Hello, Debbie-lirium! Glad to see you made it! Next time I head through Dallas I'll try to bring you my one and only much-beloved copy of Life On the Border... [For which I owe much thanks to Annachie!]

Welcome back, Grey!

Sid <> Fri Jul 24 09:03:26 EDT 1998

Yes, Welcome back Grey! Good to see you again!

Looks like I have another extra copy of the new book--anyone still need it? I got it from Amazon, and accidently ordered two instead of one! (must have been asleep)

dELiRiUmOusNeSs <dazed and confused mousie> Fri Jul 24 09:35:41 EDT 1998

I was brought in by the cat...we have horribly similar taste in FINE literature. I will try to find some books around here, but so far no luck. Cat, thank you for the offer of your firstborn. You know i've taken care of your other children in the past, i will do likewise with your one and only Life on the Border. Corva, what is Emerald City? That author also writes about ancient calligraphies, but i've never seen one of those books. I like this place. --THE END

Crimson <JSberet@hotmail.com> Fri Jul 24 11:57:15 EDT 1998

Okay, I have found a chat board for one of the best fantasy books I know...and now I have to start reading fom december to get to July? How do I avoid catching up on months of gossip to talk to people?

Crimson <JSberet@hotmail.com> Fri Jul 24 12:00:13 EDT 1998

And how do I find Fanfiction? As a hobby, I collect and pess four-leaf clovers, but they aren't doing me much good on the internet...anybody have a cyber-four-leaf clover equivalent?

corva <> Fri Jul 24 12:09:30 EDT 1998

oh, ough, the board is just like that for now i fear. the owner of the board went and got himself taken by aliens i think, or the gremlins have him at last and will not release him...so, longlong board...Emerald City is seattle town where i am heading, blurry eyed, away from my alaska moutains. HI GREY HI GREYHIGREY-it is sure great to have you back with us, ya want an update? drop me an email? The fanfiction is here and there...um, be right back with those heres and theres Crimson...

corva <crownest@pobox.alaska.net> Fri Jul 24 12:15:45 EDT 1998

go to this here and the links will lead you where you are trying to go! http://www.endicott-studio.com/brdrlnd1.html

Sid <ah well here we go again> Fri Jul 24 13:54:29 EDT 1998

Welcome new people to the very long board!! I'm going to see Zorro (again)! Yippee! Saw some cool dragon shoes today, but alas they weren't in my size, boy was I mad. I want a pair of dragon shoes!! Might just have to do the embroidery myself, I guess. Sigh. :-P

Crimson <JSBeret@hotmail.com> Fri Jul 24 16:22:12 EDT 1998

That is, I press four leaf clovers, not pester them. On that subject, my friends, I have conflicting stories as to whether fives are good or bad...and nobody has any knid of clue what luck six-leaf clovers are? I have two, and HAVE NO CLUE...

corva <> Fri Jul 24 16:51:10 EDT 1998

it seems that you must attract them! or they you? i have a small friend (five years old) and all golden, that has the same gift as you but even she has not been so lucky as to fine a sixleafer! Has everyone read Gaiman & Vess' "Stardust"? It is a must for the lot of us-another BorderTown of sorts and a worthy read indeed!!! Sid-i am almsot certain that such shoes could be found in seattle town; sounds like you'll have to make rainy-con or your feet won't forgive you...

Sid <who now wants to be a swordsperson when she grows up... Zorro rules!!> Fri Jul 24 21:41:25 EDT 1998

the closest I've come is a four leaf one, and I pressed it and carried it around with me for years... Corva, I wish I could come! But wedding plans next year are nixing any sort of travel... I'm planning to decorate a pair of jeans tonight...>g< and wear them to work on the morrow. hehe. 'twill shock those librarian people. I will have to do my own dragons, it seems. And I have a hard time drawing them, so I found a nice clip art picture that will work wonders. :-)

Cat <cat@cybergeek.net> Sat Jul 25 00:23:42 EDT 1998

And what's wrong with pestering four-leafed clovers, I'd like to know? On a more serious note, I'll try to email you some addys for bordertown related materials, Crimson.

Sid>> Depending on where you are, you might want to look up your local SCA chapter and ask about light-fighting... it's about as close a you can get to rapier combat. Techwolf is probably the best one to ask about making that sort of combat.
Story's still coming along... It's a lot *longer* than I thought it would be. Still planning to send it around when I'm happy with it.

Best to you all,
--Cat

corva <crownest@pobox.alaska.net> Sat Jul 25 02:50:38 EDT 1998

Sid...did i not get the local SCA info to you like i said i would? oogh, i'm usually better at things like that...if i do a minor/major space, please remind and tell me so that i can make it right! I'll send off some good SCA addresses this evening or tomorrow that will get you where you ar going to. Cat, can we have a taste? just a little one? please?

Hi, Angel, Corva, Cat, Sid. I told the sidekick about Sticks' and Christine's tattooed wedding rings. He just had his first tattoo done, a celtic knotwork band around his upper arm. He looked at his finger thoughtfully and said, "That would be painful." We both think *your* tattoo is really cool, Corva (I showed him the Rave pic you sent).

sid, any takers on book offer? i would like to borrow as it will be quite a while before i can afford to buy. workable?

started story this weekend.....not btown.....i usually stick to poetry, as i hate dialogue (for a few stupid reasons) and i take forever in naming characters (names are so very important)......but this one has been tugging my soul for many years now.....written a few poems to try to appease, but it won't let go.....lost in that now.....

anyhow, work project like a big dragon i battle.....so i must take sword in hand and talk with you later.......

hi guys! Oy so much to do! Sorrysorrysorry I haven't gone to get reprints of the rave pics - probably won't happen till mid Aug since I'll soon by Con-hopping and out of town for a couple weeks. :( Claris - any progress on getting the pics I sent you posted so folks can see?? Welcome home Mr and Mrs Sticks! And as far as 6-leaf clovers go, in my expert mongel Irish opinion, I'd say that's two leaves o' extra luck you have there, Crimson! ;) Faith n begorah! Just got a fan review of the new Legend of the Five Rings card set I did a bunch of art for and according to the guy, my Hitmoi piece ranked 2nd place in cool art for the whole set! Wheee! They like me - they really like me! I may even have folks bringing me cards to sign at GenCon! Watch out folks, I'm a Force in the gaming industry! :) If ya'll wanna see one of my most recent graphic design pieces, check out www.7thSea.com. It's still a top secret project and I can't say anymore about what it is, but it's gonna be cool. ;) Oh, and Zorro was so much fun! Antonio Banderas is SO mas sexual! I was tripping out during the training scenes cuz a lot of the sword stuff they were doing was what we do in kenjutsu, and Anthony Hopkins was acting JUST like our sensei! But we don't get to wear cool black masks and capes. Just white gi's, color belts and hakamas. Sadly, we test next month again and my pretty blue belt will (if I pass, anyways!) be retired for green. Ah well. I guess green is good, too. But when I get to brown, ugh! So passe! Okay, enough babbling! Luv, Elly

grey <djwalker@telepath.com> Tue Jul 28 11:56:13 EDT 1998

Elly, congrats on the art recognition. Even though art/writing comes from inside, it sure feels good when someone else likes it. I remember Annie Dillard saying something like, "In my experience, the general public does not love writers. Nor does it hate them. Mostly, it is completely indifferent to them."

On that cheery note, Grey

i must get in touch with you re: my portfolio... now that i'm out a job, i need as much freelance as i can get! *LOL* i know it prolly won't be much, but every little bit helps....

hey! i'm thinking about starting a font foundry... anyone interested in designing fonts? it's just an idea now, but (hopefully) will become a reality soon.

dancing ferret will be a reality soon too.. as soon as my check clears, i'm going to internic to register the name.. the company that i got it from hasn't done it yet, so i told them i'd do it and to put the money already paid on rental of the space... once that's done, emails will be assigned, and the page will finally be designed! *LOL*

peace all...

