foundations of Sociology right down to a F. >sigh< Biology: F Sociology: B. This is the worst semester of my life. I want to cry. I will sooner or later. Yay.

NRL, thank the powers that be, you were let off that ticket!!! I'm sorry, it is too expensive to live in La or Seattle. You must all move here to Kansas City, were I can set you up in local homes and apartments. (My apartment is only $325 a month! One bedroom, trees outside, park in walking distance, neat area. Artist area.)

trinlay <trin@dias.net> Wed Oct 14 00:02:26 EDT 1998

Hi everyone, I'm still alive but duties have multiplied... My zine is headed to the printer, probably this weekend. It'll have Cat's really awesome story in it, as well as a Shadowrun story and some other stuff. If you want a copy send $2 &/or something for the next ish to: T. Khadro p.o.box 24708 brown deer, wi 53224-0708 thanks

grey <djwalker@telepath.com> Wed Oct 14 09:51:31 EDT 1998

Angel>> So sorry to hear about your bad semester. I hope it gets better. Is there any way your foundations grade can be redeemed? Hang in there. Your paper crane and I said a prayer for you.

Pollux, I agree w/ you about TEB being inconsistent, but I actually thought that was a positive thing. It made it feel more like a compilation of stories from people living in a city. Even in my small town, the feel is drastically different depending on whether you live near the university or across the highway in the burbs.

Yay, Sticks! Can't wait for the Dancing Ferret's Grand Opening! How ya been, stranger? ;) Angel - chin up, lass! It's been a long time since I had to worry about grades, so I don't have any advice to offer you, but I know you're brilliant, so it shouldn't be too hard! Your neighborhood sounds lovely. I have to ignore my own white-trash surroundings - complete with big rigs, trailers up on blocks and chicken coops. :P But my rent's cheap, too, so I can't complain, and once I get inside it's not too bad! ;) Luv, Elly

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Thu Oct 15 13:13:07 EDT 1998

Sticks can you e-mail me that addy. There's a glitch in the way the board works for me. I can't link out once I'm here. And thanks and congradulations. Later, all.

Jingle <Crymmsun@aol.com> Fri Oct 16 05:15:10 EDT 1998

::Big huggles and smoochles to all as she bounces and jingles like mad.::
Finally!!!! I got here without timin' out!!!! WooHoo!!!!
Jason, been gamin' B-Town in GURPS since '86 when the books first hit the shelves! Love that system as it really lends itself well to role-play and not dice. I and my little group have been living and gaming in the B-Town world of the books and our own making since '86. It's a blast and so much fun that once we found Role-playing online we brought the Border to AOL an' now play the Bloods in it's online world. ::Grins.::
Right now I have a "Dead Warlock" character I play who is actually a founder of the group, so that makes her an ancient.
My take on it is this: There was a war between the Architect of Eternity's children in the newly burgeoning spired cities, it was a war over free will. Once won in bloody battle the victors remained and continued their work on the cities, the loser and his his followers were cast to the Depths. However there was a third faction, one which "chose" not to fight. For their choosing they were not allowed to stay yet could not be banished to the Depths. Instead they were given a third place, a borrowed world which they were to see to maturity. However, things don't always go as they are planned.
This third faction became enamoured and protective of the world they were borrowing and a pact was eventually made with the children that sprang forth from this world, the children of man. They, the third faction, were a fallen race. It was from the original fallen that the race of Fae were birthed.
The pact did not work out and as things go Magic (Faerie) was taken away from Life (World) but there was a group who fought hard through the eons to bring it forth once more (Warlocks).
When the struggle was over and the Change happened these ancients realized that what they had returned to was perhaps as bad as what they had been living in (Stagnation, predjudice, apathy) so they became apathetic as well and turned to alternate ways (pecca, suicidal mage machines) to relieve some of the badness they had over the winning of the battle. for a battle won is not always neccessarily a victory.
The character I play is an ancient an' one of the original fallen. She is, as all the ancients are (to me) one of the parents of the race of Fae. In actualtiy she is the Goddess Manon or Orddu (Goddess of Innocence, beauty and joy, Mistress of the dance), or Llilith or Fauna... one of the three sisters (Manon, Mab, Hellené [Eve]) who were set to guard the boundary of Faerie and the World when man's children first emerged and before the pact was broken.
She is in hiding so to speak.... not given to reveal who and what she is she goes by the name of Sid or Obsidian. She still watches over her charges, Truebloods and Fae with a mother's eye but she works as a tender in the Red Dragon Inn of Rhydin (AOL's world, I am a CL and work as an RDI Host under Sid's character). She came to Rhydin to consult with another ancient (Lankyn) and has stayed to keep an eye out on the Bloods who now reside within this realm.
Okay sorry for the long drawn out diatribe but I love Sid... she's a card... apathetic an' a functioning pecca junkie, wheel less mage bike an' all. She flies her colors proud and slings the best if not the bitchiest drinks and tender talk in town! An' the take on the "Dead Warlocks" is my own but if it sounds like somethin' any of you could work with be my guest.
Oh an' my muse came back from her vacation an' my writin' is once again in swing... hence the diatribe on Sid an' the "Dead Warlocks". ::Grins and tosses her head with a jingle.:: Oh an' Sid's hair is done all in elflocks which I picture as multi-colored hair wraps threaded through fetishes an' bells. Like my own!!!
Sid an' Fuchsia... my two online B-Town inspired characters both have wonderful pictures of them drawn by an excellent artist friend of mine who games with us online an' off. No places on the web for them but I have them on disk should anyone like to see them. ::Shameless plug.:: This friend will also consider commisioned work for a minimal fee and she is a B-Town fanatic so has the style!
Well, enough of my late night (early morn) ramblings. I have missed you all muchly an' am jus' happy I have the mail list to run to when the server times out on this board.
::Grins and huggles them all up tight smooching their cheeks then pouncing them with mirth and glee before bounding away jingles raucous in her wake.::

