Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Sun Feb 1 00:06:50 EST 1998

Phouka, you're right. ^_^ NRL, I did notice your riddle, I was just afraid to guess... ^-~

Cat <Cat@sonetcom.com> Sun Feb 1 02:45:07 EST 1998

Me, too. I'm a lousy riddle-person. Lousy at solving them, anyhow. I've never actually tried to write one...
Anyways...

Paper Angel <> Sun Feb 1 03:22:26 EST 1998

NRL, my guess was not fit for public consumption...! Like the limerick though!
My humble opinion on poets: The best is Thomas Chatterton, beyond all doubt. The best angsty poet: Stephen 'Screw You God!' Crane.
If I may quote:
Love walked alone.
The rocks cut her tender feet,
And the brambles tore her fair limbs.
There came a companion to her,
But, alas, he was no help,
For his name was Heart's Pain.

"Have you ever made a just man?"
"Oh, I have made three," answered God,
"But two of them are dead
And the third-
Listen! Listen!
And you will hear the third of his defeat."

Bleeeeeeeak...!

Sid <jst_clair@sprynet.com> Sun Feb 1 07:28:40 EST 1998

Bleaker than bleak. And when I pulled the board up this morning, I wondered why you were bleating, I was so tired. grin.

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Sun Feb 1 13:21:57 EST 1998

The answer, not that you want to know, is "A nun with a spear through her head." If you want more limericks, I got 'em. I spent too much time in college making them when I should have been studying, but they're fiiilthy, so I hesitate to post them here. As for real poetry, I'm afraid I've been afraid of it. Never touch the stuff. The only poet I've ever read at any length is Ogden Nash, who I like a lot. But he's silly.
I've got to get ot of the taxi business. I had an accident last night. Got caught in the middle of an intersection turning left when the guy in front of me stopped suddenly and a motorcycle coming the other way couldn't swerve in time. He ditched out. One dent on my hub-cap. The bike was totaled. The guy was okay, but it scared the shit out of me. He could have died and I would have been at least half responcible. It's all going on my record and I'm sure that my employers won't be very happy with me either. What am I doing here!?! Got to get back to scribbling where I belong and where I can't hurt anybody. But right now I've got to go get back in the cab and drive again. The rent is a cruel mistress. See y'all.

Annachie <annachie@ix.netcom.com> Sun Feb 1 14:50:44 EST 1998

Sorry to hear about the accident, NRL. I know the feeling. If I hadn't given in to sleep last night, I would have posted an answer to your 'riddle'. Oh well, that's life... Limericks are fun. My favorite is by Edward Gorey. Ahem...

A headstrong young woman in Ealing
Threw her two weeks' old child at the ceiling;
When quizzed why she did,
She replied, 'To be rid
Of a strange, overpowering feeling.'

Sorry to those of you who didn't think that was funny. On a related note, a friend of mine had a list of the top 100 reasons it is good being a guy. My girlfriend read it and she questioned me about one of the reasons. That reason being 'You think the idea of punting small animals is funny'. Granted, I would never do such a thing, but the idea got a giggle out of my friends and I. She didn't understand and we couldn't really explain it, but I guess that's why they say men are from Mars.

Sid <jst_clair@sprynet.com> Sun Feb 1 15:46:05 EST 1998

Sorry to hear about your accident, NRL. Sometimes it seems no matter what you do you're going to get hit. Glad you and everyone else are okay, though.

Annachie, Edward Gorey is a bit strange, but he's funny in a twisted sort of way.

the stickman <> Sun Feb 1 18:35:19 EST 1998

MY favorite limerick:

G.B. Shaw

There once was a man from St. Bee's
Who was stung in the arm by a wasp
When asked, "Does it hurt?"
He said, "No, it doesn't,
I'm glad it wasn't a hornet!"

(try saying it out loud... or telling it to someone.. cracks me up!)

Sid <> Sun Feb 1 19:15:12 EST 1998

That's absolutely horribly funny, Sticks! LOL!!

<> Sun Feb 1 23:59:19 EST 1998

Cat <Cat@sonetcom.com> Mon Feb 2 05:39:32 EST 1998

Have you noticed that in one of the later series of Amber books (Roger Zelazny), the main character actually meets an old hermit named Dave-- whose cavernous home emits an awful but mysterious stench?!?!?!? (I say this because we're on the subject of limericks...)

Grey <The Listening House> Mon Feb 2 17:21:25 EST 1998

NRL>> Your riddle WAS horrible. The reason I hesitated to answer it is because I feared the answer was something as gruesome as that. It reminds me of one of my favorite riddle pairs, the first riddle being "What's green and red and goes 100 miles an hour?" and the second being "What's green and brown and goes 100 miles an hour?" Being that these are classics, I'm sure most of you heard them by eighth grade. Ah, well. Those were the days...that I never want to go back to, and cringe even to think about!!! NRL, I'm so glad you and the other guy are ok. How scary. I'm praying to your muse, that he/she sends you something to write that will make you some $$$, so you can get off the streets. --Ethereally, Grey

NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Mon Feb 2 18:03:08 EST 1998

Grey, Annachie, thanks for your thoughts. Yes, I know a sign when I get run into by one. This one has GET OUT OF THE TAXI written on it in big red letters. Annachie,, Edward Gorey is one of my favorites. His Gastlycrumb Alphabet is one of the most hilariously gruesome bits of rhyme I've ever read. "E is for Edgar, devored by snails," or some such. Lovely.

Sticks, finally made it to your page. Very cool. That's what I always thought web pages should be like. Doorways to other worlds. They are so often disappointing. This was pretty groovy. I assume you'll be adding more corners as you go. G'night, all. Hmmmm, I just got an idea. I'll be back....

Annachie <annachie@ix.netcom.com> Wed Feb 4 14:49:37 EST 1998

birthdays, birthdays... so many birthdays! Mine was last month (the 29th). We should all get together around this time next year and have a party. Let's make it somewhere where it isn't raining. I like the rain and all, but we're currently feeling the effects of El Nino and it isn't a good thing.

Sid, snowed in!! <jst_clair@sprynet.com> Wed Feb 4 15:34:28 EST 1998

rain? Don't I wish. Right now, there's probably 6 inches of snow outside, and gonna be 9-12 inches by tonight. The library was closed, darn. :-) Like I wanted to go to work today anyway. The funny thing is, though, I left for work, and they called while I was pulling out of the driveway, so I drove a normally 15 minute drive in 30 mins, only to find out that I didn't have to be there anyway... Ah well.

Sticks, I still haven't found the magic lantern.