So when folks respond, that's exactly what I'm going for. Lets me know I'm doin my job! Oh, and I found out that instead of coming in second in best art for the set (which I how I misread it), the other guys came in second to my piece, according to that one player. :D As far as writers, I don't know about that quote. Writers touch and effect a lot of folks in a lot of ways. I wouldn't say they were ignored. I mean, it was authors who brought all of us together, right? :) Sticks - I'd love to see your portfolio! Well, off to eat something afore I pass out! Luv, Elly

grey <djwalker@telepath.com> Wed Jul 29 11:15:15 EDT 1998

Elly>> I definitely agree with you that *we* love writers, couldn't live without 'em. But I do also have to agree with Annie that the "general public" seems to be indifferent. At least based on the large numbers of people who, when I tell them I'm a librarian, tell me that they don't have time to read. I never think about "making time" to read. Reading is. Usually, I have to "make time" to get dressed, cook, and basically keep the home fires burning--if I don't deliberately do it, it gets neglected. But reading and breathing go together. Of course, I don't admit this to "normal" people. *g*

Sticks>> Can't wait for the 'Ferret to come to life! Woo Hoo!

Went visiting some "normal" people last night. Found myself trying to explain to them why I spend so much time Btowning. They didn't get it. I ended up hashing together anthropological and sociological jargon in an effort to validate myself, then just gave up. I'm now thinking up some snappy one-liner that I can use if the subject ever comes up in "polite conversation" again. Any ideas, anybody?

Ethereally, Grey

Reading is life. Reality is just for spawning new stories...no, reality is just one big story to read.

corva <> Wed Jul 29 16:38:03 EDT 1998

all Stories have/are truth

Sid <> Wed Jul 29 18:08:39 EDT 1998

I feel the same about writing. Making time for it is alien for me; it is, it will always be part of me. I keep telling people that writing is akin to breathing. >g< I'm not sure they understand.
Reading is the same way, but I see writing as reading without really knowing how it is going to end, I write to see what will happen to the characters(who are sometimes more alive to me than they should be...)ah bien. Does that make sense or am I just babbling?

trinlay <trin@dias.net> Wed Jul 29 23:05:46 EDT 1998

Congrats all around! Yes I am still alive, Cat also sent a nifty story for my zine. So now I've got (it looks like) 3 stories, (well one is really a prose poem I think) some haiku, some "odd emails" and some interesting quotes. It's off to a good start. I'm going to have a zine review and have started collecting sci-fi and fantasy themed zines... probably presented in Siskel and Ebert style by me and Rayz'r. Well, keep in touch, I gotta run! but how do I get one of them cards?

Paper Angel <> Wed Jul 29 23:42:00 EDT 1998

I usually resort to reffering to my writing habit as 'mental masturbation'. Sometimes they get it, sometimes not.

Sid <> Thu Jul 30 00:11:46 EDT 1998

Oh, Angel, I like that!!

Cat <> Thu Jul 30 01:04:10 EDT 1998

For me, writing and dreaming are intimately connected. There both places where I go to play with perspectives, sort out truths, and sometimes (if I'm lucky) receive revelations. So, *not* masturbation... well, not usually. But yes, I like writing stories when I'm not sure how they're going to end...

Finally replaced the mouse on my computer (it was getting worn out from all the use!). Bought a touchpad instead, takes a little getting used to, but I like it.

Carol back on the 9th. Not soon enough!

and that, briefly, is the news from Lawton.

Cool! Elly and Claris, thank you so much! Finally got to see the rave photos. Elly you did a great job. Boy did we look great or what? Corva, looking forward to yours. And yes, Elly in the last picture it does look like you're holding me up by the neck and my feet aren't touching the ground. Gack! Uh, let's see, what else. Sticks, interested in fonts. I've hand done fonts for band logos and such all my life. Never tried to do a whole alphabet before and don't really know what's intailed. Tell me more. Elly, congradulations on your art. Where can we see it. Did you do the &th Sea logo at that web site?.... Writing is so much like a drug for me it's not even funny. I leave bills unpaid, friends uncalled, letters unwirtten, chores undone. Things get left where ever I toss them on the way to the computer. I hide from my friends.. I hide from the world, and then come out pale and shaking when I'm done and don't know what to do with myself between jobs so I start writing again almost immediately. Good for the resume, bad for the social life. Thank the gods I have such an understanding support group. Angel, aren't you glad nobody got a picture of our mosgt spectacular dance floor move? G'night all!

corva <> Thu Jul 30 13:25:01 EDT 1998

Yes, I did the 7th Sea logo - having a lot of fun with the project - wait'll you guys see some of the other art we've got for it - awesome stuff!! As soon as we get a red light to give out info, I'll let you guys know all about it. If I talk before then they'll have to kill me. As far as seeing more of my art, I'm working on getting more up on the web. About writing being a drug - there are far worse addictions! I know what you mean, though. I often loose precious sleep cuz my brain won't shut off the idea generator. But at least it's a creative outlet that benefits people, and can possibly be a career (maybe you can get ahold of some of Crimon's clovers and stick them in the envelopes when you send out scripts? Might help a bit. ;) Corva, hmmm, you don't wanna be on the Postal Gods' bad side! But fear not, I have a cousin who works for them - I'll put in a good word for ya. P.S. Hello everyone... new and old. Sorry I haven't been keeping touch, but believe me when I say that I miss you all. Life has been spinning much too fast. I got a new toy recently (a G3 Powerbook) and I've been spending the last few days trying to get linuxppc to run on it (unsuccessfully, but I'm still trying. Apparently, I might have too much memory on my system. Silly if you think about it). The Ren Faire has started up again, and it will be going on for the next six weeks, so my schedule is some what booked (which means I won't be able to go to Comicon, sorry NRL and Elly).

Cat <Cat@cybergeek.net> Mon Aug 3 01:35:42 EDT 1998

Somebody make the font change BAAAACK! Bad Lyrin, no html!

Congratulations, Ember Fireborn! Hope it works out as well for you as mine is for me!

Back soon, best to everyone,

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Mon Aug 3 03:34:21 EDT 1998

Actually had the Essential Bordertown in my hands today, but alas alack, I lack the cash. Have to wait for the paperback. But I must read it before then. Hmmmm. Ember, you must have passed you writing block on to me. I'M STUCK! I'll fix it tomorrow. Trying to force something that won't be forced. Just have to figure another way to accomplish the same things. What that is, I don't know. Seeing the pictures made me miss you guys. I almost wish I hadn't met you cause then I wouldn't miss you. Almost, but not really. G'night all.

sticky <> Mon Aug 3 09:49:49 EDT 1998

Trying to fix...
Angel, I bid $40, if you could get that to whoever needs the info...
Saint raven> love spider... used to hang out in a place based on callahan's while in ottawa.. went out of business, but went out with a bang (not as big a bang as callahan's, but... *grin*)spider has turned me on to many things i probably wouldn't even know about otherwise, and for that i am eternally grateful.

peace all.. love ya... (BTW, I'd like to say that, in my opinion, we ARE the best LOOKING bunch of "cyber-friends" (god i hate that phrase) out there! *LOL*)

corva <> Mon Aug 3 13:54:53 EDT 1998

...NRL, this one is knowing and feeling just what you said...

grey <list'ning house> Mon Aug 3 15:47:31 EDT 1998

Just wanted to add my own belated appreciation for the pix, Claris and Elly. So good to see everyone!

Am contemplating how to close a relationship with an old friend who has not been a friend for a long time. Infinite sadness.