Nite and bright blessings.... May Faeries light your Path!
Jingle

A rainy, muddy, Ren. Faire is a fun Faire...! Unless you dyed your hair purple and it is trying to run. >grin< Went to Faire to do Christmas shopping. Got three people covered and bought myself yet another hat! Heh, I'm wearing it inside, I'm pathetic. Taking a break from Biology labs to write. Heck, I even had a blast evading sobriety checks on the way over (forgot my license...again). It was fun, secret-mission-like. Heh, have to love Van's sig. other for working nights, too, so I can drive over at 2AM. I'm getting a bit of help with the Biocrapology.

I can't find my link to Claris' board, can any provide it here? I think it might be in the same place as my license. Hey, and thanks to all of you for the well-wishing! Sticky, miss you, kiss you! She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed is a rare find! You two are very lucky!

Elly, I grew up in white-trash hell. I feel for you. Hell, my mom is an over-the-road trucker. My old house has had a Monza Spider on blocks for the better part of ten years... Eek.

Nathan, glad you got the card. ^-^ I have found post cards are very useful and easy to write. I love them. I write about 5 or more a week. I have one for Sid, but I can't find her address. I also have an oldie (Sept) for Grey I need to send!

HIya kids! Jingle, the BTown game sounds GREAT! God, I'd love to get this group together in one place and play a table-top game in BTown! Whoo hoo!! Sticks - cool man, send the portfolio when ya can. ;) Angel - ooog! Truckers! No offence to your Mom, but our office is around the corner from a huge truckstop and there's no way to avoid passing it and I have to deal with trucker stupididty everyday. :P Don't they teach the drivers that thier vehicles are BIG is trucking school? If I had a penny for everytime one of those idiots blocked traffic I'd be a millionaire. Between trucker idiocy and the train tracks, getting to work can be an adventure, to say the least. But at least we always have a viable excuse for being late to work. "Um...long train stopped on the tracks, and a truck was blocking both lanes - had traffic backed up for two blocks - took me 20 mins to get through the intersecition. Yeah, that's it ...that's why I'm late!" They'll believe it everytime, cuz it's usually true! Well, I'm off to paint goblins and zombies and Shadowlands baddies! Whoopee! {{{{{{{{BTowners}}}}}}}} Luv, Elly

Well, it's been a terrible couple of weeks. Is it the moon or television radiation or what? Even Terri's been having a bit of a rough time in jolly ole England. I've had stuff go poorly at work, on freelance writing jobs, on dates, etc. but never all at once. What should I do? Resort to Tarot cards? Drink lots of vodka? French Ken Starr's bed? I'd take a one way trip to the Border but I don't think they let guys my age in. Any suggestions other than not to go on dates with waitresses and that writing for a computer company is equivalent to writing for Satan? Hoping all you folks are having better weeks than I... MK

Sid <who hates colds. grr.> Mon Oct 19 11:43:09 EDT 1998

Sorry about your bad week Michael! Maybe hold out and hope for the best? Don't let them turkeys get you down?*grin* Hope it all turns out well enough, but I can't help you about the waitresses or writing for Satan!(about him, perhaps, but that was fiction...) I will send good thoughts your way, cause other than this cold, I've had a good enough week.

