Rayne, I suppose you can never say that too much? >grin< Van, I haven't drawn Chrysaniella yet, cuz I find her too enviable. All the B'Town you and I know has pictures of her the rest have Zavin. Gotta sleep, but not before I yell Tennekoe at Techwolf! Hey, friend, longtime! Missing ghost, NRL, Carrabosse, and others. Terrible how you've grown on me, can't forgive you that. (smiling a rare smile)
I just checked and the MUSH is back up. Cross you fingers the gremlins don't strike again.
So what am I up to in my B-town neighborhood? Hmm...the new story will show a move from Laura and Koga's old dojo into a new one above a Chinese tea house run by Chang Cheng. They now share their space with Master Yin, an elderly Chinese martial artist. After twenty years of doing a hard style, (Shotokan karate) I am working out now doing Shaolin. The soft style is interesting and the weapons ain't half bad. Besides, I don't see too many Shotokan grandmothers, but in Shaolin I work beside a 70 year old woman whose double swords weigh more than she does but boy is she way cool. So as you mush, mush me a new martial arts center... something else...I always thought Bordertown needed street theatre. An acting troupe somewhere between the italian commedia dell'arte and the San Fransico Mime troupe..acrobatic, bawdy, and making, in it's own crazy way, comments on the whole Btown scene. A Bordertown Arlecchino in a half mask...so any actors out there? street performers? improvisors? mask makers? Ciao ragazzi
Thanks for the repeat performance, Midori! Glad to hear about Koga and Laura. I love asian culture, bonus to have it rampant in B'Town. Techwolf, I'd almost hug you! Tennekoe is 'greetings' in Maori, Maori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. I always thought B'Town was missing a Polynesian aspect so I'm trying to make up for it! (Angel walks to Techwolf and presses her nose to his) This is a hungi (hung-e) it is for good friends, relatives, and future friends. Written Maori is usually easy to pronounce, just pronounce every vowel. My real middle name is Ngaire (Ny-re), a Maori name. Pakeha means 'foreigner'. Missionaries tried to christianise the Maoris, and in an attempt to conduct Communion correctly, the Maoris used human blood and flesh. Talk about a misundertanding... Imagine the missionaries' faces when they were served *that* communion wafer! I have an active imagination and visualise the scene constantly, doesn't help to remember a little record my mother used to play for me called 'Puha and Pakeha'. Sung by Maori singers, its about some Maoris who throw and Englishman into a pot. Still hear 'I say, you know I'm from Harvard, old chap?' 'Ah we ain't picky, boy.' Know trad. songs my mother taught me, too. I'm rambling... I miss not having anyone to talk to about this stuff. Everybody thought I made up gibberish at work cuz I'd sing 'E pa pa waiare takume' or 'Po kerikeri ana' <--mom taught me the school kid version of that one. Ah, well, enough reminiscing! I'll try to see everyone later on a mush or something, and of course, right here.
First, I'll be archiving another bunch of messages in the very near future. Just a heads up.
Second, I've recieved a letter from Terri Windling. It talks about:
Help Nathan!! My computer won't connect to the address you gave for the letter (even when typed with 3 w's instead of 4) and I really want to see a copy of this letter! Any ideas?
That's cause I posted that message before the html file was actually there. Typo will be fixed in just a moment.
Ok, it all works now.
For those of you having problems seeing this letter, you might click here
This should work, as I've seen the letter myself.. and on that note, I've got only one thing to say:
WE DID IT!! YAHOO!! TEE HEE!!!! <
Provided Ms. Windling's guidelines are abided by, I'll provide a web home for whatever y'all want up on the web.
Oh, and before I forget: THANK YOU!!! Thank you, Nathan, thank you Ms. Windling, THANK YOU EVERYBODY!!! (And if anyone tries to take my caffiene away I will kill them!! :)
YES!!!!!!!THE RIGHT TO WRITE B-TOWN FAN FICTION IS OURS!!!!!!!!! *Rayne fills all the cups and glasses in Claris' house full of wine and draft beer* We MUST have YET another party! Alright!!!!!!!!
Hey...don't you *just love it* when an author you love turns out to be as cool as you imagined she'd be? *^_^* Anyway, there'll definitely be a martial arts center on the MUSH. Probably my kwoon, but somebody could build Koga Sensei's place sometime too. So it'll be gung fu (Shaolin practictioners welcome!!! [Well, hey, it was worth a try!]). I'm just thrilled everything's working out so well.
Rayne, hang on! New Year starts Friday, we'll have a *big* one. (Maybe even on the MUSH???) And here...I don't drink, but someone gave me all this sake'...wanna do something with it? ;-)
All right, see you all again! And hopefully, in realtime...
HURRAY!! I am so happy for all of the writers in the town! Now I will actually get to see some creative works that all of you seem to have bottled up inside! Midori, it sounds like you are busy! I used to goto a jujitsu instructor. The teaching was really helpful and soothing. That is funny about the 70 year old woman! I could see an actual troupe of performers of all kinds in B-town something like a Festival! Well Angel, you talk to me about the Maori culture and I listen. My two pointy ears have not let me down yet as far as hearing what you have to say! I love to learn about other worlds. Van tastes the wine that Rayne offers...He prays that it's not a cheap red. Glup.
YAY! We can write fan-fic!!! By the way, does anyone have/want a compendium of Bordertown? Like that Star Wars universe book, that tracks all the characters, places, and so on. This would be important for us as writers to make sure that we don't contradict each other too much. Besides, I want the specs on the B-Town Goth club (hint, hint). The reason I say 'have/want' is because I may write my own just for my own uses, but if someone else has done it, then that saves me the trouble...
Quick question: I know the letter says we can't use characters without expressly
written permission, but we can use the "world." Does that mean we can use
landmarks from B-town in our stories? Such as raving at Danceland, buying a book
at Elsewhere, etc? Nathan, as far as a fan-fiction page goes, I've already
got a site I was planning on using long ago, I was just waiting for the go-ahead..
Maybe you could put a link from your fan-fiction page to mine or maybe have mine as a mirror
or backup? You've already done so much for us here that I hate to put a strain on you like that..
Anyways.. I have a website for Border stuff, Hopefully I'll have my first fanfics up there shortly,
and I guess if anyone else wants stuff there, let me know..
TW
Sreaming at the top of my lungs: YEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!!! I'm not the suck-up type, but I'll make one little exception! Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you, Terri Windling! And a great BIG thanks goes out to Nathan, too! What ever would we have done without YOU to make a place to bring us together. I just hope that more Townies discover the 'net and come in! (On a more serious note) I promise not to take away your cafeine, Techie. A good thing, too,>grin< I'd hate to make you lose face when you tried to do me in... Your manna would suffer for it... (Sips a little wine) Thanks Rayne, not bad, much better than that awful elven swill of Van's.