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Tue Aug 4 03:36:50 EDT 1998

Hi guys, Thanx for the thanx! ;) Claris did all the work on the site, all I did was snap pics and scan em in. Nathan, come look for me at the AEG booth at ComiCon! Maybe we can grab lunch or something? Annachie...you won't be going? :( Alas. Hope things stop spinning so fast for ya. I know how that is - not a moment to catch your breath. Welcome, Saint Raven! This board tends to be a mix of B-town discussion and personal babblings, but that's okay, cuz that's how we get to know each other and I think we're all here one way or another becuase Bordertown is a part of our lives. Still haven't gotten my mitts on a copy of the new book. Grrr. Stupid Barnes and Noble didn't have it today - was hoping to be able to read it on the plane. But hopefully I'll be able to pick it up in MIlwaukee when I get there. There's the collest little used bookshop downtown run by this great old Jewish/Russian guy. He was so nice to us last year. I'd like to give him some more business. If he sells new books, that is. If not, maybe I can score some oldies. So I'm off to GenCon tomorrow - I'm almost all packed (gotta get my kimono ready for the live L5R rpg- heh heh heh). Ember, your "you wear my love like a see-through dress" quote reminds me of a Susan Vega lyric - can't think of the whole line right now but it starts out something like: "If we had met on some midnight train...blah blah blah.. "would I have dressed in smoke and fire, for you to see through." Well, I kinda screwed it up, but it's a cool song about ' what could have happened if we'd met somehwere exotic and free instead of our real lives in the boring city' type of thing. But anyways. Argh. It's late. Gotta be up early tomorow and hop that silver bird to the land of cheese and beer. Last year, the most cheese I saw was made of foam and made to go on someone's head and the beer ...bleh! What's with that Pabst crapola, anyways?? Gimme a damn Killan's already! Sigh. Well, at least there's jello shooters to drown my grief over gross Wisconsin beer. ;) Can you drown in jello? Hmmm.... I'll check in when I get back next Monday! Have fun ya'll! Luv, Elly

Crimson <JSBeret@hotmail.com> Tue Aug 4 12:37:43 EDT 1998

I'd bid on the book but I'm a broke college kid getting broker... (heh. Bad grammer. Bad day.) If anybody wants a four-leaf clover, sent your adress to my e-mail account and I'll try to mail it to you. Should I go entrepenurial and demand instead a SASE with a dollar inside? Going fast, I only have a hundred and some, and am moving in two weeks far, far away from my favorite clover patches... Can anybody believe that IIT wants me to be in my Chicago dorm on th 16 of August? I'M GONNA MISS RENNIE FAIR!!!!!!! AAAGH!!!!! At least my misery has company; unlike moi of Southern Ohio, my roomie is from Hawaii. We'll freeze together.... Congrats to them-as-got-the-job! Is The essential Bordertown out yet? If I can babysit or beg, I might have money enough to buy it when I get to Chicago; bookstores here have no clue how to stock a fantasy section. "Oh, like Conan and Superman?" Aaargh. Anybody have a clue where I could find a Rennie Faire in Chicago? Or a Con of any sorts? Net adresses are welcome. Whew, this is long!

corva <crownest@pobox.alaska.net> Tue Aug 4 16:46:24 EDT 1998

in or near chicago and needed an SF/Fantasy shop? try "The Stars Our Destination Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Bookstore" 1021 W. Belmont, Chicago, IL 60657-3302 Voice (773) 871-2722 Fax (773) 871-6816....independant bookseller need to help each other out as best we can against the Killer B's!!!! try asking TechWolf about a ren faire in your area;he is SCA folk and may well be able to help there. Have fun Elly! and good travels...

Sid <> Tue Aug 4 22:12:39 EDT 1998

Longer and longer and longer... Crimson, try looking at this to see if there is a RenFaire near you... and where in Southern Ohio? I'm in Southern Ohio! Let's see if my link worked before I go any farther...

Sid <> Tue Aug 4 22:17:08 EDT 1998

Okay, I'm braindead tonight... let's try this one: Renaissance-Faire.com

Sid <> Tue Aug 4 22:33:15 EDT 1998

Okay. Sheesh. Elly, have fun, and tell us all about it when you get back. I think I'm going to quit now before I do something stupid...
No news from the agent, if anyone wondered. :-( I'm still waiting at the mailbox and inbox impatiently. Whoever said send something out then forget about it didn't know what he/she was talking about. *grin* haha.

Cat <Cat@cybergeek.net> Wed Aug 5 04:52:45 EDT 1998

A word about Saint Raven (aka Saint John the Blasphemer): this is the man who first forced me to read Bordertown stories, essentially at gunpoint. As you can see, I have never forgiven him, or any of the authors whose work I read. Callahan's was my revenge on him. Unfortunately, as he mentioned, his computer lacks the capacity to stomach this entire board, so he took the opportunity to look it over while he was up here visiting. I'll pass on any comments or replies that ought to reach him, however, and he assures me that as soon as his email works, he'll be in contact with the list.

Lyrin, are we to assume that you safely survived your bold adventure into the Underdark beneath your bed?

--Cat

Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Wed Aug 5 10:10:54 EDT 1998

Well, I'm off. ^_^ Hang in there, don't crash the board, kiddies. Ta-ra, Fluffy!

Sid <at work, bored as usual. > Wed Aug 5 11:17:56 EDT 1998

Ah, Lyrin, there are a lot of hidden stories in the walkabout. One from every person here, I think...I just realized I lost the url when I lost my bookmarks; thanks, corva, for posting it! And thanks for the address for SCA. Claris, have a nice time, hope you get to read the new book while you're there!

May all who are travelling have a safe and wonderful trip!

Lyrin <> Wed Aug 5 12:45:42 EDT 1998

(i like this color hehe)Yup, Cat, I survived..hehe..and know what?...i think mom was lying about the boodie man living under there..hehe ..

okay Sid..hehe...i guess im bored enuff to search really hard for em **smile**

grey <djwalker@telepath.com> Wed Aug 5 12:49:39 EDT 1998

Actually, Sid, my story hasn't made it into Stick's pages yet. What with all his getting married and everything *g*. Or else maybe he just didn't like it... But Lyrin, if you wanna read it, I'll be glad to e-mail it to you. It's short.

Good travels to all our travellers, and Techie, I'm still keeping my fingers crossed (even though it's a little difficult to type this way *g*) about that job.

--Grey

Lyrin <lyrin@hotmail.com> Wed Aug 5 13:12:14 EDT 1998

Send away Grey! **smiles**..In the mean tim i think i'll write my own story **grin**

Lyrin <> Wed Aug 5 13:43:55 EDT 1998

Sid <jst_clair@sprynet.com> Wed Aug 5 15:12:16 EDT 1998

Grey, I didn't know that! Have I read yours? If not, please send me it! :-) Maybe this'll give him the hint to post it since he's old and married now.*g* Lyrin, you missed mine, that much I know. Mine is hidden. Have fun searching. *grin*

Okay, whoever still needs a copy of the book, I have one left if anyone is interested. I'm sending one to Ember (as soon as I get to the post office, but if anyone else needs one...let me know!)

Lyrin <> Wed Aug 5 15:22:00 EDT 1998

lyrin <> Wed Aug 5 17:00:15 EDT 1998

no....wheres that at?? **grin**

Sid <> Wed Aug 5 18:02:21 EDT 1998

lyrin <> Wed Aug 5 18:14:15 EDT 1998

um well....hehe...i can't get anywhere is seems but the wherehouse thing and the door next to it....hehe

Sid <> Wed Aug 5 18:15:29 EDT 1998

Beside the Magic Lantern, and that's your last clue!*grin* (Have to make you work for these things, you know.
Book is the newest Borderland book.

Looks like I'm going to be moving to Columbus next year, to be with my fiance who will then be my hubby, so I might have to get rid of one of my harps...*sob* no room, no room. 'less, of course, I leave everything here. Parents would just love that. ha. I'm kind of looking forward to it, since that means I'll get to quit my job, but that also means I'll need a new one. bad and good there. But I don't really have to think about it until next year, so I won't. (but I think I'll be selling a lot of stuff over eBay.)