Corva <crownest@pobox.alaska.net> Thu Feb 5 14:40:48 EST 1998

I made it!!!! The board seems to have taken my offerings of old wire and tinfoil as a toll. So many BDays! Happy happy to all. "grey hairs being plucked, and from below my pillow a cricket sings", Basho. Getting older is a very odd thing. Poems and twisted ol' Gorey! I lost a number of friends in the last year. I found a great book all filled with Japenese Death Poems and their beauty lifts me. "Empty-handed I entered the world, Barefoot I leave it. My coming, my going--Two simple happenings, That got entangled", Kozan Ichikyo. There are some incredibly beautiful lines in this book. Each bit talks a little about the author of the poem and what happened around his death to illiminate it meaning more. And yes, the english translation is next to the original Japanese. Sticks! Where do you find all the time for this nifty building? I'm sure glad that you do though! With offers like that one to Grey, your gonna have a lot of character drawing requests pouring. Do you know if Terri has been on a wander through your/her world yet? I wonder what she would make of our shared/story/world? Is there anyway we can get our old posts back or are they truely gone? Terrible babbling, too long unable to find the Board...sorry... One more poem of Basho's to part with...`"A solitary crow on a bare branch - autumn evening" Good Travels All!

Hi everyone. I've been faithfully keeping up with the posts and my mail, but school hasn't given me much of a chance to actively participate. The rain here hasn't helped much either. On the up side, I'm off in a few hours to go snowboarding. Well, we'll see. If the roads and resorts aren't closed I'll be boarding.

TLO>> Did you participate in the 'library escapade' at Stanford?

TLO <moei@leland.stanford.edu> Sun Feb 8 02:02:26 EST 1998

No, didn't participate, since nobody came banging on the door at 3am. Ah well. And later on, at a reasonable hour, it turned out that they had more than enough volunteers to help clean out the library basement.

I heard that Tahoe got about four feet of snow...I really really wanna go skiing again. :/

So, where is Sid's story? I've been going nuts trying to find it! I've got a migraine from looking so hard...whee. ;) Not even a hint? Pretty please?

Hey Sid! I want a Sid & Peterson's T-shirt! What does it look like?

Sid <jst_clair@sprynet.com> Sun Feb 8 11:38:00 EST 1998

Well, the T-shirts are technically advertisements for the books Sid and Peterson wrote. The one I just did is for "Sid and Peterson's Practical Guide to Dragonslaying." It looks great! Still have to 'iron' out a few design problems, but its nothing major. On the front is The title, a castle, and a dragon, on the back will be highlights of contents, (Something like: Packed with Information! Lavishly illustrated, Tips from the experts, Dragon Anatomy) I have to do the back yet. And then at the bottom is the S&P disclaimer, which is great. I'm so excited!! (can't you tell?)

I mean, I first came up with this idea in 1993, its taken me this long to actually get the story together. I probably have a hundred or so different S&P titles: Practical Guide to Princesses, Treasure Hunting, Stepparents: Wicked or Otherwise, and a whole long list of more.

But I'm planning on posting the original design picture on one of my webpages, cause I want to sell the darned shirts. So I'll post a link when I do.

Boy, didn't mean to type so much... ;-)

Sid

Sid <> Sun Feb 8 13:59:38 EST 1998

Oh, yeah, after I get the picture up, if you really want one, provide the shirt and I'll do it for free. :-)

ember the Ice Queen <celestne@nwlink.com> Sun Feb 8 21:44:27 EST 1998

so, mr. annachie, this is where you hang out when you should be emailing *me*. have just been given the "insider tip" that one of the public broadcast stations up here is working on airing neverwhere and gaining rights....doing an interview w/ mr. gaiman and putting out neverwhere on tape with the interview attached. anyone care for updates? i will try to check the board regular-like. or will take private e. and am on the border list. my, i am so intouchable....*grin*

    sticky... CLOSE THE LINK!!!!

    Corva <> Sun Feb 8 23:35:22 EST 1998

Sticks, I found the Corva picture! The corvids are doin' flap-crazies and and the Bear says, "but how did Sticks do that?!"; I agree! Is there a way I can get a color copy of that in a bigger size? I'd be happy to send postage. My printer is old(b&w), and you know about trying to teach such things new tricks. Great T, Sid! What happened to those BTown Pub Crawl shirts, by the by? Out skiing with the Bear last week there was aface plant involed and he didn't want to do it this week end...we played in snowed in playground at the Valley of the Moon instead. This is a fine city, this Anchorage place is...

    Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Sun Feb 8 23:35:37 EST 1998

    Trying to close the link...
That's funny, the other Ember I know is a kender...Hmm. *g* Nice to see ya here.

    corva <> Sun Feb 8 23:51:39 EST 1998

    kender?

    Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Mon Feb 9 00:09:19 EST 1998

Kender: One of the redeeming traits of the early Dragonlance books, which weere the best of the lot. Kender are short, thin, pointy-eared, with lots of long, full hair, who have no concept of property ownership or of fear, and tend to walk around acquiring everything that isn't nailed down, and walking into trouble. They'd make great thieves if they understood the word 'steal.' *g*

    Paper Angel <wilderun@swbell.net> Mon Feb 9 01:17:03 EST 1998

pub crawl shirts were my department untill my money (ample at the time) was completely wiped out. Now I can't afford to do them but I did come up with a design and all. Had the prices figured and all... >sigh< Wish I hadn't got hit with all those bills, completely drained my book paycheck which was going to be used on the shirts.

Anyway, after a weekend (Fri-Sun) of Speech classes I had so much nervous, I'd-rather-die-than-get-in-front-of-all-these-people energy that I drew Corva and Sid and also remembered that I have never sent Trinlay the pic I did of her. Sid's pic turned into 'Manga Sid' so I scribbled up a superdeformed Sid, too. The two came out b&w, no gray. The Corva pic is more detailed... Don't know if they are comparable to sticky's, though.
Trin, I will send the pic of you if you can promise to not tell me how cheesy it is!!!

    Corva <> Mon Feb 9 03:02:26 EST 1998

Thank you for your answer Claris; I think I would like these kender ones...Angel, do we get to see these, er, us-s? It would be a grandness, it would...please?

    Annachie <annachie@ix.netcom.com> Mon Feb 9 03:03:50 EST 1998

Well, I'm back from my little excursion into snow chain territory and I'm happy to announce that I didn't die. :) I had to drive twice as long as I should have had to (due to the conditions), but the mountain was all powder and the storm warning (which I foolishly disreguarded) kept most people away this weekend. There's just something about carving your own path on the side of a mountain.

Hi Ember, welcome back to the border.

    NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Mon Feb 9 05:23:22 EST 1998

Sticks, cool Corva pic. When are you going to do one of me? When I send a picture, right? Angel, about that girly boy-y thing. Stay right where you are. I think we are all better when we stay close to the middle of the spectrum. I've never liked frilly women or macho men. Both seem like defencive posturing. I like people who are people first. So there. G'night all. Scrambled sleep habits this week-end. Feel weird. MAybe I'll try that sleep thing again. Might work this time.

    Sid <> Mon Feb 9 06:47:54 EST 1998

yeah, Angel, do we get to see the pictures? *grin* You drew a picture of me? wow. thanks. hehe, that's the longest link I've ever seen... Annachie, also glad you didn't die.:) Snow isn't fun to drive in, I know these things this past week.

One question, Angel, what is 'Manga'?