Well, I disappear for a while and you all go legit on me. What's an iconoclast to do? Actually This is great! Now there's no more need to sneak or sculk or cover our asses six ways to sunday. Now that that's taken care of, anybody that wants to have a peek at my Bordertwon story, please e-mail me at the above address and I'll send it along post haste. I'm sorry I've been absent more than usual lately, this is partly from a stuborn shyness about getting into the roleplaying and partly from really annoying technical problems. For some reason I can no longer post from AOL and Earthlink, my other server, has a fifteen minute cut off if you're not moving around on the net, so I'd get halfway into some wild ramble of a message and the damn thing would hang up on me, causing me to lose the deathless prose. Incredibly frustrating! But hopefully I've found a solution. It's awkward and and round about, but it just might work. I go on-line, read the board, go back off line, write the message, then go back on line, cut and paste it into the message box and viola, you read it. Only six easy steps instead of one! .... I am slowly figuring out who I am and where I live in Bordertown, but for now, that figure in the black leather jacket you see in the distance whizzing by on a beat up old Schwinn beach cruiser with a handle-bar basket full of notebooks, sketchbooks and plain old book books. That's me. No motor bikes for me. Simple machines that run, spell box or no spell box. That's the way to go. Anyway, when I've got all the rest worked out, I'll stop by the loft and say hi.... Thank you, Terri. It's great to be given the go ahead. Thank you, Nathan. Your efforts are appreciated by all of us. Midori, thanks for coming to visit, hope to see you here often. Angel, if I wasn't gone, how could you miss me? Claris, Gong Hay Fat Choy, if that's really what I mean to say. G'night, all.
**Shadesong pokes her tousled head out from her pile of quilts... blinks several times... figures out what the celebration is all about...** Woohoo! I think having a B-Town concordance is a good idea, to avoid contradiction... and I'm looking forward to reading everyone's fanfic! And TechWolf, it's good to see another Ranma fan! :)
(Hangin' upside down from the loft, TLO figures out what's happening and lets out an earsplitting shriek of joy) COOL! Coolness. :)(: Yo Claris -- toss that sake up here, willya? THat's about the only concession I make to alcohol -- most other stuff is kinda bitter for me. Anyone for a night on the town to help celebrate the Chinese New Year?? I am -- I'm going to a party up on the Tooth with a friend or two('Twasn't my idea to be dragged up there, but oh well, it's an excuse to pull out my emerald chinese outfit) but I doubt I'll spend the entire night there, so.... anyone for some fun?
(Angel grins at TechWolf) I'll say it, better stop me fast. I mean it. It's early and I'm feeling mischief calling...
Don't you dare.. because then I'll have to explain all over again.. I'm already tired and frustrated enough as it is..
I wouldn't, not when you are already tired and frustrated. You are my friend... (smiles coming more readily) I have few and I don't want to jeopardise them.
Angel, Wolf, what are you guys on about?
*Rayne is just kinda bored. She needs something to do. She walks over to the LARGE sound system everyone has fixed up, pops in her Ravi Shankar "3 Ragas" on the turntable. She grabs Claris by the hands and starts to groove* ~~~Sorry this doesn't really have to do with anything~~~
NRL, nothing you need to be concerned about.. Just Angel giving me a hard time.. ;)
TW
Oh, it's a pre-party party, is it? I can go for that, I desperately need a break. TLO: Catch! And Rayne... Turn it up!
(PS: Hey, I like Ranma too! [Though Mousse is cuter! ^_^])
ok, i know everyone else has said it, but .... YAAAAAAAAAY!!!!! *grin*
this is the best! thank you all for caring about these books enough that the authors allow us to (pretty much) do as we please with it! and thank you Nathan for going above and beyond the call of duty for us... we owe you man... if you ever need anything......
i can't wait to read all the Bordertown stories that you all have written... i just finished a Mercedes Lackey novel, and need something to read, so sendsendsend...*grin*
Re: the theatre... THAT was weird.. i was thinking along the same lines, except it was a repertory company... i figured that movies wouldn't work, so plays had to be alot bigger than in the rest of the world... what do you think?
I'll be altering the art that i have done in order to adhere to the guidelines... (again, THANK YOU!) and posting links as soon as i can... i haven't been online too much in the past week, (sorry angel, i WILL get your pix up soon) but hopefully, this weekend i will have some time...
one thought, in addition to the Bordertown "bible" (the who's who) we should add a small description of the person, and also ourselves, along with a small description.
also, i'd like to read any "autobiography" stories about all of your B'Town personas... i'm working on mine now *grin*
HEY, i'd like to say that it is nice to see so many non-drinkers here too... (me: sober for 6 years) congrats to you all....
well, that's all i can think of right now (of course, as soon as i post this, I'll think of something else!*grin*) so....
peace!!
**Shadesong joins the pre-party party** Claris: Mousse is probably my favorite male character in the series! I still want to dress up as Shampoo for Halloween.... Stickman: which Lackey novel? I love her work...
Stickman: absolutely, I agree with you about the poverty of movies in Bordertown. Too much killer technology needed to run the newer movies with all their elaborate sound...still though, something small in the nature of old reel to reel, black and white which would require a lot less and at the same time have the dreamy distance that might appeal to a B-town audience..for instance, Cocteau's "Belle e Bete" or Kurosawa's early work, "Yojimbo" and "Sanjuro."...jeez, what about early Toho films..."Godzilla"? Don't you think a B-town audience would appreciate the big lug in a unique sort of way? As to theatre I think of the commedia dell'arte, because the troupes were small, often broke so used a makeshift stage, and very few props, relied exclusively on their wits, their brauva on stage and their knowledge of local gossip to make the improvised plays come alive for the audience. They stuck to everybody's favorite topics, food, sex and violence, and always made fun of authority figures. Corwyn of Aldon House might well appreciate that he is feared on the street and hated...but oh, he would not like being satirized by an intelligent comic and have the same audience that feared him, laugh at him. Stickman if you are interested in pursuing this line a bit, post me a note via the Bulletin and I will gladly give you a few titles of wonderful and very readable books on the commedia. They should be available in a good public library or better yet, in a university library if you have access to one. Ciao ragazzi
Ok, I've sent off a query about places.
TW, I certainly don't have the time to actively maintain a fiction page, but I do want to keep all this Bordertown stuff available. I do have more faith in player.org/apocalypse.org's connectivity then Geocities. Let's talk about this in a few days.
Re: A Concordance: How about anyone who has an entry for a concordance/index, email it to me, and I'll complile the entries. Should be able to excessively crosslink everything and make it searchable.

Nathan, arigato.. :)
And as far as Ranma goes, I do a pretty good Ryoga m'self, if I try.. But I
have to agree, I like Ryoga and Mousse best, for their undying devotion to thier
chosen females.. (I was like Mousse and spent 6 years pursuing a girl I liked before I gave up..)
Personally, I can't really say any of 'em's really cute, per se.. but I'll
say this much: Just give me Ukyou, Shampoo, or Akane, and I can die a happy man! ;)

ACK!!! <
TW
So how about we start an online B-Town commedia troupe? I'll join! :) About Ranma... I absolutely fell in love with Mousse after watching the movies. :) I adore Ryoga, too.... tho there really isn't a character I don't like! :)
In the B'Town game I run we have Godzilla at the Lantern as well as many classics with the old stars like Bogey, Garbo, Flynn. Godzilla is pretty popular in the game, so the Magic Lantern does well on those nights. I find it funny to imagine the theatre crowded with the dregs of town as well as the slumming Hill denizens. Street theatre would be an awesome idea! The new game I'm setting up will have to bear that in mind. Midori? Long Lankin is an old folk song, right? But, being called Corwin of Aldon, who does this character belong to? He is a major nemesis in my games (my players have rarely seen him, to keep the mystery and power) and I'm curious if I can find more about him? Like; what did he want with those babies!?! Freak-boy! Concerning anime, RG Veda, Heroic Legend of Arislan, and Record of Lodoss war are my big favorites. Battle Angel is my favorite sci-fi anime of all. Van loves Mousse. I liked the kid with the power of illusion from one of the movies. ...Oh, and Techie, I *like* tomatos. S'go ahead. (Seeing NRL, Angel nods and walks over to him and presses her nose to his) Don't be a pakeha. (She leans back and passes him some of Rayne's wine.) TLO, becareful up there, we know the ditty about Humpty Dumpty, don't we? I don't think the blankets and quilts are below you. Shadesong, you might have a case of scrambled townie if TLO makes a wrong move.