Lyrin <> Wed Aug 5 18:18:37 EDT 1998

well good luck with it all hehe.. =)

Sid <swamped> Wed Aug 5 18:28:54 EDT 1998

So, is Lyrin missing anyone else's stories? I disremember how many were actually there.

ember <about to go home> Wed Aug 5 19:02:38 EDT 1998

HEY!!! no one has replied on my whining to see the angel and annachie pic. don't make me grouch!!!

lyrin: well, it's not that i want a job, but i do want to pay for a place to sleep and food to eat......as for school, i'd kill to go back.....maybe even to have some of my highschool years back (boy, that is a huge sign that my nostalgia engine is in overdrive!).....you come work and i'll school, 'kay?

*i* don't have anything on stick's page. 'cept the picture he did of me. no poems or stories though. so not everyone has one....*sniffle* i am an outcast! *wail*
*snicker*

okay, gonna take my aching self home (funky stress issues in my shoulder.....feh....) oh, and the line i quoted about wearing my love like a see through dress? it's a misquote of u2. in you're so cruel he says "she wears my love like a see-through dress"

night all!

Lyrin <> Wed Aug 5 19:07:03 EDT 1998

eh...nah i sorta like school...definately not exactly the learning part hehe...

i don't have nothing anywhere..hehe..i like to write but,,,like theres something wrong with me i have some block er something....

Ly <> Wed Aug 5 22:22:25 EDT 1998

**sings**whoa ohh ooh ooh ooh yeah...voulez-vouz .......i knew before bout five years ago then you seemed to the person that didn't act like the people i know yet theres something special about ya a bit insecure but still kinda cute..now i see ya again now you looking so good...voulez-vous dansez avec moi voulez-vouz danser avec moi ce soir..........

oops sorry hehe....'s up people? im just uh..hehe singing but n e ways...have a happy night!! **smiles**

Sid, who should be in bed <musings...> Wed Aug 5 22:45:12 EDT 1998

Ember, but that's a great picture! And Angel and Annachie pic, was it on Claris' page? I remember looking at them all, but I don't remember if there was one with just A&A. And yeah, jobs are nice for the money to pay for my vices(books, clothes, tea, musical instruments, books... you get the idea...) but I'd much rather be home writing all day. One of these days, one of these days...But of course you all realize you'll have to buy my book when it's finally published... *g* Although, by that time, hardbacks will probably cost 50 bucks. I noticed they went up again. grr. I wonder if I'd get a discount being the author and all? Ah, don't pay attention to my wanderings... this board gets longer, and I look at it more every day. makes no sense, and I'd better get back to my chapter before I really can't spell.

Lyrin, what kind of stories do you write? And being blocked is no fun, but if you want to get over it bad enough, you will.

lyrin <> Thu Aug 6 01:15:41 EDT 1998

well...different kinds hehe...fro like a scarey storie to a love/romance story ......

corva <> Thu Aug 6 03:10:02 EDT 1998

emberly! you will be able to see all of my pictures soon enough but if you need them now, all you need do is ask-works better than trying any hints with this one. I rather thought you should put a poem or six under your picture! ...this one was/is no good at the school thing...um, leaving in about week now, off to the Emerald City, will be at thecrownest@earthlink.net as off the 24th?25th of August?...so odd it will be to out of the loop for a few weeks after being here so much for the last-wow-more than a year now...bout sticks' stories:Tech, TLO, Sticks, PaperAngel, Corva, Sid, Infurita(sp?), um, who am i missing? help me and Lyrin out? Grey's should be there, soon?

Cat <Off to work soon> Thu Aug 6 08:28:51 EDT 1998

Apparently I'm behind in my readings... Just got TEB yesterday, too tired to do any reading last night. Also, I didn't realize that people had been adding stories off in the Walkabout... Argh! I have no time to read! Carol's coming back this weekend, so I'm cleaning pretty much constantly until then! (That's not really a complaint, though.)

Corva, safe travels!
--Cat

corva <> Thu Aug 6 12:19:30 EDT 1998

my thanks for all of the dear wishes for my journeying! they will be placed in a heavy vellum envelope along with alaskan flowers, glacier silt, pictures, goodbye hugs, road maps, mountain air, and memories for the goings....dropped a huge amount of cash for stories/books on tape to travel with us! has anyone heard of Odds Bodkin? a bard/talespinner not to be missed!!!...the count-down continues...good cleaning vibes from this soon to be clean house to yours cat! any luck lyrin?

sticky <> Thu Aug 6 13:14:06 EDT 1998

peace.. just a short note..

lyrin <> Thu Aug 6 15:26:29 EDT 1998

nope not yet...im about to give up

Cat <Cat@cybergeek.net> Thu Aug 6 23:21:56 EDT 1998

Stickman-- do me a favor an take down Ronin's story anywhere you have it posted. It's about to be subsumed by the Mark II version, much expanded but incorporating pieces (particularly the opening) of the first. No point in having both versions up, as I'm off to finish up the new version now... (It turned out longer than I expected, is what delayed it...)

--Cat

corva <> Fri Aug 7 02:54:35 EDT 1998

would it help get Lyrin to the other stories by feeding their addresses to him? I know of other folks who's computers haven't let them wander about and find things...dunno, just a late night thought....Zzzzzzzzzzz

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Fri Aug 7 04:22:50 EDT 1998

Ember, the Angel and Annachie pic is one I took on Angel's camera when she was here. Corva sent me a color xerox of it. So she's got one, although color xeroxs are expencive. I'd post it for you if I had a scanner. G'night all.

Cat <cat@sleep> Fri Aug 7 04:23:32 EDT 1998

It's done!!! I finished it! Ronin's Story Mark II is finished. I am now sending it out to those whose characters figure most prominently into it, and I'll figure out some way to make the finalized version of it available after I get their feedback... Ye Gods, but my brain is burnt. Apologies in advance for how looooooooonnnnnnnnggggggg it is...

--Cat

corva <> Fri Aug 7 11:22:52 EDT 1998

hey what baout us who just may want to read it? how long do we have to wait? and emberly should have no worries, she may putter through what ever photos and copies of such that i have...

Crimson <JSBeret@hotmail.com> Fri Aug 7 11:53:12 EDT 1998

Wow...be locked away from the net a few days and can barely read all the messages. thanks all for the adresses; I'll try to check them out when I'm not dashing here and there in this pack-for-college hysteria. Sid, I'm from Wheelersburg, which is (this will sound strange to non-native peoples) Two hours downriver (east) of Huntington, two and a half hours upriver (southest) of Cincinatti, (if you take the double-A highway in Kentucky) two hours straight south of Columbus, and about three hours north of Lexington. THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!!!!! Um, half an hour upriver of Portsmouth, half an hour downriver of Ashland. Go to school at OU Ironton. And you?

Crimson <> Fri Aug 7 11:57:32 EDT 1998

Who need the Mad river? I live on the Ohio, which was so polluted it burned. Not just Once. Not just twice. Some of the fish that come out are just like you find down at the docks of Bordertown...

sticky <> Fri Aug 7 12:25:59 EDT 1998

Cat> will do asap..

Cat <Cat@cybergeek.net> Fri Aug 7 23:52:45 EDT 1998

Still burned out from writing that ending. Counting the hours 'til Carol's return-- I've commissioned a cheesecake in her honor! te he.

Stickman>> Thanks. Once I have the strength (& feedback) for a final bout of editing, I'll get the replacement to you...

Um, Corva? you *are* one of the ones whose characters figure prominently... if you didn't get a copy of it last night, write me tonight & I'll correct that.

Love to all,
Cat

Lyrin <> Sat Aug 8 00:43:19 EDT 1998

Crimson--I'm in Bethel, in Clermont County, about 30 miles from Cincinnati. Wheelersburg sounds familiar, but I don't think I've ever been there. Looks like(on a map) you're about 100 miles away from me. At least, the map I'm using. :)

But yes, the Ohio is polluted. My dad works in Air Pollution Control, so he knows all about that.

Lyrin, when I get back from work, I'll find you addresses. Do you have an email address I can send them to or would you rather me post them here?