    Paper Angel <> Mon Feb 9 07:51:33 EST 1998

Manga is the japanese word for comics. I drew Sid in a japanese comic form. There is a sub-category of these comics called 'super-deformed' which means I basically drew another pic of Sid which looks like a little kid or doll. Tiny thing.
I'll scan them and send them out. Not done with Corva even though I started her first...
Annachie, I have always wanted to snowboard! Of course, I would really like to try the little known art of 'sand-boarding' too. Maybe a road trip to the closest sand dune desert is in order... Where would that be? Kansas...?
NRL, my philosophy is exactly that. I have decided it is much better to be both/neither male or female and just be human. Slays me as all the guys I know think I'm a man-hater because of this attitude. I sit between the two so I am seen as more masculine than femme, when it is simply that I am more so than most girls. If I were a boy I'd be seen as the opposite.

the totally embarrassed stickman <> Mon Feb 9 10:45:19 EST 1998

    oops.... sorry...

I WANNA SEE PIX angel! *grin*

NRL> when you send a pic, or at least a physical desc... *grin* working on the character from yer story for danceland! *grin* (i know he was at the ferret, but give me some leeway! *grin*)

    Corva <> Mon Feb 9 12:39:41 EST 1998

NaRL - Sticks did the Corva with out a photo thing. He takes words and makes them images! Most folks do that, but ours stay in our heads. Looking forwards to seeing the two Corva-s and the two Sid-s together. Then I'll have to ask Grey to scan in the photo I sent her a while back and the three corva-s can be seen. Very strange. But I've always thought that everyone is seen differently, day to day people look very different to me - some people more than others. There are a few that stay the same. And then those who have changed over the years, and my brain still sees them as they were; no matter how many photos I take and keep, or how much I try to make it live in the now... Angel, be sure that we are so very fond of the you that is; no matter how it fluxes and plays, it is still you!

    Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Mon Feb 9 12:43:13 EST 1998

So, this is a song from 'way back when *g*, and widely regarded as cheesy, I hear. But I like it, and I just noticed these lyrics in it...It strikes me that a Bordertownish/celtic rendition would serve it very well. ^_^

    Excerpt from "The Wayward Wind:"
Oh I met him there in a border town
    He vowed we'd never part
Though he tried his best to settle down
I'm now alone with a broken heart
And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

    Grey <the list'ning house> Mon Feb 9 17:12:08 EST 1998

I went, I saw, I was in awe...Great pic of Corva, Sticks! There you are, you lovely crow-mama, you! Amazing, Stick's pic looks a lot like the photo you sent me--maybe not detail-for-detail, but the spirit that unites the photo and the pic is strong. P'raps that's why I tend to despise photos. I had to do the formal "portrait studio" thing the other day. Gah! (to use a pungent word borrowed from Claris) It was a nightmare. The guy tilted my chin out and told me to say things like "shopping" and "diamonds." The photos aren't me. Completely absent are my lopsided sly grin, wry tilt of eyebrow, and the way I look up from under my eyelashes. I feel like my spirit was stolen.

--Grey, climbing down from my high horse

    Sid <jst_clair@sprynet.com> Mon Feb 9 17:56:37 EST 1998

Thanks, Angel! I understand now. Just tack it up to the fact that I'm clueless. :) A friend of mine got a scanner, so I'm going to have a picture of me up on one of my webpages soon!! I've always wanted to have one.
Claris, I don't think I've ever heard that song, but I like the lyrics! Grey, I'm going for a 'portrait' sitting with Chris on Saturday; I look absolutely horrible in pictures, I don't really want to go, but they're free...I know how you feel. Best picture ever taken of me was one I didn't even know was taken. sigh.

    Vandellyr Quior <wilderun@swbell.net> Mon Feb 9 18:01:48 EST 1998

But the next couple o' months are going to be crazy... On the other hand, it looks like Software may be going to become a real department instead of a subset of books, so I may end up being a manager by default... Pretty scary thought.
Angel, if it's any consolation to ya', neither Carol nor I saw anything wrong with your degree of *girlish* or *boyish* -- it just seemed pretty Paper Angel-ish, y'know?

I always think of you as Paper Angel and don't notice how boyish or girlish you are. Not to beat a dead horse or anything...but I really like you! Corva, I don't know if you read Charles DeLint, but you need to read Someplace to Be Flying--all your friends are in there!!

Saw something strange on my way to work today; five big crows(or whatever's around here), sitting on treebranches, and right in the middle was a huge, black bird, don't know what it was, but it was twice the size of the crows, and they were big themselves. And it looked like it had white feathers in its tail... I thought of Corva's buddies...

    Paper Angel <wilderun@swbell.net> Thu Feb 12 00:06:24 EST 1998

Thanks everybody. Wasn't looking for a show of support but it is always great when you get one! Grey, we need to have a OK-con. Get us Midwest people together. Looks like I am going to get to go to LA la land, my father's girlfriend works for an airline and I am asking for a ticket for my b-day. So, there it is. ^-^;; Happy am I! <-- Corvaisms are beginning to saturate my dialect... That is not a bad thing!
BTW, I had never heard of the Crow girls until I saw a scene Charles Vess had penned of them. Wish I had time to read, haven't gotten to the book Claris sent me, let alone 'The Flight of Michael McBride' which was purchased for me by Van's significant other. >grin< Oh, yeah, we be taking Van (chuckle) to Alladin on Ice... Hopefully he won't take it on himself to try and help the skaters win against that evil vizier.

    Sid <jst_clair@sprynet.com> Thu Feb 12 00:32:42 EST 1998

    Have fun at Alladin!

Yeah, if there was a con closeby, I'd go, I'm technically Midwest...Angel, I read the Flight of Michael McBride, can't remember if I liked it or was indifferent...
Any Jo Clayton fans here? I got an update about her from a fantasy list I'm on, its not good, will send you the email I received if anyone wants, so many prayers can be said...

    corva <> Thu Feb 12 03:08:57 EST 1998

I enjoyed the McBride book, wide images that drew me in. There were corvids there as well. Vess is grand! Thank you for your words about my scribblings; I am glad they made some sense to you. They are windows to me; I am not very linear or clear pathed, so they tend to follow that lead. YAH!! THERE WILL BE OUR ANGEL AT THE LALA THING!!! I will have to be there. There is this great tale "the king of crows"; thinking I am that was Midori's as well...hmmm, back to Newford for now.

Yep, Angel, Sid. A Midwest con would be a good thing. I would still like to host y'all, but I'll need to wait 'til the semester is over. Ya wanna help me plan the thing? I'm open to ideas. Norman is a little town in OK, but there's a university here.

Corva, be there or be cat food. Jamyang (m'cat) loooves birdies....

Grey, waiting til after the semester is a very very good thing!!! I've performed at the Norman Ren Fest, actually. So I've been there. Also lived in Miami OK for a bit. Have plenty of relatives (not family) in OK.

CAT FOOD!!!!!!!!!...angelfriend, er... I will work on taking that in a friendly manner but the thought of skaterat for cat food keeps popping up in this brain...gerhhg...Winter Faire is starting up this weekend. Dog sled s, big rides, fun foods, happy raven birds, snow art, all sorts of fun! The Bear and I were out watching the artists working today; trying to figure what those big blobs of packed snow (ten feet high or more) are going to be carved into it loads of fun!