i dunno if i have a mental problem or what but..hehe ever sence i read my two btown books i've wanted to be there as in like living there not just in the imagination or something..i was talking to my mom..cause heh i dunno why..but i was..and she was like i could get to be as close to it as possible by writing but that doesnt help because i cant really write down what i dream/day-dream/or wish..and..its so aggrivating and i feel as if it is out there all someone has to do is find it on their own..but with everything being so complecated theres school and you need money to live and you need this and that and so on..and i wouldn't feel so weird about being this way if there was a whole group of people that had the same view i did..and somehow theres no one..why do the things you want have to be fictional? why why why..and yes i am whining..itd be nice if there were a whole group of people that would ditch the world and like set out with me on tryin to find something that will possibly never be found..but im thinkin that'll never happen either..cause heh..other people..unlike me..acutally have kewl enjoyable lives..but oh well..just thought i could share wiht some people..cause i never tell anyone anything like this lala

Michael, sorry 'bout your bad days. I know the feelin'. As for takin' that trip to the Border, I'm with ya sweet!! Been there!! An' trust me they will let ya in. Can't be much older than meself, dux. The Jingle will be 36 come aroun' next March an' if'n they let me ramble the streets an' party an' dispense wiseish words o' wisdom to the youth... ::Chuckles.:: they'll let anyone come!
All you youth rattin' the streets, be careful o' wiseish words o' wisdom that come from a halfie with fangs a hundreds of bells jingling her coming!!
Lyrin, there are those out there that think an' feel as you! Trust me on this. I've had the bus packed since I read the first book in '86. ::They think she's kidding about this, she's not.:: Until the "Change" does take place, hon, we have to make our own Bordertown, our own little corner where the like minds can cluster. You've found some of us an' our little space within realms electric. Trust me there's more out there you just have to sift through the Plastic to find the Pearls, luv.
An' as for not being able to write down what you think/day-dream/dream, I'm with ya. My mind sometimes runs too fast ::Sometimes?:: for a pen to be of any use. Get a hand-held tape recorder. Keep it with you at all times. When you delve into your mind's world an' begin to construct those dreams grab it an' gab up a storm!!! Don't worry that it doesn't make sense, if you wan' to put it to paper eventually you can always clean it up later.
Sticky!!!! Hey sweet!!! Missed you somethin' awful. ::Big huggles.::

Until the road winds 'round this way again my thoughts an' energies are with you all.
May Faeries sing you to sleep and waken you with feather kisses of sweetened dew.

Blessed be
Jingle

::Huggles and smoochles them all then bounces off elflocks jingling up a storm.::

Cat <cat@cybergeek.net> Tue Oct 20 02:53:34 EDT 1998

Lyrin... Let me assure you that you are far from the only one to feel that way; both about the writing, and about life in general. I've been looking for a better place to live for years, and my conclusion is simply this: I'll have to build it. I don't know how. I don't know where. I have some ideas about what I (we, whoever 'we' turns out to be) will need. I've seen it under different names, too: Midian and Callahan's both come to mind. In the meantime, I wait impatiently, and try to be ready.

And no, often writing *isn't* enough. It helps, but not as much as being around other people who share your views. Not as much as finding out that you *aren't* the only one 'like that.'

Sid: I was thinking of a betting pool on how soon the Board will crash!

Michael>> I've been having one of those months, sort of-- while not everything is going wrong, the things that are have been big enough to make everything else feel like it is! That said, you have my sympathies. Mercury must be retrograde...

Crimson>> Clovers and poetry... I've said this before, but I admire your talents, and your timing.

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Tue Oct 20 13:26:08 EDT 1998

Micheal - my sympathies over the tough times. We all have our rough patches. May I suggest tea, a warm bath, candles and a great book? Those usually cheer me up- or at least help me escape for a bit. I wouldn't reccomend vodka, waitresses or Mr. Star. Those will end up causing more trouble in the end! Try doing something unexpectedly nice for someone - can't hurt to have some good kharma in the pipes! And I've no doubt they'd let you into Bordertown! It's an all-ages club, from what I have gathered. We need some older, wiser folk around to keep the chaotic children from causing utter destruction. ;) Besides, age is a state of mind! Sometimes, when life's a bit less than perfect I imagine that I'm in BTown and it adds a little romance to the situation. It maybe dorky, but turning adversity and struggle into something a little more noble and adventurous can help. And it also helps to be thankful once in awhile that we don't have to deal with elvin gangs or backfiring magic. Sometimes mundanity (is that a word?) can be comforting, too. ;) But if you decide to head out to the Border, give me a shout and I'll be your trevelling buddy! Luv, Elly

Lyrin <lyrin@hotmail.com> Tue Oct 20 17:17:39 EDT 1998

**smiles** thats a good idea jingle next time i get money **grin** i'll try and get a hand recorder....i know from what i've read that b-town isn't the safest most secure place to be but it seems comforting to be there ya know?