Cat, further comments on your wonderful story will be forthcoming. I didn't get a chance to finish it last night.(and I'm not kidding when I say wonderful--wow!!)

anyway, off to work.

ARGH! I take back any snide thoughts I had about people cleaning their rooms! I'm hip-deep in spring cleaning (in the summer, of course), and I'm going to be up all night in order to have the place habitable by the time Carol comes home! The scary part is, that doesn't even count *my* writing area-- it's gotten worse since I cleaned it a week ago!

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Mon Aug 10 05:46:31 EDT 1998

Lyrin, how about "half-heard?" Faint? Indistinct? There also needs to be a word for that feeling, which is similar to deja-vu, that there's a word for a situation but you just can't think of it when there really isn't such a word. Hmmm. G'night all.

Sid <at work, bored as usual.> Mon Aug 10 11:29:10 EDT 1998

background noise?

Welcome back, Carol! (Cat, I hope you got the house cleaned.*g*)
On a cleaning note, I now have a clean desk and am 56 dollars richer--that's how much change I had hiding out on my desk. Along with cleaning out coat pockets(record money found: $40), cleaning off my desk is the next big moneymaker.

Still no word from the agent, if anyone's wondering. I sent him a nice "Hi, haven't heard from you" email on Friday... we'll see. Probably doesn't help that I'm an impatient person.
On a lighter note, I'm now sewing a dragon... interesting pattern that I'm going to redo, cause it has too many pieces. But the dragon looks cool. I want to have one to sit on my shoulder when we go to the RenFaire this year. :)

Crimson <JSBeret@hotmail.com> Mon Aug 10 12:26:22 EDT 1998

Lyrin, try 'muttered' or 'garbled' for conversation, voices.... 'murmurred' if it's a more lyrical but indistinct conversation; the first two sound like it got chopped up. 'Muttered' if you want to intimate secrecy, 'mumbled' if you just want to have an indistinct conversation and place the blame on the speakers.... I always edit so much better than I write, because word choice freezes me.

Grey, I know you talked about a story a couple screens back; if you could send it sometime I'd appreciate it; good luck on morgages. Can you assume the mortgage of the last person in the house if you're just moving in? I know a couple who did that, and so paid off the last twelve years of a twent-year motgage. I may be off for a long time because of this moving to Chicago stuff... I just got my university files cleaned out here, (what a heartbreaking task... all those funny two-year old letters) Conversation is something I'm not always good at. Depends on how much caffeine I have (Cafeine and chocolate are the world's most addictive drugs. Don't believe me? Switch the pot to decaf and watch firsthand withdrawal...)

Hi, guys. I'm back.

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Thu Aug 13 00:23:37 EDT 1998

HI Guys I'm back! Whew, what a trip! I'm completely exhausted, my voice sounds like one of those Budwieser frogs and my feet and legs are so sore from standing, walking and dancing. But I had a blast. Our products did really well, tourneys went well, saw a bunch of bitchin portfolios, met a lot of way cool people, got some neat books and games, partied hearty at the SafeHouse. Trin - augh! You just missed me! I was at the SafeHouse everynight from Tues-Sun, execept for Saturday (when we ended up on the hotel roof howling at the moon! Ooowwoooooo! :D). Rained most of the time, but a warm summer rain. I sold all of the Hitomi prints I made, plus a matted copy of a lineart piece that was in the art show. Signed a lot of L5R cards and even my one Magic card! That was so cool! ;) I missed you guys! Finally found TEB last night at the local bookstore, gotten through the first few sections - where's my damn backpack??? For folks looking for stories, I know Stickman posted a BTown story I wrote called The Emerald Dragon, but I'm not sure where it is. Sticks?? Can ya help us out?? ;) Well, I must sleep now - must recover so I can trot off to the San Diego ComiCon on Friday. If any of you are gonna be there, come by the AEG booth and ask for Cris! It's good to be back, my friends! Luv, Elly

Travelin' time for all it seems. Corva, good luck on the move. Hope it all goes smoothly. Elly, I'll see you in SD. Decided I'd bring some spec animation scripts I've written; a Batman Animated and a Men In Black Animated, down to the con and do a little schmoozing. Eighteen copies, and I just wrote my agent's name and address on each one. Does that mean I can get ten percent of his ten percent? Mainly going down just to have fun, but ya gotta work the room. Good travels all. G'night. See you when I get back on Monday.

thought i'd drop a quick note that didi will be at comicon. don't know if she mentioned it on the list (i couldn't get onto my email....grrrr....) but if there is some sort of intercom to go paging people with.....didi is something like 5'5" with short hair and would prolly come if called *grin* seriously, if there is a way for you kids to accost her down there, i am sure it would rock her world.

good travels to all.....corva, don't forget to call me when you get in (woohoo!)

think someone tried to break into my place last night....think it also happened about a week ago too.....that plus some other things i don't like about my living situation has me angry/edgy....i want to move, i want to be safe, i want to use my tactical baton to smash the person who would dare try to invade *MY* space........sigh.......and i am having no luck apartment hunting......feh........

don't mind me. i'm just grumbly cause i am so tired i have a permanent headache......

lyrin: i empathize with your situation. i had a few experiences like yours....new principals with rules that don't make sense. not that i didn't see the reasons behind their stupid new rules, but it always sucks when someone tries to control some piece of your life.....unfortunately, it never entirely stops.....so just pretend to play along (unless you're up for the fight, in which case i'll send ya battle vibes) and think nasty thoughts at the principal.....

sigh.....sorry, here i am, an old lady who should "know better" and i'm too cranky to care......check me out, encouraging violence...and i am such a submissive lamb *snicker*

miss emberella better go before she gets kicked off the list for bad behavior....

oh, elly, which card did you do? hate that game, but like the art (too connected to that stupid game and company to have simple issues......)

okay, time to go pretend i want to be here......tomorrow is my last day at this job....and it feels like the last couple days of school.....not a lot to do, restless, and fulla attitude......

NRL - I'll see you in SD - if I can get away from the booth, I'll introduce you to my buddy Evan Dorkin, who has written for Space Ghost Coast to Coast and the Superman Animated Series - perhaps he can help you out in your quest? ;) Ember - I did a Portal card for Magic called "Bee Sting" - it's a green card with a goblin running away all wacky from a swarm of bees. What's you're connection to WotC? Have you done work for them? I used to play Magic till it got too expensive and competitive - then the fun went out of it for me. Have you ever played L5R? Thats the ccg my work designs, and we make a huge effort to provide good customer service and keep card costs down and promote honorable behavior among our fans. Well, gotta go - off to the drawing board (or the Mac, as the case may be this week). Luv, Elly

elly: you know evan dorkin?!?!?!? man........he's awesome........um, as far as me n WotC.....back when the business was run out of peter and kathy's basement, many of my closest friends worked there (including didi).....(actually, i knew peter and kathy before that, but that was cause i hung out with peter's sister for a while)....anyhow, many of those friends got canned in the first, terrible mass firing.....though a good handful still do work there (just got back from lunch with one). also, i am on a card cause jesper myfors and i are friends. and i'm his favourite model *grin* and the building is right next door to the one i work in (that is one of the things i will miss when i start my new job monday....no longer close to the few dear friends who work there.....)......um....magic...i never learned to play. because, before it even got competitive, "everyone" was playing....including the boyfriend of that time (now a dear friend)....and i hated to feel like one of those girls who just stands around while her boys game. and after enough people tell me i really must learn to do something that i was only vaguely interested in to start, i get cranky.....the 3-year-old in me plants her feet and refuses to cooperate. anyhow, the only game i ever did learn (well, the only card-based) was jyhad. mostly cause my little brother was playing both magic and jyhad. and since i refused to learn magic, i gave in to jyhad so we could play together. but i haven't played in sooooo many years.....and only played once or twice......*shrug* i am usually literally broke anyhow. so it behooves me to *not* have a habit that encourages any sort of money being spent.....*grin*

and now that i've written an essay on myself and wotc.......

though i keepo thinking now i should learn magic. cause the little boys upstairs looked so disappointed that my only interst in magic was the occasional nifty artwork.....*grin*

don't worry stick, my roomie and didi are at comicon too, and i'm stuck here in an unhappy apartment all alone *pout* *snicker*

Card games>> I played and enjoyed Give Me The Brain just recently. It's from a company called Cheapass Games; if they have a website, I don't know where it is (haven't looked). With four players, the game was really fun... Haven't played magic in years; it's kind of like role-playing in that it can be really fun or really un-fun depending on whom you're playing with, and most of the people I enjoyed are too far away now!