Can't say I didn't get any this Valentine's Day (for once. *g*). *hugs* Anyway. Snow art! Sounds fun! I always loved that kind of thing. ^_^ BTW, Danceland on the MUSH has been redecorated for Valentine's, there's a party either the 14th or the 15th, not sure yet...

argh! i get so caught up in the inanities of life on this side of the terminal that i sometimes forget thta time is passing and i have places i'd rather be! Claris: i am not kender....think i'm too tall for the job *grin* and i tend to forget to worry about obtaining things....so they'd probably kick me out for "lack of acquisitions" or something. and i don't remember who was worried about the boy girl thing, but i can say this: most my life i have been considered one of the guys. and it has been good and bad. but i wouldn't trade it for anything. i think that the instant we try to let our anatomy define us, we are missing out. just because i don't have the same bits as the boys i know doesn't mean i don't have as much fun playing soldier or tromping around. of course, it means that a lot of guys find me "too aggressive" and a lot of chics find me "pushy" or "too rough," but i figure that as long as i let my interests guide me, and not my anatomy.... isn't that *always* good advice? okay, ramble off......*grin*

    grey <d_walker@ou.edu> Fri Feb 13 20:59:29 EST 1998

I'm sorry you miss Shikake, Claris. Doesn't get any easier, either. 'Least you got flowers. The one time I got roses for Valentine's day was from my best friend Tim. He sent me roses and a beautiful poem that he'd written. It was terrible, because the sidekick and I had just settled on our current arrangement, and I had to tell Tim, after he'd laid his heart out on the line. I still feel a twinge whenever I see red roses.

Well, I went looking for Someplace to Be Flying, and the bookstore here won't get it in 'til the 15th!!! Argghh. I dragged my poor sidekick all over town looking for it, too. And he had a headache, but did I care? No. So you see how ruthless I can be?

Speaking of ruthless, I still haven't found that pic of Sid, and I wanna see it! So could somebody please send me another little hint? I won't ruin it for everyone else, I promise. Please? Imagine great big Bambi eyes...

    --Grey, out girlie-ing Angel

    Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Fri Feb 13 22:59:39 EST 1998

Hmm, roses on Valentine's day...Well, one year I made an offhand remark to a good friend, who shall remain nameless, that I didn't like the day much, and had never gotten flowers. I was just being mean about the day, wasn't hinting... Now this guy was pretty transparently interested in me, but he hadn't ever done anything about it. So guess what he does? He tells Ghost about it, and Ghost, being the nice pal of a catguy that he is, gets me a flower. I mentioned it to the friend, because, after all, this was his big chance. He says he was afraid of how my parents would react. DOH?! If you ever get close to a human, and human behavior...' But let that be a lesson to you guys. Even a failed try, like Grey's friend, is better than none. Um, wow, that was really pointless... Guess I'm just psyching myself up to spend tomorrow studying by myself. :p Natter, natter. Sowwy!

    Sid <jst_clair@sprynet.com> Sat Feb 14 00:09:25 EST 1998

Grey, sent you a hint. :-) Good luck. Corva, snow art must be wonderful to see! We probably had enough to do something with last week, but the rain has now washed almost all of it away. Claris, couldn't imagine you not missing him, and I'm sure he's missing you too...have a nice Valentine's Day everybody. hehe, I got opera cremes...yum yum. Hey Van! Sid is sending you a peace offering!! hehehe.

Well, a series of them, actually, connected by a long series of colored ribbons and hidden carefully around the house. 'Carefully,' because we have 3 cats who REALLY want to know where all the neat ribbons go, and what I was doing dangling them all over if I wasn't planning to Play. Mostly storebought surprises this year (last year was handmade valentines day stuff), but cute... Carol had the good grace to be working from 11 pm to 7 am tonight, so the timing's perfect for when she gets off work. Looking forward to seeing her reaction to this one. <> Ah well. I did finally find Sid, thanks Corva, Sid, Sticks. I've been to Danceland, several times, but didn't find the link to that little alley until just now. Just took some patience--and a li'l help from my friends *g*. The side kick and I got up yesterday morning, looked at each other gravely, and said, "Happy Valentine's Day." Then we laughed our heads off. Later, we went to see "The Replacement Killers." I recommend it. Good music, good pacing, well-made movie. And I sighed quite a few sighs over Chow Yun-Fat. He's a wonderful anti-hero.

My Valentine's day, by Paper Angel

Such lovely auburn hair has he
The man of my current fancy
He slept still beside all last night
never touching me, though he might
He loves to kiss my cheek and hold my hand
Can there be another like him in the land?
Alas, yes, it seems there are more than many
that are half setter and partly Brittany

So... I nice angst-filled Valentine's to you all! ^_~ I hope everybody had a good time whether they have lovers, want them, or are happiest without them! Love you all!

    Shadesong <katrianna@mindspring.com> Sun Feb 15 19:47:36 EST 1998

I have a good man. :) For Valentine's Day, he got me an appearance in the lettercol of "Akiko", Godiva chocolates, chocolate body paint, "The Celestine Vision", and "Someplace To Be Flying". *And* he took me out to my second-favorite restaurant (my fave one was booked) and we went to see "The Wedding Singer", which we muchly enjoyed. Best V-day ever... *beam*

Angel! Yes please post the drawing! Sorry I've been AWOL, went to see _Kundun_ (like _I'd_ miss it...) it is indeed mr.Scorse's masterpiece.

Well, Chris and I planned on eating out at a nice restaurant, we ended up getting Burger King and sitting at home watching TV cause the restaurants were all booked... But he got me opera cremes, so I'm a happy person!!!

Hope everyone else had a nice day...

Blech! Valentines Day! Icky! All that sappy sentiment floating around, nothing but cheesy love songs on the radio. Except, of course, where any of those apply to Carol, who bought me a nice card and little white stuffed tiger. So all in all, my day was pretty good. --Cat

    Sid <in Hell, interviewing demons> Mon Feb 16 19:51:45 EST 1998

My sympathies. I can't stand anything with chammomile in it. I think I'm allergic to it or something...I've never had Darjeeling, though I have tried Earl Grey and wasn't impressed...I am a Lipton plain tea(refrigerator or sun brewed) person myself, although I will admit to drooling over the Stash Tea Catalog when it comes to my house.

as for the riddle, the guess by the nameless person above sounds good to me. :)

    corva <> Mon Feb 16 20:50:08 EST 1998

That nameless one was me - was just rushing about to see frozen falls! I think I will have to send Teas to everyone(or at least bring them to the BTown party)! There are few things worse than bad tea and once one has been bad tea-ed it colors ones' veiw, often making peoples think they don't like teas at all. Grey sent me a truely grand ginger tea...wanting more am I, and running out - must be findig more or paying Grey finders and shippers type fees! One of the fine folks that started Stash teas years ago has gone on and made a new company by the name of Tazo; if you can lay mits on any of their teas, they are worth nabbing!

    Sid <> Mon Feb 16 21:38:22 EST 1998

oh, yeah? I'll keep my eye out for a catalog or something...they're certainly wearing me down with the nice descriptions of their teas, though. Only problem there is every time I order something from them I end up ordering too much...

Wish I could get to the party. Closest I'm going to get to anything is a con up in Columbus this May.

    Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Mon Feb 16 22:34:49 EST 1998

No, wave isn't the answer, although it does fit... I'm very pleased that the tea I get on campus is Stash. Most impressive. ^_^ They did something right! imagine that! ;p

Didi the Poshrat <metisse@nwlink.com> Mon Feb 16 22:58:51 EST 1998

Well, it seems 'Didi' won out. And Ember got it right: I have been too happy lately for being Carabosse. I've got friends again and been invited to parties, I have my own prince, and I've lost most of my interest in cursing people. Mostly. And Grey, Chow Yun-Fat is a great HERO, nevermind anti-hero. :-) He's the bright light in his otherwise dark world (hand to forehead)... Oh, there I go goffick again. But anyway, I think he's keen. And my favorite tea of the moment: White Persian Melon. It comes loose in a large tin marked "Rare white tea enlivened with the nectar of succulent melon. Light, refreshing, and ever so exotic. A luxurious delicacy." I've found a magical place called the Teahouse Kuan-Yin...

    Sid <still interviewing demons...> Tue Feb 17 00:34:22 EST 1998

Umm, yummy. my mouth is watering. sounds really good. Okay, okay! Now I think I have to buy something from Stash's new catalog, just because of this!! ;-) not that I'm complaining too loudly, of course.

    Grey <the listening house> Tue Feb 17 12:18:05 EST 1998

Hmm...I wonder if Stash has a website...(I embrace my cybernerdy-ness!) I'll be right back.

    --Grey

    Grey <the listening house> Tue Feb 17 12:26:51 EST 1998

They most certainly do. http://www.stashtea.com , of course. You can ask to have a paper catalog sent to you, or you can order online. And they also have oodles of tea info. on their page as well. I'm now going back to revel in tea facts...BTW, Ms. Poshrat, I meant anti-hero in a good way. Anti-heroes are my favorite kind of heroes *grin*.

    --ethereally, Grey

Sid <entirely too goofy, but still interviewing demons.> Tue Feb 17 14:34:25 EST 1998

No! No, I won't go to their website. I won't order lots of tea. I won't... grin... too late... I've been caught by the tea leaf of happiness...I will buy tea I will buy tea...

    NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Tue Feb 17 17:19:42 EST 1998

My favorite tea is Oolong, which they often serve in Chinese restaraunts. It has the nicest, crispest aftertaste. They have it cold in big liter bottles down at the Japanese supermarket in Little Tokyo, but it costs five bucks a bottle. A bit steep for me at the moment. But when I get rich.... Tea for everyone!

Sid <getting back to interviewing demons after an afternoon of fooling around> Tue Feb 17 17:27:26 EST 1998

Well, I ordered some. Wanted to try their Orange Pekoe, and I ordered some of their dessert teas. Passed up all the cool exotica teas for now. Their webpage was sllooww!

Gonna do the Marie Antionette thing, NRL and say, "Let them drink tea" when you're rich? :)

    Paper Angel <wilderun@swbell.net> Tue Feb 17 18:20:34 EST 1998

Hugging NRL for the wise choice of tea!
Actually, Claris, I have to stick up for Earl Grey but add: it is very easy to get nasty varieties. I stick to purely English companies for the Grey. I generally touch not the fruity teas, fruity teas seems wrong to me 'cept lemon.

I sent a message on the mailing list, but iy hasn't returned, ignore it if you get it as I'm going to reiterate it here. Van got 'Annachie Virus' and was in a wreck this morning. He's okay but incredibly upset over it. He's pretty sore, as well. I guess I just wanted to plug for sympathy since I'm beseiged just looking at him lying listlessly in the hovel here. Thanks and I'm scanning those pics as bribes.

    paper angel <> Tue Feb 17 18:44:26 EST 1998

um... whilst looking for my bribery material I noticed my large sketchbook to be missing. It must be in Van's art room (a mysterious place that I am currently barred entrance to). This is not all that uncommon, just means Trinlay's pic will get out as it was in a sketchbook not currently in demand. Y'know... occurs to me that nobody has ever seen the elf's art... If I could just sneak in I could show you his watercolors and such.

    Sid <still going...> Tue Feb 17 18:58:07 EST 1998

ember the Ice Queen <celestne@nwlink.com> Tue Feb 17 21:47:50 EST 1998

used to hate fruit teas as well, till this summer when i spent the 4th with a friend who used celestial seasonings rapberry or somesuch (grrr...just went to check the cupboard, and found naught there....and i am one of those who sometimes shops by picture....) and made an ice tea...i was polite, took a sip....and ended up being possessive of the whole pitcher.... *shrug* just in case one should like ot not hate fruit teas......

    trinlay <trin@dias.net> Wed Feb 18 01:25:46 EST 1998

Angel! the drawing is fantastic...wish I was that adorable... I like several of the Celestial seasoning teas (Peppermint, Orange- Mango...etc) Republic of Tea has some nice ones too. (Kid's cuppa is nice) Earl Grey is available in variable quality, some of it is really horrid... and IMHO the good Earl Gray is best with milk or butter in it. but YMMV.

    NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Wed Feb 18 02:22:06 EST 1998

YMMV? Your mouth may vary? I'm about as tired as I've ever been. All those other times I said I was tired. Silly boy. I didn't know what I was talking about. Went to bed at 2:15 last night. Got up a 5:45 and didn't sleep well in between. Got up to train for a new job. Limo driver! Basically the same job I have now, only now rich people will stiff me. Start Friday. I'll let you know how it goes, and if I see anybody famous. Van. I had a rotten accident recently too. I know how these things shake you up. The idea of what could have happened is almost worse than what did, and what did is pretty bad! Let Angel hug you. She just sent me one via the ether and I highly recommend them. G'night, all.

ember, fruit teas are only to be tolerated if cold. I actually like Passion Fruit Peppermint from (of all companies) Republic of blech-- pardon, I mean Republic of Termite Dust... no...? Gah, you know. Their teas make better potpourie (sp?) than anything else.

Sid, if you ever give up the vampire trade, you could always be a Riddle Master. Claris, I'm still working on yours.

    Grey <d_walker@ou.edu> Wed Feb 18 11:17:45 EST 1998

Ethereal Grey adjusts her spectacles, checks the tilt of her tall pointed hat, clears her throat, and makes a pronouncement: hugs and kisses travel equally fast once they're released into the ether, because the "waves" out there are eternal and constant, regardless of what rides on them. But you have to put things together in the same packet if you want them to arrive together. I find it most expeditious to virtualize a nice, warm, leisurely two-arm hug accompanied by an unhurried kiss (on the cheek, if you're squeamish) and then send the whole packet out at once. Which I am now doing, thrice...

    Once for Van...

    Once for Cat...

    and Once for gNaRL...

And Cat and gNaRL, I bless you with sleep that is extraordinarily restful, however much you may get of it. There!