you've got another one on that long wander to the Border, friends. There are many of us trying to make it to that place...agree with out Cat that we must make that place but some days the magic seems too far or too wild to possibly be what we were looking for! hmf! possible, there is a large part of the proplem!!! all so programed, by our lives by others by the press of the mold around us! ...often not let out the things that i know are so that i will not be judged and removed, learned that fairly early on...autumn brings these wants for wanders, in the woodsmoke/maplegold/rainwashed air. "places of departure"...just saw What Dreams May Come, after all the rainting about it on the ML. wow, found myself repeating again again again taht i hope someone has gone in after a dear one that is lost to this place before i get to that place, 'cause (though don't want to be the one to do it) i would have too...Elly, there is a place for the tea and for the vodka, different cures for the pain though with different costs...I WANNA MEET TECH!...um, lost it there a bit...wanna have timeandhoursanddays with so many fo you! Luck be turning Micheal, when it will.

When I want to get to the Border so bad, I come here. Because it IS here, you know. Not fulltime, but we get snatches of it. But I'm with Cat, planning toward a house/neighborhood. If I plan, I know it will happen. Some may think I'm crazy for not leaving all this in my imagination, but when I said, "@#* it!" and went looking, I found y'all. So I know I'm not so crazy. We'll take the next step, someday. Blessings, Michael. It will get better. Lyrin, keep dreaming, and get that tape recorder!

I love those stories, the ones that don't matter in the slightest, but still have some good lines. Where you can decide to wake the main character up to end the story and not care. Definitely post it, with your stream of conciousness posts, I'm really curious to see a rambling story of yours.

Love, Sapphi

Paper Angel <>I am a straw... I *AM* a straw<> Thu Oct 22 13:50:42 EDT 1998

Can I break the camel's back, though? As a straw, I am not very heavy, but am I enough? And if I am not the one, who will be the Fabled Last Straw? Will we know? I suppose there will be conjecture for many years and we will all wonder, especially those who think they were the last to see the Fabled B'Board. Ye Olde Scratching Post. Ah, how we will miss thee. My eyes shimmer with yet unshed dew for thee. Yet you will not truly die, for you will be in all our hearts. We will wander the corridors of our hearts, saying; 'Was not this first board, this True thing, was it not a thing transcending time and space? Was it not a place made magic by those who looked 'pon it?' But, no, friends, we should not weep, for it wouldn't want us to do so! It would and will happily pass the torch onto Claris' board [Insert plug, Claris...] and smile in it's own odd-gigged heart. We have all touched and been touched here (some were already 'touched') in some way. I know my life has been forever enriched by every wise word given to me here... Especially the phrase: Angel, you really should consider sleeping and eating like everyone else. And; Angel, are you really only typing with six fingers? Wait, maybe those were outlou

Sid <> Thu Oct 22 20:55:38 EDT 1998

Angel, did you stop in the middle of that on purpose? Or did the board go *gulp*?? But your words are true, my friend. I will miss this place whence it is gone for good.

Michael Korolenko <korry@msn.com> Fri Oct 23 02:44:58 EDT 1998

You folks are all very cool and your messages have somehow made me feel much better. Maybe there's something to all this digital technology after all. Jingle - 36? You're just a lass. Actually, I'm not much older than you, though oftimes of late I feel about 70. But your message blew the years away like magic and now I feel at least 30 years younger than 70. Cat - don't know about Mercury, but my moon must be in retrograde or something. Elly - all excellent suggestions - romantic, relaxing, and I've heard Truebloods often take baths surrounded by candles, though they'll say different if you ask 'em. And you sound like you'd be a lovely travelling companion. (and if "mundanity" isn't a word, it should be). Corva, Grey - much thanks for the kind words and thoughts. Hoping to see "What Dreams May Come" this weekend. Always loved Matheson's work - read the book when it first came out twenty years ago. Met the Executive Producer of the movie version some ten years ago when I worked as a student intern and extra on "Somewhere In Time" (based on Matheson's much more beautiful title from Shakespeare - "Bid Time Return"). Many good fantasy films out of late. Does my heart good. There was a time you couldn't pay people in Hollywood to do fantasy (I know - I tried to get the B'Town books made into a series of films). In any event - thanks once again - if my spirits still aren't flying, they're certainly lifted. Luv to all. MK

NRL <riposte@eathlink.net> Fri Oct 23 03:02:44 EDT 1998

Lyrin, what the others have said I have found to be true; and it's even in the books. The border is where you find it. I lived in a boring little town in a boring little state, but with a friend or two and a little imagination we turned it into what ever we wanted. Fire flies in a summer glade became the lights of a fairy prosession, an alley behind a restaruant became the back streets of Paris, the buildings of the Campus became palaces and enemy forts. There is magic in every mundane thing, and the gift that our imagination and our youth gives us is the ability to look at the street we've seen a thousand times bafore and see something new. And it is when we can no longer do this that we know that we have become old. Don't worry. The border is where you are. G'night all.