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Fri Aug 14 04:03:10 EDT 1998

Elly, see? Schmoozing already. That would be great, thanks. Played Magic a few times with my brother who beat me just about every time. Finally realized why. Because he's get a math brain and when you strip away all the color and pretty pictures it's all just addition and subtraction, and if you can't keep it all in your head, you lose. My favorite card game was a predecessor of Magic called Wiz War. Me and my borhter were fanatics about it for a while. A great, fun game with a scence of humor and a lot of stategy and wacky spells, such as the "Thumb of God" in which when you played the card you could flick a dice at the board with your thumb and all the pieces would then remain where they scattered to. Well, it's 1:00 and I have to get up at 9:00 to make the train to SD. Guess I better start packing. G'night all!

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Fri Aug 14 12:58:14 EDT 1998

Hi guys, Cat - I just bought Give Me The Brain at the con - haven't played it yet, but I've been told its a blast and I've played some other Cheapass Games and they've all been fun. I met the Cheapass guys at GenCon and they might be interested in me doing art for thier games. Cool!!! :D I have to get a cartoony portfolio together for them. They were so funny - they were wearing these pink and white striped "burger joint uniforms" to promote thier semi-sequal to Give Me the Brain, called Lord of the Fries. Too funny. Another cool little game you might wanna check out is Guillotine, made by WotC, but it's not a ccg. That one's great fun, too. I met Evan Dorkin several years ago at the San Diego con, when I was trying to get into the comics biz. He and his girlfirend, Sarah Dyer, who does a great all-femme comics anthology called Action Girl, were absolutely wonderful in giving me good advice and moral support during that difficult time. I only get to see them at the cons, since they live in NY, but we try to hang out there and keep in touch periodically thru email. If you can find any of Evan's Pirate Corp$ (later changed to Hectic Planet), that is by far his best work. Milk $ Cheese are funny, but in PC$, he does some great character-driven stories that I think all you townies would appreciate. I'll see if I can't score a few extra copies at the con for trade. As far as a BTown ccg - well, I suggested a BTown rpg to AEG when I first started working there, but no one else was hip to it. I think I read something about Teri Windling owning the rights to such a thing, but I don't think it's ever ben published. I think (no, I KNOW) it would be an awesome role=playing setting! Well, send me all your healing vibes so I can ditch this cold that hit me yesterday and be in good shape for the con. I'm gonna dowse myself in echineacia today. :P Immune System Failing....Harddrive Crash Imminent...Danger! Danger!! Luv, Elly

apologies all around for the absence of posts. Life caught up and tapped me for the Red mana. Sticky, you slay me, buddy. I wanna be exalted on a card like Miss ember!!! Why do all the little boys get to take her into their hot little hands and not-- (thoughtful pause) Better you than me missy! Was at a party where I drank too much vodka at the start and said really awful things (not mean). My mouth was filthy filthy filthy. I had to tell the 'I'm a gay, black man' story a few times, which rated the evening as kinky. It was a birthday party. I was refferred to as 'vanilla' so things went down hill as my drunken pride spurred me to show everyone I wasn't vanilla. I'm just happy they laughed when I explained why the birthday boy needed to be cremated. Lessee, I nearly ran out of the house when they threatened B'day boy with removing clothes. Gahhhh! The mention of Depends and g-strings in the same sentence had me and Van's s.o. screaming. Our inner children where not scarred, they were put into comas. I was hit on by all the girls, which was fine, and proclaimed 'one of the guys' by the gay men, but not their type of guy as I still have this other equipment, which I don't mind. All the submissives and Dom/mes were a trip. I couldn't do that. I don't like to dominate and if *anybody* tried to dominate me it would be me in the bizarre homicides dictionary. "Girl knocks out victim, fills them full of candy, superglues all victim's orifices shut, hangs them upside down in a tree and beats them with a stick until the sweets explode from various injuries."

Should probably sign off, I'm rambling and I need to go see family members. Help G'mum since her basement flooded and see the local parental unit.

Elly, you are commanded to get well and I will get back to the ML today or tomorrow. Promise.

Saw something yesterday that I thought would amuse y'all...I was out on the highway pretty early with the sidekick and we passed an old, battered pick-up truck with a gun rack. Now, we see jillions of these things in Oklahoma, and my mind immediately went, "Ding! Redneck!" But then I did a double-take and yelled to the sidekick, "Slow down and let that red truck pass us--he's got a sword in his gun rack!" Sure enough. When he passed us we could clearly see a well-used fencing saber in his gun rack. LOL. It totally made my day. Will have to work it into a BTown story someday.

Saw Elly, who dutifully introduced me to Sarah Dyer, who was nice but not much help. Ah well, schmoozing is like that, sometimes. Thanks anyway, Elly. On the other hand, an old friend of mine I hadn't seen in years jumped into an elevator at my hotel just as the doors were starting to close and in less than a minute I found out he was now directing animated shows and was looking for writers, so.... Things happen out of the blue sometimes too. Cool! What else? HAd the worst taco I've ever had. Saw odd people of every shape and size. Hung out with masked wrestlers both male and female. Went to Tijuana, had a mexican Coke (they still use straight cane sugar) Weeee!!!! Went to the Fantagraphics party. Saw friends from all over the country. Flirted with people I shouldn't have. Didn't flirt with people I should have. Walked more in three days than I have in the last three months, saw, but was too shy to speak to Apollo Smile and compared eyebrows with Mike Kaluta. Yup. A pretty damn good time. G'night all!

Wow, I have missed so much... Now I'm a broke college kid in Chicago, and I need to play the political games to keep scholarships but I want to go hang out with the Goths (who love the Ren Faire outfit I brought) but I am so close to Bristol Faire, and I can't find a ride!!!! AAAGH!! Help! HELP!!! >>Pass the brain is a good game for post-midnight Soon I'll figure out this 'EL' and get downtown, right now I'm still doing scheduling. I am on a college campus with 3 guys to every girl, 7 frats, 2 sororities who don't even bother to rush, and have figured out that frats loves girls attening their rush (where girls go, guys follow. Good for rush.) >>I'll be out for a while until I unlearn OU's computer system and learn this one. Keep on dancing...

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Wed Aug 19 00:12:27 EDT 1998

hiya folks back from the San Diego Con as well. Sorry I wasn't much help, NRL, but sounds like luck found you! :) Good luck with that! And it was good to see you again anyways, though I was doped up on cold medicine and enslaved at the booth. Yes, the con was, as usual, surreal in the extreme. From five year olds in Batman and Robin suits to porn stars in latex to 30 year olds in spandex to 14 year olds in Sailor Moon outfits, to goth chicks and Tank Girl look-alikes to things I can't even describe, it's always a visual extravaganza. Caught up on my books, saw some old friends, went on the Great Hotel Room Quest, sort of saw a sea lion (I think - it was dark - it was either a sea lion, a seal or a dolphin!!), ate yummy seafood and gathered portfolios. I'm feeling much better now - that echinaecia stuff really works! Angel - I'll be up for some partying Angel-style when I'm fully recovered! Whoo hoo! I'll even flirt with you! ;) I hadn't realized that was the hip thing to do at the Ferret. Sigh, oh well. Well, I should go to bed early tonight. Hugs all round! Luv, Elly

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Wed Aug 19 05:11:39 EDT 1998

Mmmmm, goth chicks and Tank Girl look alikes! My favorites! How could I forget? Sticks, Sid, next year I'll send my private B52 bomber to come pick you up and we'll all go together. Just as soon as I get that bomber. Elly, glad you're feeling better. And fret not about not helping more. It was great to see you. Too bad we couldn't hang out more. I would have liked to talk to you more about AEG and just stuff. Oh well. Next time. G'night, all.