Hello Everyone!!! Thank you for all the wonderful get well notes...I am feeling sore but glad to be alive. The woman that I hit didn't yield to her green to make a left turn and turned right in front of me. I was going thru a green light and my lane had no one in it but me. The lane beside me was packed with morning rush hour traffic trying to get on the highway...So basically a van in the lane beside me stopped waiting for the road to clear so he could move forward. He left a space for others to turn onto the highway. I wasn't going that fast in the other lane but when she came thru I tried to stop and the road was damp so all I could do was slide into her. Come to find out she is UNINSURED and was driving a rental car. The police did not know she was uninsured because she kept saying she was in a rental. She called my house and told my significant other that she was uninsured. So now I have to let my insurance company take on the Rental company for damages since they let someone uninsured drive one of their cars....Meanwhile I have to pay for a rental car till something good happens....Sigh... That tea sounds better and better with each passing moment...

clue Claris? Van--worry not your lovely but achey head about the out come of this nasty running into and car twisting happening. My dear one, the Lurker, is a lawyer type, and he thinks that from what you have said about the incident the rental company should be forced to pick up all the damages(because it was their's and their renters mistakes)-these should include your doctoring, the car's doctoring, and the rental of an auto till yours is up and about again. He mentions that getting the moneys back often takes longer than if seems it ought to but...hang in there! The tea is on its way - but you will need to provide the water!

I saw Freedom and Necessity in the store, Min, but I held off on it. What's your opinion? Is it good? What's it like?

    ethereally, grey

    NRL <riposte@earthlink.net> Thu Feb 19 12:53:50 EST 1998

Min, I read Freedom and Nesessity about a month ago. What a slog! It had some great ideas, but I thought the telling the whole thing in letters really bogged it down and made it hard to follow. Events were talked about out of order and you had to refer back to older letters to figure out what was going on. Also I thought that although they went to great pains to have everybody talk in the idiom of the time their minds were all too modern. They felt like well read nineties college students pretending to be Victorians. In the end, it lived up to my expectations. I love Emma Bull and don't care much for Steven Brust, so I figured I'd get a book I sorta half liked, and that's what I got. Oh well. I'll just wait for Emma's next solo outing. Later, yous guys.

    Min <> Thu Feb 19 15:31:31 EST 1998

Well, I liked it, but you're right, it's slow going. The characters are very observant and very devious, and consequently I had to read every scene twice (or more) to figure out what was going on--every glance, every hand gesture has two or three meanings. There are also al lot of themes and plots going on, and my favorite, which is the existence of Faerie in this world, and by the end of the book it had been left by the way. NRL, have you ever read Bull's short story Silver and Gold in After the King (anthology of short stories in honor of Tolkien). Apparently, she's re-writing it as a novel--don't know when it will be out.

    Sid <at the library> Thu Feb 19 20:07:31 EST 1998

I'll check out your poem when I get home, Corva! I bought Freedom & Necessity, started it, but didn't get very far.. its not really high on my list of things to read right now... but I'll read it eventually... reading Wizard Fantastic, short stories now, there's some good ones there...

Hi everyone, yes tea talk! so Corva did you see my accidental mass mailing to the list of the drawing? (I'd LOVE to see the color version) Now I'm thinking of really doing something with a formerly vague project concept...anyone game? it's about PERCEPTION, I've already got a few self portraits, and a couple drawings of me by friends who I see face to face... Without using Angel's drawing as inspiration, could some of the rest of you draw me as you've imagined me... maybe when this is done I'll put them all together (with a photo or two) and make it into a book or something sharable. Though I also like the idea of a gallery wall covered with all different views of the same person.

Angel, I write every URL down I see, but I can't find my notes anywhere... sigh, to be organized...although, I sure wouldn't have anything to complain about if I was organized. Gone would be my most enduring complaints and excuses... I think I'd miss them a bit...

    Here's a short riddle I found:
You must keep it after giving it. ??

    Its rather easy, too.

    Sid

    Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Sun Feb 22 20:41:04 EST 1998

Your name? (Although, that'd be rather ironic, on the net names are fickle and mutable things...*g*)

    NRL <ripost@earthlink.net> Mon Feb 23 04:05:22 EST 1998

Your word. Wow. A riddle even I could answer. Always been terrible at the verse riddles. Just finished my first weekend of limo driving. Much less stress than the cab, although I think it's going to be less money too. Oh well, jobs are like that, huh? Working hard on a bunch of new writing projects. No prose though. Not for a while. Every year for the past three years, my new years resolution has been to write a fantasy novel, but the damn screenplays eat time like fire eats paper. One of these days I'm going to have to go back home or up to Alaska or somewhere away from the "You've got to write this script NOW!!!! while the window of opportunity is open" LA vibe for two months or three and just knock it out. It's in my head. I just need the time!!! He says as he goes off and watches stupid tv for three hours. Hypocrite. G'night all!

I'm noticing an inverse proportion between the amount of time I spend at work and the amount of writing I get done. It seems odd, since I still spend plenty of time at home, but I think work is eating up all my capacity to think. Or, the evil spirits of Lawton are draining my creativity for their own nefarious purposes. Not sure which. Was sick last week, but that's gone now-- thanks to all those who sent energy, warm thoughts, and ethereal hugs & kisses!
Mab's blessing on everyone, may you all stay healthy, strong, and lucky!

argh! i am having a morning! sigh.....knew i should never have remembered the bb url to look at while working....the Man doesn't appreciate doing self stuff on govt time..... walking down drive, dressed for work (read: girl clothes, stupid girl shoes w/no traction) slipped on rain slick pavement. tore up a brand new pair of tights (and for poor ember, that is very much too expensive to just dismiss) and tore up the poor left knee underneath. and was then late to pick up carpool (lucky he loves me) blah blah blah.....been up 3-1/2 hours and each minute has been a little adventure. am reminding myself that laughing is better than other reactions.....and am being very 3-year-old happy like about the bright neon bandaids showing from under my black tights today :-P only ones in the apt and i am glad. cause now the suits can add another thing to their "reasons we know she's not like us" okay okay.....gotta return to the blah of grind.......hope all else having better time and miss corva, if you call me on thrus or fri and it is 1900-2200, i will be at rehearsals, so call either 1700-1845 or after 2200 or leave number with roommate that i can call ya at

corva: good omen that this time you saw the NaRL one? maybe we will figure out a way? and i did survive my day. did something i never do. friend i carpool with called i the afternoon and said "take a late lunch with me and don't go back" and i thought about it. and wondered which i would rather remember having done when i am old and grey. and realized that work was eating me. and left. felt weird. a bit guilty....but am now over the bizarre cascade of funk that hit me from the moment i awoke until i left the office. weird events seem to be over. *bliss* angel: oooooclear and water-tight? just normal ol' bandaids? i go through phases. the "i'll just be a man and ignore it" phase where i don't use any bandaid and just bleed until i scab. the "fine but i don't want to have to tell everyone what happened *this time*" phase, where the clear would be nice. and the infamous "look! a tiny cut! an excuse to put some eye-catching obnoxious bandaid on and flaunt my non-corporate-ness!" phase. of course, the latter phase always seems to coincide with important meetings....*snicker* which i guess is no worse than the friday i had a surprise meeting but took advantage of "casual day" to dig out my one gaudy tyedye t-shirt (annachie, does that scare ya?) that doesn't match all the black they associate with me....i love peoples faces when they're in shock. *grin* gotta go feed and rehearse. so i'll shut up for the night. hope all have lovely evenings!