grey <djwalker@telepath.com> Fri Oct 23 11:18:54 EDT 1998

Michael>> I *knew* there was a reason I like you! Somewhere in Time is one of my favorite movies. I have spent many a lazy evening with friends, discussing the whereabouts of "the watch." What Dreams May Come, while very different, has a similar flavor. Now I understand the connection--Matheson's imagination. NRL>> Right on! Angel, you are a true poet.

Don't wanna migrate from this board, but I will if I hafta. Hate change!

ethereally, grey

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Fri Oct 23 12:49:35 EDT 1998

Enough of this melencholy rumination! No use mourning what is still alive (so far). And when it does crash - it shall not die, but simply be riencarnated into the new boards - new life, a clean slate! Just like in B-Town. We can start over! Although, Angel, your eulogy was truly beautiful! Remind me to ask you to speak at my funeral when it's my time to pass from this mortal coil! ;) We must all accept and adapt to change. That's what it all about - taking the imperfect world around us and making it our own by altering perspective, improving what we can, evolving to survive. Otherwise we just stagnate and wither. But we must make a pact to stick together through the change - I just finished Elsewhere and it reminds me of what happened at Castle Pup (I won't spoil it for those who haven't read it yet). No running off to join the Bloods or Pack after this place burns to the ground! We have a new haven waiting for us, so all is well! Micheal - glad you're feelin' better! ;) Hope you spirit doesn't bump it's head on the ceiling! NRL- you mean fireflies AREN'T fairie lights? Awww... :( Luv, Elly

corva <> Fri Oct 23 15:40:32 EDT 1998

No Elly, that is not what he ment!!! NRL would never say anything like that! not to us anyhow...gonna go try and hunt down your film suggestion Greylady.

Paper Angel <> Fri Oct 23 21:28:30 EDT 1998

>grin< I find it hard to comprehend you guys took me seriously. I hadn't slept for many long long hours when I wrote that. heh heh. I was laughing hysterically the whole time. Sid, you caught me out, that was on purpose.

All: Age. Who cares? Those who do will be consumed by it; those who don't will grow with it. I'm 24, and realised one strange day that I was not 'young' any more. How silly. How repulsive. At work I have a friend named Boone, who is old enough to about be my grandfather. He is not 'old' he is Boone. I think it is all over when we define ourselves by our age, rather than the vitality of our (I know this sounds corny) souls. As the Dead Can Dance song goes: 'As long as the veins in our arms still stand up, the spirit of life will keep living on.'
Jingle, when I read your words and look at your ideas, I don't think: what an old chick she is. I think of you as no older than me. Same to you Mr. Korolenko (I use Mr. out of respect for your academic position and such, not age).

Elly, you don't want me to speak a eulogy for you. Last time I did was at a birthday party after a couple cups of vodka. What I said can't be repeated since we have an unofficial Pg-13 rating here. Those who were not sickened to the core laughed until the alcohol sickened them. Still am amazed I said it.

Sid, you get the post card? I'm trying something new. Much needed practise.

crimson <jsberet@hotmail.com> Sat Oct 24 02:21:00 EDT 1998

Ah, maybe Annie grows old and long, but maybe, someday, she will be archived...if not, just look from Feb 1 hereon, at the rich tapestry of conversation, bright and dark threads weaving a picture of the borderlands, mayhaps a map that shows the way? And some strands spin away, to dancingferret.com, to the other board, the wherehouse, the Mailing list, the icq chats that happen sporadically as the Mock Avenue theatre.... but, come, the night's still young, mourn not the coming dawn, but drink and dance away!

Sid <> Sat Oct 24 11:06:46 EDT 1998

Angel, not yet, but I'll check the mail when I get home from work!