Yeah, Angel, sorry about that, I suddenly went WTF?! WHY WAIT?! Eheheheh...Angel's making me spend money, people, she keeps showing me prettttty things. *_* Oh, the Kuan Yin 'temple' was awe-inspiring. I didn't drop to my knees but I came smegging close. Sigh...Mm, and chocolate, and black M&Ms, and...yes, I'm having a good time up here. ^_~ Even if it is INSANELY HOT... (and I don't just mean Angel's choice in lingerie either! *eg,d,&r*)

Elly <SkeltnGrl@aol.com> Thu Aug 27 02:12:07 EDT 1998

Hiya Kids, doin' fine on my end. Gettin' through the new BTown book slowly amoungst the other reccomended reading I've been given for work. One of which is a really interesting book about Isaac Newton and his double life as practical scientist and alchemical scholar. Hmmmm! I really like the "guidebook" sections of TEB. I think with a little development, this material could turn into a rockin' rpg. Sigh. Will my dream ever become a reality?? My other vision is a bitchin' animated movie - al la Akira but not so anime. But with that mature-audiences feel. God, just the Danceland story would make such a cool movie!! I've kinda started making notes on what info would be needed to make a core BTown rpg rulebook. We'd need a mechanics system, tho. I asked our head game designer at work and he suggested adapting the Everway rules. I haven't had the chance to check them out, but it might work. The main mechanics subject would be the technology/magic unpridictablilty angle. This gives a lot of option to roll the dice. I'm not much of a dice person, really - most of the role playing I've done was heavy-story, light-dice, which I think is ideal. But some random factors would add a lot, I think. Just compiling a list of places in BTown has my head buzzin with cool ideas for adventures. Oh, and Ms. Windling, if you're reading this and concerned with copyright violation, don't worry- I have no intention of doing anything with this without your permission!! Right now it's just a personal obsession! If anyone has any ideas or is interested in contributing, let me know! This post is like a freakin' novel so I'll go away now and do laundry. Take care, guys! {{{{{{{{{{BTowners)))))))))) Luv, Elly

A fine idea, Elly. One I've had many times, but never found the energy to do anthing with. Yeah, where is everybody? I've been in dead line hell. This is a good thing on the one hand, because it mean's somebody's paying me to write. But a bad thing on the other hand, because they're not paying me very much and they want it RIGHT AWAY! I'm rewriting this guy's script, and it's a major overhaul and a little nerve wracking. Ever get halfway though a project that somebody's paying you for, or expecting you to complete and you're not sure how to finish it. Uh-oh! I'll make it out. Today was the crisis day, and I think I'm back on track, I hope. Off to sleep. G'night all.

Did you ever wonder if anyone would notice if you disappeared off the face of the earth?

Michael Korolenko <korry@msn.com> Sat Aug 29 19:51:37 EDT 1998

It's been interesting reading the messages on this bulletin board (and certainly a nice break from some of the manuals I've been writing and editing). I noticed one person from the Seattle area. Any others? Reason I ask is - every summer I conduct a class at the college where I teach called "Making Movies." Last summer we made a seventy minute vampire film called "Nighters." We shot it digitally and transferred it to 16mm. film. There are definitely some echoes of the Border in the piece. We had a screening last month at the Broadway Performance Hall in Seattle and on Sept. 26th we're having a screening at the Carlson Theater at Bellevue Community College. Before you get too excited, realize that the people working on and acting in this thing never did anything like it before (most students had one or two quarters of video). There's also a sound designer I'd like to have killed, but other than that, the students did a terrific job (we're talking a budget of about $500.00). In any case, if any of you are interested, let me know and I can email or snail mail you an invitation. In any event, I'm glad I found this site and enjoy reading messages written by so many creative and interesting people. Wish my students were as creative.

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Sun Aug 30 06:08:28 EDT 1998

Whassa matta, Claris? Who dissappointed you? Who do we kill? And we'd notice if you dissappeared. After a few days of someone not appearing on the board I always get antsy. Speaking of which, has Angel dissappeared? Haven't heard from her or her elf in some time now. Is it beacuase the board is too long? Should I e'mail people? SHould I sleep? Yes. G'night.

It's that long "Aaaaiieeeee!" on the way that clues me in.

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Mon Aug 31 01:49:02 EDT 1998

Hiya kids! hey, that Nighters movie sounds cool. If there's a videotape available you might have some interested parties! Claris, sometimes people are selfish and don't realize that folks are affected by what they do. :( Hope no one's hurt you too bad, but as Nathan, pointed out, we got your back, baby! Yeee! And yes, Nathan, you must sleep you bloodthirsty avenger! :) Hope your writing project is coming along well. And Claris - there's plenty of folks who'd wonder where you'd trotted off to if you disappeared - and we'd hope you'd bring back pictures of what it's like off of the face of the earth! Sounds like an interesting place! As far as Angel and Van - I believe our feathered mistress had gone on walkabout but will be returning to the fold shortly. I hope so, cuz I want to find out if Elly's gonna be able to use her key! I'm on pins and needles!! Tensions are running high in BTown and our Guide has forsaken us!! :O Some good news for me - Eric went halvsies (no relation to halfies) with me on an air conditioner and it's working away as we speak to cool down my place and keep me from perspiring till I expire! Yay! Gods bless modern technology! And thanx to the fortunes that we didn't have to jimmy it with a spellbox. Fontana may be akin to Hell, but at least the machines work. :) Night all! Luv, Elly

Speaking of missing people? Where's Cat? Next weekend i get to stay the night with an insane man, wake up and go watch people try to 'kill' each other in a LARP too violent for the SCA to approve. I'm going to be a mage/healer (medic) and be protected by some VERY large and dangerous males from all the other dangerous males. Is this sane? No. But it's fun...

Cat <Cat@cybergeek.net> Tue Sep 1 00:34:35 EDT 1998

The answer: Tennessee. I went back up to the first college I attended, in order to see my cousin get married. Since she's on my Dad's side of the family, there was a lot of additional family to see and interact with-- not to mention an old family tradition to the effect that if you stand still long enough, you're an honorary family member! Lot's of fun, and a great location-- the buildings are all constructed of rough-cut sandstone, and the campus police have been kind enough to put a ladder up to one of my favorite rooftops while I was away. Admittedly, I don't think they intended anyone to actually use it (what with the locked metal screen over the bottom six feet or so), but if that was the case then they shouldn't have put a ladder there, right? Still, I had to find another way down-- I don't think they'd have been too happy with me if I'd still been there when they arrived... I miss night-climbing...

On the other hand, the student body hasn't changed much, so I was also forcibly reminded of exactly why I transferred out. Very snobby place...

Claris>> You may assure yourself that your absence would be noticed; and in fact, I hereby forbid you to vanish! ;-p

Cat <Where I went, and what I wrote while I was there> Tue Sep 1 00:46:20 EDT 1998

Sewanee was, (is, and always will be for me) the perfect setting for a werewolf story. Perhaps it's the close proximity of highbrow intellectual snobbery and untamed, uncut forest. It is possible, for example, to walk from the quadrangle, down past one of the dormitories, along a road, and out to the edge of the cliff-- a trip that takes perhaps twenty minutes on foot. From there, it is possible in a matter of minutes to isolate oneself from all signs of civilization.