Cat, know what you mean, work sure doesn't foster creativity... they wouldn't let me put little skulls and crossbones on the magazine labels today... or happy faces, either. *pout* Thought I'd liven it up and everyone thinks I'm joking... *grin*
Ember, I hate it when that happens... but nice neon bandaids sure do liven things up...

Well, last few jobs I've had, cut fingers seem to be the occupational hazard du 'jour =) So here I am with several boxes of bandaids between home and my desk drawer. .. including Sanrio ones with Picke Bicke or Batdz Maru & co on them, got some clear ones (all that shows is the cotton pad.. and does ANYONE on the planet match that "skin tone"? ), and neon ones... and Disney ones. "you can always spot the parents, cartoon bandaids were the only ones in the house, eh?" (My kid is almost 11, I get the sanrio ones for me, and the disney ones are left overs from when she thought they were cool...)

ember the Ice Queen <celestne@nwlink.com> Thu Feb 26 08:12:54 EST 1998

well, before the day was over, i had been stupid and acquired yet another bandaid.....*grin* but it just meant yet another colour i could slap on the ol' pasty skin. sid:my attempts to liven things up have caused nothing but reprimands. but, as the youngest in the office (govt offices usually are comprised of a bunch of people in their late 40's or older and one secretary who is younger and gets treated stupid, no matter how brillint she is), their are a handful who've decided that i'm adorable (ick) so it's not too bad. and in order to get back at fate for destroying my new tights, i wore them to rehearsal, with a skirt. my thought being "these are new tights and i am darn well going to wear them!" plus, they showed my bandaids off perfectly. and am rehearsing a play for a festival thing up here. only tech this time. but i figure it's gotta be done, and gets my face more known for when i absolutely must have the spotlight. (dang it, i can't make this thing make paragraphs,.....am i just too tired of late? grrrr) anyhow, trinlay: cool bandaids are for kids and people who still have a chance in life :-P that's what i always tell them. (though i am currently in love with bandaids that have glow in the dark stars or casper or with sparkly silver ones......) and, mr. annachie: i don't think there's a picture of me in my nice alarming tyedye. so you must have seen it first hand. *grin* yep. i'm scary. (and which scares you more: the shirt or the fact that i have nail polish to match my neon bandaids?) gonna run off and get ready for work. (little extra time cause carpool friend is on a trip) hope all have a smashing day. someone *pleas* remind me how to make this let me have paragraphs! i ramble too much to do without!

Harry turned to his agent. "See that?" he said.
    She looked out the window.
"Raymond is telling his friends that the fireflies are the Ember People," Harry said. Harry felt very tired.
Helen put her hand on Harry's shoulder and said, "Every time a boy and girl exchange their first breathless kiss, an Ember child comes into being in a burst of light."
"Yep," Harry said. "The Ember People. It is in their interest , as a race, to encourage human love. A whole tribe of cupids. In the origional story, their fate was just a little different. An Ember child would burst into flame when a human boy and girl kissed for the first time. Human passion murdered the Ember folk. Quite a different perspective, wouldn't you say?"

The thing I hate about shared housing is that if my roommates want to have a drunken bacchanal and invite my ex-fiance and his wench to the party, my options are to sit here and suffer it, or be kicked out of my house for the duration of the party. I just thought I'd mope at people who might offer me sympathy. Here, all I get is lectures on why I ought to play nice with hypocritical and treacherous heartbreakers. :-(
(Testing that line-break thing) Other than that, my life is happily quiet. And the Teahouse Kuan Yin has this amazing tea called Wu-Wei that is very nice. Just the thing with which to drown my sorrows.

    Cat <Cat@sonetcom.com> Wed Mar 4 03:06:13 EST 1998

'Play nice?' Piffle! Though, I do think living well is the best revenge. IMHO, anyone who qualifies as a hypocritical and treacherous heartbreaker isn't worth the time spent radiating malice at them. Of course, there *are* times when that's easier said than done...
Trying the line-break thing myself... Nephews! woohoo! Congratulations!
Annachie, I've been meaning to ask you this for ages: where *does* yer name come from?

    trinlay & Sakya Pandita Panghp <trin@dias.net> Wed Mar 4 08:19:39 EST 1998

I've been musing about doing a wee book project (Microscopic fine art press =) and I'd come across an old email from a friend with a gob of quotes from Sakya Pandita Panghspa, a Tibetan Lama who almost single handedly conquered the Mongols via befriending Kubalai Khan. "If you wish to harm an enemy, possess yourself of virtue, for it will burn in your enemy's thoughts (and increase your merit.)" Or even "Gentleness conquers the gentle, Gentleness conquers the fierce gentleness accomplishes everything gentleness is sharpness the wise ones say." now I gotta get dressed and go to work. tk

    paper angel <> Wed Mar 4 08:34:23 EST 1998

didi, you talking about racine? the person has never been polite to me or my cohorts. in fact, you and ember seem to be the only people associated with seattle that encourage any warm feelings for that part of the world. you deserve much better treatment.

(groggily pulling out the dusty soap box)
it is my opinion (open to debate...) that associates who invite 'uncomfortable feelings' people over and expect one to be 'okay' with it are simply associates and not friends. especially if they throw a party without consideration of how you feel about a party in the first place. didi, i like you, and i'm going to hen at you on this. you don't need friends like that. nobody does.

    angel <wilderun@swbell.net> Wed Mar 4 08:38:35 EST 1998

ember the Ice Queen <on the warpath> Wed Mar 4 10:49:17 EST 1998

my dearest didi: though you have heard my thoughts before, here i go again. your roommates are pigs. and i once again offer to beat them into tiny bits of flesh and bone for you. you pay rent. you live there. put on the attitude. remind them that they don't rent the whole house and can stay in their part. cause as much as that evil ex (yes, angel, the one you think it is) has been like a brother sometimes, your roommates have no right to have people over that you have let them know you are very uncomfortable with. in fact, a roommate of mine doing that would be grounds for murderous acts. seriously, those two losers are not real friends (not half the cool friend *i* am!) and you need to hurry and live where they are not!
hey angel, wanna help me mount a war party?

    Corva <crownest@pobox.alaska.net> Wed Mar 4 13:13:11 EST 1998

DiDi-nastynasty roommatey types got cars that need er, um, additions to their paint jobs? The flock sides up next to you and nods with understanding. Drink your tea lady and many friendly cups will raised to you. Such home sharing is never an easy; that is most likely why so many familes get so very sick of each other and then years later, recall they care about each other...years and miles later usually... Sid-page is cool but beyound my knowlege is the how of all that. Angel-bonk head with open hand, i do. Congrats to Embershine! Having the new life about to help celebrate the spring! It really was spring down there. Your city gave me a pleasent rainings coolish welcome. The crows looked tiny and delicate after all the big ole raven types up here. Hope to hear from you more and catch you when next i get through your neck of the northwestwoods. How many of us are mulling over the travels to the Rave? Sticks-thank you for the Story People, gave me smiles...and er, picture?...maybeyes? thankthankthankYOU!