More later, when I have more time...

grey (and others who may like Matheson's work)>>you might also try Alan Brennert's work; particularly "Time and Chance" and an anthology of short stories under the title "Her Pilgrim Soul" (which was also a wonderful piece on the 1980s "New Twilight Zone" show). big ass mosquitoes, sucking on my blood ok that was an an attempt at a poem, then i settled for a couplet and thought for a bit, before finally settling on this one line. always wondered why one line couldn't be considered a poem. anyways, that sums up my disposition, mosquitoes having a field day, as for myself i've been in the philipinnes for close ta 2 weeks visiting my grammy. found Finder in a bookstore in the philipinnes of all places and now that i've read it cover to cover, why does the Ticker have to kick the bucket?been away from here too long and the thought of this huge ass page loading up what they call ISPs here makes me shiver, had to wait a half hour the other day for it to call up my hotmail account *grin* geez travelling sucks the life out of you. anyways s'good to be here reading bout all yo slices of life. ok just read a kickass book bout a punk vampire slayer called Sonja Blue and ya gotta be impressed when one Nancy A. Collins can breathe fresh life into yet another schpiel on vampires and their existence. Book's called the Midnight Blue Collection. ok nuff ramblings, i've accumulated ten more bites since i've started this blurb so thas it from me fer now. Quasy ps Lo Crimson

Lyrin -I dunno if that Elflands dueling toy has a name - I think it's maybe a Bordertown thing. That means you can name it yourself! Quasy - your mosquito story made me think of that tobasco comercial where the guy's eating pizza wit tobasco sause on it and the mosquito sucks his blood and explodes. :D Maybe you can try that?? And I think a poem can be only one line long! I feel the same about the Ticker. Expressed my extreme dismay to Emma Bull at the rave. It is a testament to her skill to have created a character that illicits such emotion from the readers. She's still alive in my stories. ;) Maybe I'll check out the Midnight Blue collection. Anyone read Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite? Ghost is such a cool character! Well, off to reality. Luv, Elly

hey! everyone is getting dancingferret.com emails! *YAY!* keep 'em coming! just send me the email that you want (i.e. sticks@dancingferret.com etc) and the email you want it attatched to, and away we go! *grin*
also, most of you have a directory on the ferret that you prolly don't even know about. it's for you. if you want to put up a website, page or whatever, get in touch with me and we'll do it! i'd like to keep it related to BTown, but that ISN"T a rule.. just a guideline.*grin* as i said, this is OUR site.. not mine... if there is something you'd like to see on the site, let me know... anyways... motoring...

peace all... miss you...

what directory? er, brighten the dimness here please of great and fun Stickman! can we link up to terri's site? that has many finesnesses on it and good explanings...can't get into the stories yet...are they the old fanfic or something new of you creations? Elly's Dragon needs a home.

sticky <> Wed Oct 28 19:01:20 EST 1998

can and will link to Terri's site... soon...
stories are the existing ones, but they will now all be in one place, which will make life easier when cataloguing them! *grin*
directories are the bit after the name... i.e. there is a place called http://www.dancingferret.com/corva... there's nothing there... yet. I THINK everyone has one... you WILL get a doesn't exist message when you check *grin*... leave messages on any of the ferret boards if ya wanna put something up...

Michael>> Thanks much for reading suggestions; will check out bookstore tomorrow. It's amazing how much syampathy helps, even typewritten online sympathy... And it's even more amazing how often I forget that the thoughts and sentiments expressed here are typewritten and online!

Trinlay>> Got the 'Zine, and am perusing it as we speak. I like what I've read so far in there, am now wondering what I can come up with to contribute to the next one so I can get another issue! {grins}

Stickman>> How much space do we get, exactly? I have a project I've been working on for several years now, off and on, and while I have good reasons not to put it online, I must confess that I'd love to have this B-town community's input on it...

Sapphire <distracted from the board? me?> Thu Oct 29 03:15:08 EST 1998

Heyla, been playing lurker lately. Live is wonderful/awful. Have boyfriend now, who happens to be Crim's boyfriend's bestfriend. Parents have already said "yes" to him coming home with me over winter break. So happiness. Only problem is he's only around on weekends since he's in Indiana. *whimpersigh*

Like all the book/site suggestions. Sticky, great ferret pic, by the way. Owned four of them, mama and three babies, now down to one cause of theft and deaths =(.

Wondering whether she could subscribe to the ML using ferretmail?

Crimson is a sickie, so she won't be in for a good while. Her mom called and told me to play Mommy Hen since she couldn't be here.

Other than that I'm trying to figure out how to get my mother to allow the internet into our house.

Good luck to all,

Sapphire

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Thu Oct 29 11:49:27 EST 1998