The paths through the forest serve to emphasize, rather than counter, the fact that these woods (both around the town and in places within it) are still basically primal; it's like one of the old stories: stray from the path and be lost. The woods (during the summer) are never silent; the insects make a constant, humming chorus around you, a sussurrus of sound that flows around you and envelopes you. It's generally pretty humid, and during the day it can be fairly hot. In winter the trees are bare, the woods much quieter, and the moonlight peeks through the trees to the fallen leaves below. Most impressive of all, above the size of the trees, above the sense of isolation, above the way the forest surrounds you, is the sense of presence. It's easy enough to see, in a place like this, why all those cathedrals are decorated to resemble forests. It's awesome (original sense of the word).

The college itself itself is, in a more sophisticated way, equally impressive. While the town is mostly wooden houses, some large, some small, the college buildings are walled in rough-cut chunks of mortared sandstone. The design is semi-gothic, with ramps and stairway and arched windows; several of the walkways have crenellated walls, many of the stairs are iron and spiral. The arms that form either end of the quadrangle are home to small towers, each containing such a stair. Lastly, St. Luke's chapel forms one entire side of the quadrangle, a cross-shaped church with a rose window on the front, a bell tower (home to the Sewanee Carrilon) on one side, stained glass and high arches all around.

All of this makes the rooftops easily accessible, in some cases even pleasant, places to visit. (Go at night and don't let anybody see you, though-- the police get very excited about this sort of thing.) In the back of the quadrangle is the observatory, a moderately difficult free climb, but well worth it for the occasional pleasure of surprising a lingering astronomy student.

Finally, there are the caves, which deserve a monograph all their own. Places of pitch blackness, home to bats and a few albino insects, ranging in size from the narrowest crawlspaces to some fairly large caverns, the caves occupy a position of honor at Sewanee-- spelunking is an experience everyone should have. The Domain has more caves per square mile than any other area of Tennessee.

This is where I spent my first 2 1/2 years of college; and I still love the place. (It's the students I had nothing in common with...)

There's a website for it somewhere, but I like my description better...

Elly <SkeletnGrl@aol.com> Tue Sep 1 01:16:34 EDT 1998

Wow, Cat! Sounds like your trip was way cool! Your descriptions were fabulous! I wish I could see it. I was treated so some natural splendor myself today. It's been terribly hot - major heatwave with record highs in the thriple digits. And humid, too. Today was especially wet, but around 6 or so, the wind started to kick up and soon the sky got all gloomy and dark and there was a brief flurry of huge raindrops, then we got to witness an amazing lightening storm! Flashes every few seconds, with big, majestic forks blazing down here and there. Some arching across the sky, some up above the clouds that made the whole sky glow. It was fantastic! I rushed home after work and sat out on my patio with a beer and just watched the lightshow for an hour or so. It's still flashing out in the distance. It was way cool! Blade was pretty fun. It's a wacky action flick, but it had a lot of cool stuff and some neat fight scenes and a cool club scene at the beginning is pretty intense. I liked it. Just don't go in expecting Interview with a Vampire! But it does have a lot of Vampire: the Masquerade envy. There's one passing scene that I swear to god is taken directly from a Tim Bradstreet illustration. By the way, if anyone digs on Tim's art, my company has just published an art book of his stuff. Gorgeous book - great art and presentation. And Tim's a genuinely nice guy - got to meet him cuz he's come out a couple times to do signings at shows for us. Big teddy bear of a guy! Lemme know if anyone's interested and I'll get ordering information for ya. Well, off to bed soon for me! Take care, all!! Luv, Elly

Cat, once again a beautiful evocation of place. Very nice work, although the bit where the albino insects ranged in size from the narrowest crawlsapce to fairly large caverns made me wonder a moment if you had'nt been sampling mushrooms in those woods. LOL. G'night all.

Sid <> Tue Sep 1 09:24:34 EDT 1998

Wow, Cat! Sounds like a wonderful place to visit. I'll put it on my list. :)

NRL...alnino insects...LOL!!!

Crimson <JSBeret@hotmail.com> Tue Sep 1 12:28:34 EDT 1998

Oh, Cat, you make me homesick... Such loving description I can almost see it, like the hills and caves and abandoned coal mines of home; you bring tears to my eyes when i look up from the parking lot and see the chicago skyline one way, the projects the other... Michael... at which college do you teach? By the By, if I'm not confusing myself, i think when i was skimming through archives i met my own name, a long, long time before i came on. Should i be embarrased? I found a new clover patch here, so I'm happy sitting on the lawn and searching for the four-leaf clovers. Found some, too.

Michael Korolenko <korry@msn.com> Tue Sep 1 13:22:49 EDT 1998

Crimson - in answer to your query I teach at Bellevue Community College in the Media Communication & Technology department.

Crimson <> Tue Sep 1 16:33:31 EDT 1998

Michael->Thanks... have a person down the hall who was inquiring. When I said 'I dunno, somewhere around Seattle I guess" They jumped on the mention of anything near their home (hundred miles is near?)

Michael Korolenko <korry@msn.com> Wed Sep 2 04:29:30 EDT 1998

Crimson - yes, a hundred miles is considered "near" out here, as opposed to New York City where I originate from: if you can't reach a place by subway it's far far away. BCC is a good college - a little too much attention on the technology and too little on theory. Where are you guys located?

Cat <Cat@cybergeek.com> Wed Sep 2 11:28:02 EDT 1998

Okay, so maybe the insects don't get *that* big... ! LOL

I'm currently living in Lawton, Oklahoma-- not quite the middle of nowhere, though you can see it from here-- but I make my home in Ft Worth, Texas, if that makes any sense...

homesickness>> Yeah, I really miss the place (if not, by and large, the people)-- it has a great energy to it, enough presence to make an animist of anybody. One of things I tried to do while I was up there is gather my impressions of the place, so that I would have a sort of written reminder of what it's like. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Elly-- I'm jealous! We haven't had a good lightning storm here in months!

I come from the woods and the wilds of the Southern Ohio River Valley, where the hills rise as the streams fall to the ohio, and the soil is clay, the rocks shale and coal, the humidity never dries below 40%, where we still use middle-english grammer in our slang, and the chemical plants and refineries gloss a strong, deep, hill tradition, where we are more at home with Kentucky and West Virginia than far-away flat Columbus...where mist rising after rain means moonshine, and the hills swarm with deer hunters, and the children leave to find jobs or stay on welfare, but keep coming back, where cityglow fades quickly away and stars shine. It wasn't until I came to live in Chicago that I realized how very deep and strong my roots are, and I don't want to go back but I miss it so much... *deep breath* sorry. I wax homesick at the oddest times!

Paper Angel <being beseiged by a needy kitten> Wed Sep 2 20:23:19 EDT 1998

So long, I ne'er did notice. School is underway and my Biology is kicking my ass. Missed your silent voices. After a lackadaisical summer I feel rushed for every moment. I'm doing something everyday. Today was the first day I got 7 whole hours of sleep! Woo, baby, that felt nice for a change.

Claris, puh-leeeeeeez don't drop off the planet? Must I beg?

Elly, I have *tons* of notes and compilings of people and places of B'Town as I have run a private game since 5 years ago. In the ML game 'Ground Zero' is a players character. (God, I used to *hate* that char. Violent.) I still have no AC. I went to relocate one from the abandoned apartment building next to mine only to find it was an empty casing. It inspired a haiku, which, if you don't know where it came from, sounds depressing and serene. The adventure in the abandoned apt. bldg. was bizarre. However, I'm not certain I could match Cat's glowing descriptions!

NRL, did I tell you I read the script you sent home with me? I think I wrote something about it in the note accompanying the pictures I owe you. AAARgh! Must mail those, I have some money now!!! (I have money, this means my car will break down within the week.) I'm looking into a local college which has a three year and single year exchange program with Japan. I also have aps for Washington in St. Louis (scary). I still haven't info on Seattle colleges. >sigh< We'll see.

Lyrin, that's some theory! While exceptionally impossible in the World, I think B'Town could see it happen. I have my own theory that halfies are sterile, m'self. Along the idea lines of mules...
I really need to run, love the bunch of you!!!