Hmmmm...Movies in a land of unpredictable magic. Remember what happened in the foothills and that was just electric guitar. I'd hate to be in the audience watching Godzilla the night a strong wind blew out of the nevernever. Ouch! Now theatre...thats another story. I imagine that it would be huge. With marionette shows for the cubs and serious high brow for the denizens of the hill. Cool. Oh, and thanks for all the hard work making in us legal Nathan.
Corwyn of Aldon House is a highborn elf across the boarder. He is also a bigot, cold as ice and very unpleasant. He is the absolute opposite of Farrel Din. It would be wrong though to call him "evil" because he is really part of the old faery world and should be considered more a predator of humans (as he deems his right--part of the old culture of faery that "died its cap red in the blood of humans" to supprot their hunts, their divination and their magic. It is part of the curious interrelationship between the old faery and humans... needing humands to survive and distainful of that need at the same time. I kept Corwyn fairly obtuse...he is the stuff of the other side, cold and impenetrable, he is something to be feared. (there is I will add a good bit more to him in the upcoming story). He got his street name of Long Lankin from the folk song about the strange knight who comes to a castle and through magic seduces the maid to open the doors and let him in. He then spells the women to bring a baby and they "prick him till the red blood runs into a bowl".. He isn't a vampire...he doesn't want the blood for his own sustenance, but the workings of his magic. Long Lankin is how humans see him... the fearful knight, but to himself he is a high born, noble, pure and he finds obscene the new detente between humans and faery. ButI have given him a weakness in the new story...
Paper Angel: oy....sorry about the typos in that last post. I realize that I did not answer your question directly. Corwyn of Aldon House, alias Long Lankin, is one of my characters.
Paper Angel: oy....sorry about the typos in that last post. I realize that I did not answer your question directly. Corwyn of Aldon House, alias Long Lankin, is one of my characters.
(TLO juggles the bottle before getting a secure grip on it) Thanks Claris! I don't normally drink, but this is a special occasion (Did I spell that right?) so... And don't worry, Angel, you won't have scrambled townie -- I'm good at this monkey business. :) Puppetry? Oo... that always reminds me of the wajang kulit - shadow puppets of Indonesia. They're flat stylized figures made out of leather and mounted on sticks behind a backlit curtain. The plays usually lasted all night -- they were epics, but in B-town they'd be shorter, I guess. Perchance that'd be a good street occupation to have...
(Carabosse joins Rayne and Claris in dancing, pausing only briefly once the ragas are over.) "Hey, guys, you gotta hear this. S'called bhangra... Hip-hop/rave/ska/raga mixes. Ah, less explaining and more dancing!" (And then launches into a lot of arm-waving and hip-sway that looks as though it's meant to be Indian. Until the Spanish-Gypsy skirt-tossing.) "Y'know, we need to have an Eastern night at the Atchin' Tan one of these days..." (The Atchin' Tan is a cafe in the lower level of a large Victorian house and it's primarily noted for it's extremely liberal entrance policies. Since it's Carabosse's house, and she's a halfie, it makes sense. House/cafe floor plan available.)
Shade: here, here!! I love all of ranma, but then again, I love most of Takahashi's work
anyways.. I'm just a huge anime fan, otaku lovin' fanboy.. :)
Angel: Fine then... kumquats will have to do. :) And the person you're referring to
is Toma, Prince of the floating island, Togenkyou. That was from Ranma 1/2 the move 2: Nihao My Concubine.
:) Godzilla would be excellent at the Lantern, but I don't wanna think what would
happen if what's his name couldn't get the faery dust mix just right.. ;)
Any and All: First off, street theatre is an excellent idea! As an out of work-actor
type, I can completely hold with that.. So maybe y'all will see me hittin' the
road out there trying to make y'all laugh, or maybe doing a scene from Damn Yankees..
((TechWolf goes over to the Hi-Fi, mutters something about "my turn.." and puts on
a cd called "Music for the Jilted Generation" by a guy calling himself the Prodigy..
As the highly electric, bass-heavy music fills the room, throbbing and pulsing,
you see TW hit the center of the room and just start moving to the sound in whatever
way suits him for the moment, adding things from Modern Tap dance, Irish Jigs,
anything that he feels in the rhythm.. After the cd ends, he goes over to the hi-fi,
turns off the music, and returns to his usual silent place in the corner. ))
Aish..sorry all about the double posting. Hit the key twice I guess. I does make me look rather *possessive* about my character. Speaking of puppets don't forget Bunraku! Can you imagine the quirky sort of friendship that might develop between three people working the same puppet? I saw a puppeteer who wore the stage wrapped around his body and back, both hands were puppets and even his head was a character...very strange and lovely. A great street occupation.
Thanks for archiving, Nathan. Hopefully it won't crash Mac-Netscape anymore! ^_^
Lackey fans: Do you know about the mailing list? It's a lot of fun. I think you can find a link to it under My Place or Freezone at my page. I've been on it for over a year now, and it's quite cool.
Puppets! I got to see a grandmaster puppeteer from China last year. It was soooooo incredible. The tiger puppet fought the monk puppet, the tiger SWALLOWED the monk, the monk crawled back out...Amazing. I do believe Claris is going to go wander Dragontown til she finds a puppetry-sifu!
Since there's been archiving, I'm reposting the link to AnimeMUSH. It's great to see so many anime fans... We REALLY need you to at least make an appearance and create your character, so that we can prove we've got the people to build a detailed Bordertown. Please??? ^_-
Prodigy! Cool...
(Wow, look, it's Midori again! I think I'm going to pass out...is this mondo spiff or what?!) ^_^;;
Happy year of the Ox!!! }8)
Midori, for your gratification, and my embarrassment, I direct your attention to my e-mail addy. I have always loved villains, I remember seeing Star Wars for the 1st time (I was fouryears old) and my favorite char.s were the Storm Troopers. Empire came out and I fell for Boba Fett, I'm happy to hear he didn't die in the Sarlacc's tummy. Hmm, not much was ever revealed about these char.s. I guess I seized the image and my imagination just went wild filling in the blanks. Did the same with your 'baby'. I've drawn him a lot. I'm really happy you replied to my question, I'm even happier with the answer to the questions I didn't ask. I'm dying to know this 'weakness' and I have to wait two years to find out. That sucks!!!!! Like somebody telling you they got your B-Day present two years in advance. (Angel makes a terrible face and turns to Techwolf) Okay, start pelting me with the kumquats, it might take my mind off the subject. Tasty little things, too. Here (tosses a dark purple object to him) It's a passion fruit. They are great. (Makes a face during Prodigy mutters in exaggerated English accent 'I am a fiya stahtta') Eww, it is evil Bozo the clown, but I'll cope. At least it isn't Marilyn Manson. (Whistles at Carrabosse during her dancing and shakes her head at the nimble TLO) Okay, I just don't want to see you hurt. ...Trying to get over there Claris but I'm having trouble, every time I click on the html it say it can't find the application. Boogle! Hey there!