Poor Crimson! Send our love and healing vibes! Saphire - congrats and good luck with the new beau! (sp?) Sticks - yes, the ferret is great, got an LOL out of me! Question - how do we retreive our ferret mail? I'm wondering if its more bother than not to have a seperate address. I'm such a lazy bum! One mailbox is enough! I think... But I do have an ICQ # now: 22062732, so put me on your lists, folks! Cat - what several-year project??? I wanna input!! ;) Have fun, kids! Luv, Elly

sticky <> Thu Oct 29 12:41:30 EST 1998

thanks for the interest y'all.. warms my heart to see you all so excited about this...
the email is pointing to your regular email, so when you get mail sent to whoever@dancingferret.com, it goes to your regular email... no changes necessary..
re: directories. anything you want to put on, you put on... i fell comfortable saying that, 'cuz no one here is inconsiderate... i do ask that pix be relatively small (under 50k for pix that WON'T be on a page (i.e. "hey, wanna see a good pic of me?" and under 15K for pix that will be on a page.) i can help with this, getting the pix smaller, filesizewise, i just made up that word.. *grin*, so it's not REALLY a problem. also, it doesn't have to be linked anywhere... cat, if you're hesitant to put something up, don't worry.. the only people that will see it are those you show it to... corva, anything your heart desires! *grin*

i am not currently on the mailing list as the bank f**ked up out credit card and we owe our ISP about$800... no email=no ML. soon be fixed tho...

the boards.. NRL had an idea... we use the bbs board, (part 2, i think) for a storyline, and the regular one for this kinda stuff... lemme know what you think...

peace all...

Sapphire <> Thu Oct 29 14:21:46 EST 1998

Elly>> YOU GOT THE ICQ TO WORK!!!!! happyhappy

Sticky/NRL>>Yes a storyboard (ouch, just got a flashback from doing movie workshops) would be a good idea.

Doing html projects in my ECE100 class, supposed to make a webpage, I hate the usual "here's my page, this is my life" stuff, so I threw together a list of three songs relevant to physics teachers and gave reasons for including them. Stupid, but then so's the entire class.

Does the board automatically asterisk or did you watch your own mouth, Sticky?

'kay, "blinded me with science", "particle man" and what other ones Sapphire?

Sapphire <> Mon Nov 2 00:09:29 EST 1998

Actually, "Falling Down on New Jersey" by (I think) Frank Hayes, "The Worst Job There Is" by Tom Smith, and "Phoster's Phantastic Physics" by myself--I'm into filk, remember? Those songs are too mainstream (also, I didn't think of "Particle Man") I actually made a tape of a lot more songs for Mr. Foster, but most of those were specific to his life in general.

Sapphire <> Mon Nov 2 09:46:52 EST 1998

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Mon Nov 2 14:13:28 EST 1998

Partical Man is They Might Be Giants. Very silly, fun band. Got to see them live at GenCon - they were great! I like Universe Man - size of the entire universe man. Ususally kind to smaller men. Heh heh. And Person Man, hit on the head with a frying pan, lives his life in a garbage can. There's a track on a collection I have that has a 3rd grade class singing that song. It's great! She Blinded me with Science is great, too. Storyboard sounds good. And if Ferret mail comes to our regular mailbox, shoot, sign me up! :) Sounds easy enough! Even I can handle that. Trent <knappenp@interaccess.com> Tue Nov 3 12:40:34 EST 1998

Greetings. I'm a fan of the Borderlands series; I got hooked on War for the Oaks by Emma Bull, read all of her books, and then got into the Borderlands series. I'm also a big fan of Will Shetterly's books, and Midori Snyder, and Steven Brust, Terri Windling (both as an editor and as an author), Kara Dalkey, and a horde of other Minnesota authors and related Scribblies. I branched into the music often referred to in these books (Cat's Laughing, Boiled in Lead, Steven Brust, Raven's Tir/Morrigan, Moggenahf, and others...), and got more hooked. I'm also on the Signal-to-Noise mailing list (which discusses the Flash Girls and related subjects - Borderlands books come up every once in awhile, since Emma Bull is both an author in the series and half of the band), and have met a few of the authors I so admire. I wrote a Borderlands zone for an AberMUD which links to a Ren Faire zone on ArgentMUD, and would like to compare it with the MUSH zone that someone created (I saw it referred to on a website, but don't remember where). Otherwise, I'll just lurk around here and read the board when I get a chance. -Trent

So, since they would *never* even *think* of breaking the rules, there are a lot of fish with fur and claws and long thin tails...

But it's all good- everyone here is wonderful - creative, caring, supportive, sometimes neurotic and always entertaining. We're glad to have you aboard! Feel free to comment, querrie or vent as you see fit! Grey - Scanners are good and all, but they just aren't as cute! I think you made the right choice! Corva, if Constantinople throws a bash, I'll get an invitation, right? Sapphire - I have a couple of those fish who stalk the crows in my yard. Interesting species, as they seem to hate being wet. loaned out my copy of Bordertown to a friend, will get the results back on friday... and my precious book... I want the money to go buy emma bull's bone dance so I can memorize it... I straightened out the dog-ears in Falcon so it'll last longer. *sigh*