    Corva <> Wed Mar 4 14:08:10 EST 1998

oh, stuff about local corvids...the odd golden brown raven, that this one was ranting on about months ago, finally lost its camera shyness and made it into the paper. Not my photos but a comely shot none the less. Was good to see him there anyhow; there were a few folks that thought I had let my imagination fly away with me until they saw him for themselves! And sadly....Angel, the power lines took one out too. I so do wish They would think about the wing span of the local birds when they put those things in the flight paths! was a nasty scene I'm afraid and nothing to be done for the feathered one...Tea water tea for the way of things sometimes

    Annachie <annachie@babelon.com> Wed Mar 4 20:29:08 EST 1998

Cat>> My name was taken from a old Celtic song called Annachie Gordon. Loreena McKennitt did a wonderful job of redoing the song if you are interested. Ember's brother and I share the same name IRL, so I'm waiting for him to name a son 'after me'.

I've got a new e-mail address. Both my brothers wanted e-mail addresses, and the best way to accomidate the situation was to aquire an Identity Pack at netcom. I now have seven e-mail addresses, 30mb of disk space, and my own domain name, all for less than what I was paying for the standard service (my brothers also got a price break too). I still have my other addy and it will forward any messages, but I'll be using this one from now on.

Angel, you rule breaker, you! *grin* wow, everybody jumps on when I'm not here!! Corva! Welcome back(I presume you are back?) Didi, sympathies. Annachie, that's one of my favorite songs, btw. That and umm, the other one on that CD, what's it called? my mind is blank. The one about the guy dying and the girl seeing him... on the moors... darn it, blank mind still.

    trinlay <trin@dias.net> Thu Mar 5 09:08:49 EST 1998

wow bummer...(party thing with ex...) I think I missed a big chunk of the story. I thought it was like a local friend of mine's house where there are certain ANNUAL parties, (people who live there know the schedual and all participate, if they want to...) and the ex simply presumed he was invited. If it was "let's have a party" and a house member protested... that's not good to have the party then, and worse to invite someone that she's decided not to associate with. In my limited experience though (did I post the customer from hell bit on the mailing list last night?) it does no good to run away from annoying/"feel bad" people when thrown into social situations. Every time I've done that things turn around to that person's favor. (ie: in one case of my own, I was read the "riot act" for being hostile to a "guest" when I'd merely desired to make myself scarce... ) I was really really careful yesterday to let my anger dissapate so I could show the customer-from-hell who verbally assaulted me last week, who I really am. (a human being! that's what I am... handle with care...) I didn't have the option of taking that part of the day off, or dissapearing so I wouldn't have to see her. (and I've gotten a sense that there is something much more vital in my prayers for her mental health. )

annachie: while this may be the only baby *they* can have, one of the rest of us is bound to name a baby after you, as we are quite fond of the name.....and i will make note of new email address....though you never respond *sigh* i am sooooo forsaken *gothic hand to forehead swoon*

angel: yes, covert is a rush. we need to create our own company so we needn't be covert....and i think you should come here and help me stop the party....i have a feeling we would be a scary combination......*grin*

oh and sid, of course we'r ehere when *you* aren't....just think about it....*smug grin* (you know you love me!!!) and i know the loreena song you mean.....can't remember the title either......but most her stuff is just great and sad and ethereal......

Sid>> Do you mean 'Standing Stones' on the Parallel Dreams album?

    Cat <Cat@sonetcom.com> Thu Mar 5 19:08:29 EST 1998

Wow! Trying to catch up on email and everything else. All things wild at work-- wish I could get on here from there, but it's probably a good thing that I can't. Too much to do there, too little time to do it, but it "has to be done." Sheesh. Personally, I'm not sure I see the economic advantage in having a bunch of stressed out, strung out, burned out employees-- but at least their basic unwillingness to pay overtime means I do get to have days off, still.
Also, I don't seem to be on the mailing list anymore... Claris (or somebody) can you check on that? I haven't gotten b-town email in weeks, and I'm going into withdrawal. You know, fingers shaking, muscle tics, wild & wide-eyed stare... Oh, wait, that's normal. Anyhow, someone *please* tell me how to get back onto the list!
Thanks, & Mab's Blessings on everyone,
    --Cat

i think i've changed my mind. i don't want to be a librarian anymore. i'll just skip comps tomorrow and stay in bed. No, I have a better idea. I'll come in and take comps and say exactly what I think. I'll be brilliantly mad! Yes! (Grey screams dramatically and staggers off, chanting, "NISO, ANSI, MARC, FOIA. NISO, ANSI, MARC, FOIA...")

    Corva <> Thu Mar 5 20:17:37 EST 1998

er, grey, nice grey good grey(said in soothing tones)um, what can we do to make it better? Sounds to this one like lotsa craziness goin' round and round. Has not made it up here yet, maybe alaska is out of range? Hang in there all! Spring is springing down there, no? Cat-it has been very quiet for all the list, needing a jump start perhaps. Ember-legos?!? and wooden blocks too? Wheeeee!!!!! Annachie, perhaps you ought warn the single gals what your song tells of...The Bear is learing about guessing games right now, think a youngish version of Twenty Questions, and very gleeful. Back to him now - better things to come for all, am i wishing!

    Sid <> Thu Mar 5 21:38:57 EST 1998

Yes, Annachie, that's it. Thanks! Grey, lots of luck. Really. Hope everything goes well. Ember, what kind of legos do you have? I have some of the castle series... Cat, hope you get back on! Trinlay, I know what you mean about those customers... We get them all the time. But ours never come back and apologize.

    trin <trin@dias.net> Thu Mar 5 23:25:03 EST 1998

well, she still didn't exactly applogize, but she DID bring munchies... =) and was actually NICE to the person who got her on the phone today. (gasp! maybe this prayer stuff DOES work.) ;) better be careful, someone might decide I'm a witch...even though I'm heavier than a duck.

    Paper Angel <wilderun@swbell.net> Fri Mar 6 00:10:17 EST 1998

I have fifteen minutes so I will try to pack a ton of info in as I can. Trin, while it is good to be civil, sometimes it is not appropriate. My example being: last Sat. when I really should have been studying, I went to a LARP (live-action role-playing). At this LARP was somebody I knew to be a convicted child molester. Nobody else knew this. I could not be nice, I could not allow myself to create a scene, either. He chased me down as he knew me and was all happy-smiles. I could not be nice and I was so angry I was near tears because I could not beat him up on the spot. I *knew* I couldn't do anything. I wanted to leave, then I saw there were two kids there. So, I had to just look him in the eyes and say "Stay away from me." Then I stayed with the kids. The point is: he was being 'nice' and if I was nice back it would have been a bad situation. Some dead-beats (child molesters or alcoholics or liars) will be nice to get in your space, the only way to defeat that is to tell them to get away or avoid them.

(sliding the soap box out for anybody else's use)

I hope to be able to handle stuff on the mailing list soon, I just haven't had time. Also, Claris? Could you pleeeez send me the specifics on subscribing so I can get NRL hooked up, he has little info and I thought I might be able to do it for him by sending him a form and just having him delete a symbol here and there before he sends it out again. I have more to talk about but I'm a minute past time. Haere ra.