wow! this whole page is made up of "renaissance men"!(i use the word man to get the point across, as that is the phrase, please don't think me sexist!*grin*)
midori> please do send the titles! i would love to read the books, seeing as i am very much into the theatre (assistant producer at Bermuda's only professional...well, semi- pro... repertory theatre *grin*) and would very much like to broaden my horizons! We're a little bass-ackwards down here in regards to bookstores etc, but i WILL find a way to get them! BTW, i am writing my "BTown autobiography" and was thinking of a character much like you described as Long Lankin... may i use him? it's not a huge part, no real characterization, just an important one, and i need a haughty highborn.. i was going to just have a nameless character, but i think an established one would work better. if not, i understand, i have a couple of comic strip characters that people have totally missed the point with and used, messing up so bad that they were unusable... what i am proposing is not quite as bad *grin*, but i'll understand if it's a no...
shadesong> "knights of ghosts and shadows".. i read the seqel first, about a year ago, and thought i'd read the backstory! *LOL*
puppets are VERY cool! i did a course on puppetry years ago, and am hoping to get back into it down here... i love all the styles described, but have to admit (with a slight blush) that Jim Henson's work is my favorite... must be a nostalgia thing!*grin* on a similar note, has anyone seen mamenchanz? (i know i spelled THAT wrong!!*LOL*)
Nathan> needs be, i could post some of the stuff in my directory and help out with upkeep, if you's like... it would be a pleasure...
re: the movies> GODZILLA!!! oh, YEAH!!! Mothra has to be one of my all time favorite characters... bar none!
*stickman sneaks over to the stereo and slips on his Kennel Boys disk. Hoping you'll like it.... he does sound for them.... Bermudian band...*grin* (shameless plug!!!)
well, that's it for now...
PEACE!
paper angel> you gotta get down here and try Loquats!!! beat the pants off of kumquats! (although they can't compete with the name!!*LOL*)
Angel, if you remember, I said I'd write the fruit pelting into a story.. :) Besides, I wouldn't even think about covering a friend in fruit if I could help it.. I can't eat fruit, I hate it, and I wouldn't subject a real friend to that kind of torture.. :) And as far as Prodigy goes, it was the only thing I could think of to dance to.. Most of my techno stuff isn't really "danceable".. ((TW looks over his collection and sees Information Society, Lords of Acid, Moby, Robert Miles, etc.. Oh wait! *FWAP* I forgot my favorite song to dance to! TW puts on the Radio-mix of Cotton-eyed joe and starts to do fancy footwork around the room...)) Stick: Amen to the Henson!! Although, I think the muppets died with Jim.. Brian's trying, but it's just not the same.. TW starts to sing.. Some day we'll find it, the Rainbow Connection, the lovers, the dreamers, and me.. All of us under it's spell, we know that it's probably magic.. Have you been half-asleep? And have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name.. Is this the sweet sound, that calls the young sailors? The voice might be one and the same.. TW looks around and decides to stop singing and go back to dancing.. Erp.. Sorry for that musical interlude there.. BTW, Didi, (Carabosse) Where is this Atchin' Tan of yours located? Good coffee shops are always a necessity, especially since I'm feeling the hurt of having one of the few good ones around me die recently.. Anyways, enough rambling for now.. TW
*getting misty from the song* i agree completely... the art director for the muppets is a Bermudian, by the name of Michael Frith, a wonderful man, and i have the honour of being a good friend of his son, so i have a real connection to them (never mind the fact that i am the same age as sesame street! *grin*) but michael quit a while ago, due to the change in direction that the company took... i still love it tho'!! on a similar note, Michael's neice owns the BEST coffee shop on the island, and if any of you get to Bermuda, look for Rock Island Coffee, and you'll probably find me there, sucking back on a quintacap (5 shots of espresso in a cappucino) come on down, i'll buy you a mocha! *grin*
Street theatre, particularly the commedia really appeals to me. I love farce and slapstick and the way the troupes used to use a few standard plots to satirize the events and notables of the day. On top of that, I'm a fan of Raphael Sabatini, the man who wrote Scaramouche ( as well as the Sea Hawk and Captain Blood), and Scaramouche centers around a man on the run who hides out in a commedia troupe. If you get a chance try to see the old movie, which has a lot of great slapstick, the most modern relationship I've ever seen in a 40s movie, a great leading man in Stewart Granger, and the longest sword fight in screen history. So, if there's a troupe forming, I volunteer. Plots, a little acting, a lot of gags, backdrop painting, you have but to ask.... Okay, I'm finally getting my Bordertown persona down. I live in a cold water flat near the Mock Avenue bell tower, and I sometimes slide the gang there their substances of choice in exchange for being allowed to sit in on figure drawing sessions. I make a miserable living writing stories about my friends and enemies in Bordertown and selling them back in the world as fiction. I am always to be found at the counter at God Moms or any of the other soho nosheries, knocking back tea by the gallon and scribbling in my notebooks. The reason I write in public is because there's no place to sit down at home, the place is floor to ceiling books, and also because I desperately want to be interupted. Talking about writing is infinitely more fun and a heck of a lot easier that actually doing the work.... I will be a frequent visitor to the warehouse/dojo, and probably eat you all out of house and home.... Midori, thank you for joining our discussions. Your presence will keep us all on track. Nathan, thanks for archiving. Now I no longer have time to do the dishes while the page loads. Well, this is getting way too long. Hey, but who cares! We've got space now! YAY! ... Oh, one more thing, you find the faerie spirit in the strangest places. I was listening to a country station the other day and heard Dolly Parton of all people, doing a song called Jolene. I can hear you gagging already, but if that song isn't a human girl begging a fair elf temptress not to steal her man away, I don't know what is. It's so country its England, and it catches you... right there. Amazing. Okay, bye. I'm done.
Stickman: Let me recommend John Rudlin, COMMEDIA DELL'ARTE, AN ACTOR'S HANDBOOK..as *the* primer for actors about how to approach the Commedia as an actor. There is both history, a description of all the stock characters, the particularities of the masks and improv exercises for the various masks. It's a wonderful book and recently republished by Routledge. If you only get one book this is it kids . I hate to give you a flat no on the use of Corwyn...but I need him in my work. Can I instead coax-and-assist you in developing another character that might serve your purpose as well? Corwyn in my mind does have a following and isn't alone in the way he regards the human world...throw out what you need, I'll bounce back suggestions.. and then let's see where that gets you. You might be amazed to find out who is hiding in your own pysche! Ciao ragazzi
Hi hi hi... re anime: yes, I love Battle Angel too! And anything Takahashi. I'm currently collecting Maison Ikkoku.... have y'all heard that she has a new series coming out? stickman: pick up "Bedlam Boyz" by Ellen Guon if you like that Lackey series. It's about the two healers. TechWolf: do you have the cassette single for Cotton-Eye Joe? I like Armand's Do-Si-Do Mix better than the radio mix. :)
You want dancing music? I got your dancing music right *here*. ^_- That's what I've been buying lately...
Paper Angel: You're probably using an old version of Netscape that doesn't have the telnet plug-in. Downloading the newest version will more than likely fix the problem.