Heya folks! Just stopped in to find out the name of that wonderful book I read last year (Eslewhere) and Shazam! I find a whole series......this is way too spiff......so I thought I'd say hi, and perhaps I'll stop in from time to time! Bye! (Sorry, bit hyper......6 am and I'm wired on Kool-Aid and Nicotine.......appy-polly-loggies to all!) -Pooka Pooka

Trent <knappenp@interaccess.com> Thu Nov 5 09:54:53 EST 1998

Greetings, and thanks for the welcome. Rest assured, I'll speak up every once in awhile. Just, at the moment, I don't have much to say. :) -Trent

HEya, Pooka!
wired is fun... coherent is fun. Incoherent is fun to play with.

so is snow. 12:45 at night, my roomie yells, "IT'S SNOWING!" at the top of her lungs as she races down the hall. So many international students here, and hawaiians, texans, warm-climate folks ...they were out in the snowfall playing, trying to catch flakes, marvelling at this stuff they've never seen before... bringing in snowballs to fight in the lounge... the upperclassmen grumble; I just smile and cut them all the slack I can. It's so fun to watch two hundred folks see their first snowfall, and play like we used to before we deluded ourselves into thinking we're too old... I want more snow so I can go out and make snow angels.

That's fantabulos! Man.......I wish it would snow here already......we have this wicked (I can't believe I used that word.....) sledding hill over here. Steep, but not too steep. Short, but not too short. I can't wait. I'll miss the colors of Summer, but I never feel quite as peaceful and happy as when I wake up early in the morning, before the sun comes up, on the night of the first big snow.......it's quiet, and beautiful......moon reflecting on the snow, breath making a fog.......Ugh, I'm getting far too mushy over weather. Ah well. Expect it from me, I suppose. Have a wonderfl (insert anything here) -Pooka Pooka

Corva <> Sat Nov 7 19:06:43 EST 1998

Just was hanging out with Elly and her man, and Rayvn, and the Lurk watching the planes go up, doing a stuff your face gleefully brunch, and laughing about the deaf ducks. Then got to see the Arg and to hear his tunes! He was not floating in a lotus position in his sanctum, all incircled by keyboards when we were there but this one rather imagines that he often does such!...Bear sleeps and LaLaLand chokes...no NRL, sadly.

nrl, happy belated b-day!
bad, bad news... the administration put down broadleef killer, and my clover patches are gone... if you don't have clover from me by now, needs must wait while I find first free time, then more clover off-campus...

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Tue Nov 10 11:29:26 EST 1998

:O Aaahhh! We mourn the clover patch!! Oh, woe to us! A curse upon the dreaded exfoliant! Foul murderer of fortune! Slayer of good luck! (tearing hair and throwing ashes) May the blessed quadrapetals find thier place in heaven among the angels! And pray that thier benign influence does not forsake us!! Wahhhhhh! Sob! Sniff! Wail!

Sid <> Tue Nov 10 15:06:32 EST 1998

Crimson, then I will hold what clovers I have from you even more dearly to my heart!

Welcome, all you brave new people! Glad you decided to stick around for the Loading of the Board!>g<

Sticks!! You out there? Did the hurricane get you? Sent you an email, but got no reply... figured maybe the server was down?

Angelica <> Tue Nov 10 17:05:08 EST 1998

I haven't read any of the official books, but a friend of mine has written a couple of short stories based on them and they got me interested. I've also checked out some of the Bordrlands sites that interested me. I would like to read some of the stories so if any one would tell me where I could buy or borrow a copy...?

corva <> Tue Nov 10 20:42:13 EST 1998

read none of them?!?...welcome though, welcome! at least a few are in print, try your local independant bookstore. Um, for the out of print ones, eyes will be kept out for you! Bordertown is in print as Essential Bordertown. As for the CLOVERS, Elly said it all but a moment of silence, for their silenced russelings...my thanks for the dear folks that have given such green gifties to this one who has never had the luck to find one herself. Luck to have such friends! Have the new folks seen our fanfic?...there was a note from Sticks on his board saying that there is much blowing but that they are safe and well. --Good Travels to All--

crimson <crimson@dancingferret.com> Tue Nov 10 21:30:25 EST 1998

thank ye muchly for your concern for m'clovers...
tonight no snow again, but wind, oh, wind!
the air is alive, and dancing, and it pushes and shoves like a mosher, moaning and wailing around the buildings, flinging leaves and papers and clothes until I feel like a picture-book wizard, hair and coat and scarf streaming back behind me as the wind tears my clothes back. In a playfull afterthought, a whirlwind is flung into the doors I open, sending a shower of leaves in brown and gold into the warm, quiet building's blue carpet. I walk to the inner door, feet crunching on leaves and seeing the piles in the corners almost big enough to fall in like children do, where they rest exhausted from the wind's tango.
>>angelica, welcome!!