Regarding Misty's urban fantasy books, don't forget the SERRAted edge series. Same 'universe' as KoGaS and the others, but different setting and characters (though you may spot references). They include Born to Run, When the Bough Breaks, Wheels of Fire and some others. Some people claim they're a bit juvenile, but I enjoyed them. Hey, elves and race cars, can't miss...
Allllright, people, it *is* New Year's now! When was that Dragontown parade again?!?
Shade: I've got the CD single, and yes, it's got the do-si-do mix on there..
Optimally, I've got two on there I like, but I'd like to mix them together..
Unfortunately, I don't have that capability.. oh well..
Claris: I got Angel up and running for the mush last night, so no need to worry about
it anymore.. Should be fine.
TW
hey! wow, a lot's been goin' on since the last time i visited ya'll...:) it's great to hear everything's goin' so well--new orleans is gettin' crazy... what i wouldn't give for a nice little spell to send me back to b-town for mardi gras....sigh... (drunken tourists are just not my idea of fun!)
i know i'm a little behind the times, but yea! for fanfic! can't wait to see what everybody comes up with... maybe i'll even try to write down something about me...hmmm...well, we'll see!
hey, stickman! i just saw the pic you did--i love it! :)) way kewl!
catch ya'll later (busy little elf...). gotta go find myself some nice flammable things--that itch is coming back... (btw, jingle, did you ever catch that mouse? :))) )
by oak and ash,

Y'all should have complained about the page getting too big a long time ago. Send me email anytime there's something that concerns you about these pages.
I've gotten another letter from Terri about Btown music. I'm still tracking down weblinks, but y'all can see it now.
I am going to show my ignorance here by asking a few questions about where all this creative energy goes... Am I right in assuming there are roughly three groups producing here...a group of people interested in writing stories, which will be found where when done? a group of people who have developed B-town personas and then find a place(?) in which to essentially perform these roles in a sort of improv? (is it real time...or does one add to the thread?) are the scenarios laid out before hand or does it depend on who shows up at the site? (and where is the site everyone goes off to?) and the third group which is developing a more graphic-arts approach, a scenographers B-town in the Amush (which I can't seem to get into... is my netscape too old?) In which case is that a visual experience, with various performers arriving to do scenes? So do we have a sort of on line theatre here, with set designers making back drops and rooms and writers scribbling away in the wings? Many thanks for any future enlightenment.
TechWolf, thanks for helping out the Angel. ^_^ I'll be looking for you.
Someone else can probably answer Midori-sama's questions better, but AFAIK, we don't have anything really organized on any of the above yet. A number of people have written/are busy rewriting fanfics, and we're looking for which site to host them (right?). As for the MUSH, if anybody's having connection trouble, it may be a) an older browser that doesn't have the telnet plugin (error message something like "Application not found") or b) the fact that the MUSH's new connection still has some kinks in it, and it may take you several tries to connect. If you get a "connection failed" or "host does not reply" or something similar, this is probably the problem. They're working on it. The MUSH is a realtime, on-line, text-based environment based on consensual RP. It is not a MUD, wherein one goes around beating things up! Until we get enough people and then work out what we want to build fiirst, it's going to be pretty much social instead of RP-driven. If I can answer any more questions, please let me know! (And if the above DIDN'T answer your questions, let me know that too!) ^_^;;
midori> re: corwyn: no prob, thanks for the offer of help, i truly appreciate it! the character i need is basically a highborn that... well, doesn't HATE humans, but just looks upon them with severe distaste. someone that would almost go into cardiac arrest when he found out about Orient's finding magic, because he looks on us as not worthy of magic.. that sort of thing. sound feasable? i would be incredibly honoured if you'd name him/her. thanks in advance.
i guess i would fall into the graphics portion of the groups, the writing, too, kinda, but mainly the picture bit.*grin* i DO have a strip, but i haven't put the copyright stuff on it yet, so i can't post it. soon come, mon!
just a question for all, if Faerie came BACK, do you think it's possible that someone has really old fey blood in them? it would be severely diluted, but what do you think? just a thought. y'think it might be a possibility?
if no-one minds, i could keep up the site for all the fanfic, if you want. i run my own webpage design/illustration company, so it wouldn't be a hassle. let me know (it would also mean that i get to read it all first!*grin* ) actually, the more i think about it, the more i'd like to do it, so if no-one has any objections....
one thing, i have used up all my email addresses with geocities, so i WILL need someone to get a site there (or somewhere else) and get me all the info. if i DO do this, it will be a group effort, and any suggestions etc will not only be considered, but put into effect. i wouldn't want it to be MY site, but OUR site. ah, well, i am rambling... (nothing like a train of thought post, huh? *grin*)
PEACE!
midori> BTW, i always wanted to do "Demon" as a strip... not the whole thing, but maybe a couple of scenes. would that be alright with you? just for fun, and as something that i have always wanted to do...
Stickman: whose to say faery ever *left* ? In Iceland, highways are rerouted around site commonly believed to be occupied by the fey. And I hold a candle for the old tale that said faery were those angels that refused to participate in the war of angels...and in the end their neutrality cost them a place in heaven as well as hell. They were driven into nature and there remain until judgement day (which I don't think yet has happened.)So who's to say that they haven't found a way to while away the time by becoming involved both for (Farrel Din)and then against (Corwyn) in human lives... I would be delighted to see a a strip of DEMON done...give me the weekend to think of your highborn...I'm lousy at names and usually need to wait until they pop up on their own...Ciao ragazzo
midori> good point! i will have to see if i can work that in! i will get to work on DEMON as soon as i get a chance... first week of a play (Shirley Valentine) so i am up to my eyeballs in setpainting etc... probly have a page by next week.... i really like the idea of the fey being angels... very cool concept... never thought about it like that... BTW, thank you for saying no to corwyn... it has taken me in a whole new direction, one that i am a lot more comfortable with... thanks...
claris> i thoroughly enjoyed the SERRAted edge stories... good readin'!
PEACE!
(TLO grins, then disappears back into the loft before reappearing downstairs) Hrmz... the idea of elves being like, sort-of-but-not-really fallen angels *is* pretty nifty... but that kind of origin makes me think that they'd be more distant and less like they are in the books. Somehow, I can't imagine an angel doing stuff like what the Ticker did, etc. Ah well. Feel free to ignore me -- it's 1:30 in the morning. :) I've got a question that's been burning for a long time -- what would you think of an atypical character? Ya know, like Wolfboy, or is that one too many 'uniques'? Because I've already made a few stabs at writing a story about an unique character, but I'm not sure it's gonna work. :/ Ah well... lemme know what y'all think. Hey NRL -- read yer story, liked it. I'll give you more specific comments when I'm more with it, K? :)
TLO, glad you liked it. Tech wolf, favorite anime: Porco Roso(sp?) Kiki's Delivery service, Totoro, and anything by that guy, what ever his name is. There is no one better anywhere at capturing the feeling of flying and the feeling of a summer's day and a summer storm. Amazing. And the characters are really good too.More later. Sleep now.
Claris: many thanks for the information on the various developing sites. I keep getting a no application found but I know I have the most recent Netscape--so I think it's rather a problem of owning a masarati and not knowing where to put the key in. I'll work on it! TLO: take a look a the current concepts of angels..from Michael to those women on T.V.--even the darker angels as they appear in the characters of serial killers on the new shows...feels to me as if we have brought the idea of angels very, very close to home, resembling us, our weaknesses and our strengths far more than they used to. As to developing another "unique character" I say why not? But I would also add that fantasy is more fun and interesting if it is used as a vehicle to say something. Whatever fantastic qualities you put into a character should animate it, move it into different directions in a story, and bring us as readers, or fellow performers in a scene react. Laura's demon drives the story, but it is more than just a neat thing about Laura..it becomes an expression of that potential available in all of us, and a creature we learn to excercise (not exorcise)in our growth...so if you are thinking of someone unique...it's gotta be because you have something to say that doesn't find an easy translation in the world we know...match that idea with an image that can both express and drive itself around in a story and you've got a great character. Stickman: "nella bocca del lupo!" which is the italian commedia dell'arte way of saying "break a leg" on your upcoming production..it means literally "in the mouth of the wolf." Ciao ragazzi.
Wow.. a lot to keep up with.. well, let's get this show on the road:
Midori: You're pretty much correct in your judgements of the group, although I'd simplify
things into these three groups: Those that are just fans of the books and are here for that alone,
Those that are fans of the books and write/draw about them, and Those that are fans of the books that
are here to Role Play. (Then there are those like me who do all of them! ;) Some of us are writing/drawing stuff,
and some are setting up the Mush for Role Play. Yes, almost all of us have created Border personas, (although
mine isn't a persona, it's just my normal personality)
At the moment, there currently is no site for fanfiction,
and the matter is being discussed. Nathan's offered to hold the fanfiction here, but he doesn't have
the time to actively maintain the site. I have a 6 meg space on a reliable system, as well as the time,
and I have offered to host the site. Stickman has offered too, but it seems like he would need a site to
put it on, so, Stick, grand gesture and all.. But I think basically it'll be Nathan or Me. I'm just waiting for
confirmation. Also, as far as the mush goes, a MUSH is a Text-based (no fancy pictures for us!) Role Playing
system that occurs in real-time.. We can talk, etc, and we exist as characters in a text based world (the rooms
and settings are described in words as we enter) That is the role playing aspect.. The world is currently not created,
so yes, you could say that there are behind the scenes backdrop makers.. (Claris, Dark_Shneider and I) Hopefully this
should clear up the problem with the mush. Midori, if you're using Windows95, go to netscape, options in the menu bar, general preferences..
Then click the "Apps" tab, and under Telnet application: type c:\windows\telnet.exe (this should clear up any problems for the telnet client..)
Now, the mush has been having problems with its domain name, so either click this link ANIME MUSH or
in telnet, under host name, type 199.245.105.29 and under port: type 6260 That should get everybody there who wants to be.
NRL: Porco Rosso, by H. Miyazaki.. excellent! Totoro has the best musical score I've ever heard,
and Rosso's plane designs are brilliant! I read Rosso as manga, and I loved it! (Yes, I'm a huge otaku and could prolly tell you all you need to know.. ;)
Midori: Your analysis of the stories are excellent. Yes, they need to say something or have a purpose..
Laura didn't turn into a demon because it was "neat," and Ron didn't go to everyone's favorite
lapdog because it was an interesting plot device.. That's what I love about the Border, is that you guys (The authors)
seem to still be able to hold on to that magic of what it is to be what we are.. the outcasts, the wierdos,
if nothing else, the YOUNG. I admire that a lot, to feel that people like you and Will Shetterly still
understand what it's like to be young.. (Youth in the mind? Then you guys are just as young as I am! :)
Basically, that's the pull of the border.. Like I've said before, Ron's life
could've been pulled directly from mine.. I sympathized with him in NeverNever, for I too am
a 19 year old virgin and understands what he went through, the loss he felt at losing his brother,
(yes to that too.. ) So yeah, those books and stories are like having close friends always there
to say, "Hey, I've been there. I understand." And that's why I write. I feel as if I have something
important to say to the world, and that by writing, I might eventually bring it out. I didn't get hooked
on the books because they were "neat-o keen-a-riffic" urban fantasy stories,
but because the authors (boy it feels wierd talking about somebody distantly now that I have direct contact with them.. :)
anyways.. because the authors wrote about topics that were important to me: teen pregnancy, drug use,
love, outcasts, racial tension, you name it, it's in there somewhere. And for once, it felt like
someone understood *me*, and maybe had been through the same types of experiences. To me, the amazing
thing is that it's not just my "80's generation" that it talks to, but it's totally timeless..
I mean, We've got people here in there 30's who were part of the punk movement,
you've got people in your 20's, and you've got me, who's 19.. Yet we all are here
for similar reasons, have the same sort of mindsets, etc.. I think that says a lot
about the quality of the books and stories, if it can reach across age groups like that.
yeesh.. what a mouthful.. Once again I pulled out that soapbox to rant on one of the
few things I care about deeply.. Hopefully that should cover just about anything.
I'm hoping that this *should* solve all your mush problems,
and sorry for bending your ear so long.. Hopefully we'll have the beginning
of a fanfiction web site up shortly, and we'll all be happy. :)
TechWolf
Techwolf> hey, no probs with you hosting... but if you need any help with coding etc. let me know...
i agree with you on the reason that we all like BTown, outcasts and all... but there is also more to it... the writing... these are some of the few books that i have finished, then started reading again. they are like watching a movie, what with the pictures that the words cause to form in my head... this is because all the writers are of a superior quality, and know how to tell a story with pictures. whenever i read these books, i HAVE to go to my sketchbook and start drawing. character sketches, buildings, whatever... they inspire you to be creative, due to the fact that HERE is a place where we all fit in, and we want SO bad to be a part of it, we just start writing our own stories. my persona is basically me as well, like you. i think it is because we want to be a part of BTown so bad. it is like home.
(speaking of rants... sorry...)
midori> thanks for the support... the play went REALLY well... great audience, technically good.... we're all happy with it....*grin*
peace.
Well I'm new in town but I already know the whole story. Hello everyone from my little part of B-town. I have my persona identity but im just not ready to let it out. Im really exited to see everyone on fire with tons of posts everyday! That really inspires me. I do have a questionfor anyone who's willing to anser. I went to the ANIME MUSH and nothing... i did connect first as a guest ...then as a charcter. But there was no one there. Whats up?? And secound what can we currently do on the ANIME MUSH? Can we chat? send posts? this question has been asked before in many ways ..but now im asking in my own way. Im loosing sleep here with this ANIME MUSH thing.....I'm afraid im missing all the action!
musicman> welcome....
(Shaking her head at all the words Techwolf managed to wrap his lips around) I need to squash this quiet nature of late... or I'll never get anything said. For awhile there, I just had to keep looking around, because I kept thinking I heard my name. Sounded like people were talking about me but they were being so open I figured it couldn't be. It wasn't, thankfully. I think angels are very valid as a modern version of the fey. I find they are incredibly useful metaphors but never really thought about that aspect in my own writing until a few days ago. I have always loathed the pictures of angels with wings and such doing good deeds and being cute. However, when used realistically they are converted to incredible creatures. They represent ourselves driven to either extreme, and extremes do tend work well in stories. >>Midori, I got the same message until Techwolf helped me out. Now I've been on the title page. So it is possible! Just prepared to be underwhelmed at first, if you are expecting graphics. I haven't played yet, but I am going to try tonight. We need to post a time (in EST since the board is in EST) when we can all jump on and interact. I suggest a Fri. or Sat. night around 9pm EST. I understand this is prime internet time so please feeel free to make a better suggestion. I am at a loss.
okay, I've even managed to create a character on there. I'm on under my middle nam, Ngaire. I couldn't see what I was typing so I went with one word rather than screw up on a dicey double shift name! ;)
I'm starting to think I'll never be on with the rest you cats. I never seem to get online until its one or two in the A.M. (pout) But if a regular time window seems to emerge go ahead and post it. I'll try (crossing my heart) to get there.
::a mad jingling drowns out all sound as the flame-haired *halfie* ((mun here...She thinks she is !!!!)) runs up and jumps upon the Dancer House kitchen table... wavers Hibees to all, especially Stickman and TechWolf....Especially, Especially tp Flik and Rave...:: Tech, my mun says you can always backdoor it to AOL and ya should' cause we're havin' a blast!!!!! ((mun again...Crymmsun is actually Lankyn's wife)). Stickman, wow thanks dude, you seem cool too, and of course ya can come for coffee, we stock up on it when we go to the world for Coast Con...we even got Flavors!!!!! Ms. Snyder, it is way cool that you are posting here, Demon was one of my favorites...tell these people the truth about the B-town books...I have told them before that all authors aren't human and this place really is here, I mean why else would it seem so *real*? (( Ms. Snyder...I am one of about 16 people, Flik and Rave are two others who post here, who Table top game B-town and our own characters....we write stories about our characters, play live action Horn Dance personas at Conventions (complete with a dealer's table of wares we usually sell in Trader's Heaven)and are now playing B-Town characters in the AOL Realms of Rhydin..Some of these things we have been doing for over a decade when the books first came out))...Oh Flik...o'course I got the wittle mousey...::bears her fangs in her best *Chesire* grin:: When ya comin' home...::pouts:: and Rave too? I miss ya...::lies upon the table top and curls up one eye open slightly:: Nap Time!!!!!
Hmm...had a little time and so dug back into the archived postings. Still trying to sort everybody out...came up with a few random thoughts: Paper Angel-- I'm wondering if you've read a novel called "THE BONE PEOPLE". It's by a wonderful Maori author, Keri Hulme. It won the Booker in 1985. Though not part of the fantasy genre, Hulme makes a solid use of Maori fantasy in her most amazing novel. Tech Wolf: hey, you're almost in my old stomping grounds! I'm a Madison townie..went to highschool there, left home at 16 came back a couple of years later and went through undergrad and grad. school at UWM. Miss the terrace big time. Stickman: another book has occured to me that you might find useful...actually any one involved in either writing, or improvisational story telling would find useful. It's called IMPRO by Keith Johnston. It's a brilliant book on the use of creative spontenaity in improvisation. There are all kinds of excercises in role playing, and (I find this most useful) in instinctive storytelling--or the ability to trust your creative impulsses and libertate them to drive a story...whether on your feet as in improv or on the page as in writing. Best of all is the last chapter, "Mask and Trance" on the really magical transformative power of mask work. Sometimes I don't know which I prefer: the magic involved in producing a "living mask" (one capable of transforming the actor...and you know a dead mask when you see one...pretty maybe but sterile) or the magic involved when the actor/actress is transformed by the persona of the mask. I saw this once. I had built a pair of masks for a Yeats production...the actors knew their lines cold without the masks on...but when they put them on, they forgot the lines...the director told me it was because "the masks" hadn't learned them yet. A week later not only had the masks learned the lines, but the whole tone and cadenceof the actor's speech had changed dramatically as the masks took over. Jeez..I love that kind of stuff. It's makes great stories. Ciao tutti.
Hiyas...Re. the MUSH--I'm pretty much on any chance I get. I'll be looking for you people. One note: If you can't see what you're typing, you need to turn LOCAL ECHO 'on'. In your telnet window, it's probably under something like "Terminal" (possibly DISPLAY), then "Preferences" (or OPTIONS) and mark the Local Echo box. Good luck!
What I am doing with my B-Town creative energies: Well, off and on since I first read Borderland (and I was the same age as the characters), I had just gotten into roleplaying games. So we immediately set to playing our own B-Town scenarios. And writing shared world stories about our characters. Many a pleasant summer was spent in the parks of Seattle talking in character and being silly.. :-) Now, older, I am writing stories to express the youth in me that remains. Maybe it's a sign that I haven't grown up, but I still understand the characters. Empathize, not sympathize. I like to write, and the Borderlands offer much in the way of a good setting and feel. Modern Urban Fantasy is one of the best sorts of fiction for me to read, because it reminds me of the joy and possibility in real life. Seeing with eyes attuned the fey aspects of life. :-) I also still play roleplaying games, both the live-action improvisational style as well as the sit-around-the-table games. I have lots of friends who are either still interested in B-Town or they've just now gotten sucked in by the others and think that they'd like to spend the Spring/Summer being goofy B-Town kids around the city and at the local science-fiction conventions. We used to play a lot of Vampire games, but now I am seeing a search for something more True, I guess. Less darkness. So anyway, I will share my stories with whoever wants to read them, either on the Webpage or my own little self-produced booklets. My friends and I have run writers' groups before and we do anthologies pretty frequently. I will make compilation tapes of Bordertown music and trade them with others of similar interest. Just hanging out having fun.
carabosse> i would LOVE to read any stories you'd be willing to share... (god, i am DYING for something to read... one of the few downfalls of living in Bermuda)
Jingle> *grin* flavoured coffee? ummm... ick... i need the real stuff... sorry... working in a coffee shop, i learned that flavoured coffee is actually the crappiest coffee they have, sprayed with the flavouring. unless you were referring to syrup that you add to good coffee, then i am there... *grin* if not, i'll bring some celebes kalossi, or sumatra mandelhing.. (the closest thing you'll get to quality Jamaican blue mountain for less that $50 a pound) in any case, i'll be there...!*grin*
midori> i will be trying to order those books tomorrow... (try being the operative word! *grin*) thanks...
peace
Man, I don't come for like a week and everything gets all crazy-like. WOW! I have no clue what you all are talking about so I guess I'll just talk. But I have nothing to write about. Oh Well. My dad is going to upgrade to Win95 in a few days. I guess that's all that's going on. Oh, there's a new social group. The Slackers. They sit around, do nothing, drink coffee, and write poetry. Sound great? Yeah, I guess.
rayne> sounds like MY life down here!*LOL* well, except for work!
hi all... been a busy beaver, and have put together a basic page for Btown stuff... sort of a temporary site until Techwolf is ready. It's here.
if you'd like to put something on it, let me know through Email, and I'll send it up ASAP.
peace
Well, folks, I'm working on *my* fanfiction and fan art site as we speak. Anyone
who wants there stuff to be displayed send your stuff to me at techwolf@concentric.net
or just do it the easy way.
Keep in mind that this is just my privately run site, and that this
is not a site run by our popular webmaster, Nathan. Whether he puts one up
or not is as yet unknown, so I'm providing my space in the meantime.. (Thanks, Stick, for
buffering for me!) Anyone who has their stuff currently on Stickman's site,
if you want it on mine, instead of resending it, just email me that you want
it on my site and I will download it from Stick's, to save you the trouble.
hasta lasagne!
TW
techwolf> no prob.. i did have an idea... why bother taking it from mine.. why not just amalgamate our sites and put links on all of them.. i don't mind holding stuff in my directory... (BTW, just to stop any confusion with another character, and any copyright infringements, let's call me stickS instead of stick! *LOL* {also, sticks is my REAL nickname*grin*})
Sticks, buddy, that's a nice thought, but it'd be easier just to have everything
all in one place. Easier for one person to maintain one site than two to maintain two.
Besides, as Nathan informed me, (and as I know first-hand,) Geocities is nice
for that SoHo gimmick.. But it's not the most reliable site, and 1 meg can be a little
limiting. I have roughly 5-6 megs on Concentric, and I've got about 3 years and an html
class under my belt as experience.. (Learning Java and CGI shortly, too I hope!)
Also, thanks for clearing up the nick thing.. as you've undoubtedly noticed,
I have a habit of shortening things to the max just to save typing.. ;)
And yeah, since Stick is a copyrighted character, "Sticks" or "Stickman" would
be a better choice. So, Sticks it is.. ^_^ Anyways, once again, talk at'cha
all later..
TW
Boy do I want to get on this mush, but I lack the software. There is no Netscape 3.0 for Mac and I tried to download a telnet application, but don't have the expander to expand it. Arrgh! Alright, enough about my inadequacies. All this will be solved when I corrale one of my tech-head friends into doing it for me. Until then, you can find me here, Godmom's, last booth on the left, with a steaming cup of oolong by my side. Midori, in your facination with masks, have you ever stumbled on Lucha Libre; Mexican professional wrestling? It's like masked theatre, only with lots more hitting. Many of the wrestlers wear masks, usually representing animals, heroes, monsters or sometimes even professions. The names are wonderful, Angel Mortal, Mascarada Sagrada, Psicosis, El Santo, Blue Demon, and one of my favorites, a nightmare for our times, Medico Assassino. They play out simplified stories of good and evil with pleas to the audience when the Ref looks the other way and there is a miscarrage of justice. The masks are incredibly important. To lose ones mask and have one's true face revealed is the ultimate shame, and fans will through their coats into the ring to give an unmasked wrestler a way to hide his face. A feud between two wrestlers will reach its climax when the combattants are so mad at each other that they call for a mask vs mask match where the one who loses the match must unmask and is never allowed to wear a mask again in his career. And though its all faked and planned out before hand, sometimes the wrestlers cry real tears, as do the fans. It's silly and wonderful at the same time, like all the best things in life. Carabosse, I'll show you mine if you show me yours. Stories that is. E-mail me. Techwolf, I do have a question; when are they going to release a legit tape of Proco Rosso? I'm dying to see a good subtitled version. I saw a bad one and a clear japanese one with no subtitles. I want both, together! Well, I've been writing since ten this morning, (a monster movie this time) and didn't stop until eleven tonight, and here I am writing to you! Am I nuts? Gee my butt is tired. Maybe I'll take a walk. Maybe I'll sleep. Maybe I'll read a book. A real book, with a story in it and not just facts. Boy, I haven't done that in too long. G'night, all.
techwolf> no prob with the name.. sticks is good... re: the page.. you got it.. (geocities is at 2 megs now, btw *grin*)
"Through their coats into the ring?" Wow! More tired than I thouht. Make that "throw." Thank you. Angel, went and looked at your drawings on Stickman's site. Very nice. No editorial criticism what so ever. Bye.
NRL: many thanks for the information on the Mexican wrestling. I had never really heard of it before, but a visual memory of these wrestlers in their masks and lurid costumes flashed up in my mind...I really find all of this stuff wonderful food for writing...our preoccupation not only with masks but changeable identities, outside faces and inside ones. Satrical masks that appear to reduce us into sympbols of our excesses (like the fools, the old men, the satyr masks and animal masks) and the ritual masks that expand us, raise us to the level of the divine, like the greek masks. I think they have been underdeveloped on paper in Bordertown...and yet the personas that you have all developed in your role playing have much the same function...except the masks are formed in words. The rite of passage into adulthood also makes use of masks, as though one were trying on many identities before finding the right one...Sara had to let go of her mother's costume, her face and her identity before she had her own, Trasher too had to come out from under his fathers, Laura's demon is one mask within her, and the new story has something of the same about it. I wasn't thinking so much about masks when I first wrote the stories, but it has become an image for me in recent work...the piece I'm finishing now is enormous and full of masks. Stickman: hmm...listen if you have trouble getting the books let's talk about art-for-books swap. I like your comic book style. Jingle: I like you often wish many of the realms that I have particularly loved (including the ones I have written about) really, really really existed. I have contented myself however with a line or two from Gertrude Stein (and it applies to passionate readers as well as writers) "After all, that is, everbody who writes is interested in living inside themselves in oder to tell what is inside themselves. That is why writers have to have two countries, the one where they belong and the one in which they really live. The second on is romantic, it is separate from themselves, it is not real but it is really there." Ciao ragazzi.
I kind of just stumble in here, I was looking for it, I didn't really believe it existed. I shouldn't have been surprised, but it was hard as hell to find the earlier books before Elsewhere. Glad to know the writers are continuing to publish stories of the Bordertown. I have written tons of fanfic on the storyline, so if anybody wants a read, just ask.
Thank you for the compliment on the pix NRL. The one of Ysa Cran is the best, I think, but Zavin is really cute, he belongs in shojo manga (girls' comics). There are pix of Mrs. Wu, Dancer, and Riff Raff too, for any of you with an interest. I gave Riff a mohawk, but it is loose in the pic. I'll be sending Billy Buttons (my other favorite char!!!!) and a couple other original char.s soon. NO, Midori, I haven't read that book but I certainly plan to now. I'm very 'home-town proud'. :) Due to several different requests, I'm writing a fanfic about Paper Angel. This is getting a bit confusing for me, cuz the name is the one I use for a story I have been writing for a couple years now. If I didn't think it would cause confusion I'd change the name. You know, when I first started posting on the board here I had no idea it would become such a regular habit! It is so nice to come here and talk with people who are so suppoertive and kind, genuine individuals are so hard to find these days. Too bad we don't live closer together. But then, that was an endearing trait about B'Town. Everybody was from all over. Even if nobody was from Bermuda or New Zealand, eh, Sticks? The statements about the masks is valid and deep as all get out. Kinda reminds me of words. I remeber one late summer night, me and a friend were sitting on a table under a shelter roofed by grape vines. At any rate we sat there trying to unravel the universal meanings of life when I blurted "You know, words are just clothes for your thoughts." Couldn't get beyond that for the rest of the evening. It was nice to enjoy the night air, the quiet punctuated by the muffled clubs in the distance and a wind chime nearby. My little bit of BorderTown. Oh, BTW, I'm mentioning some of you in my story, not in too much detail cuz I'd hate to misrepresent your characters. See ya.
Allo again...*NICE* work, Paper Angel; and so's Sticks' stuff. I gotta do some b-town art...In the meantime, I do have some new art up on my art section if you want to check that out. I guess if I can find my old barely-started story about December and her kwoon and the whole elven ritual battle thing (?!) I'll post it somewhere or other. Must have started that five years ago, but I had *sigh* no audience, so I never went anywhere with it... I keep having this twitchy urge to draw Deki--or what about manga versions of several of the characters? What do you think?
Later...
Midori> well, let me say that i am flattered by your offer of the books-for-art trade... i would be VERY interested in that! thank you... i also like your thoughts on masks etc... i have always been interested in masks, but always thought of it as "something to hide behind", caused by (now long forgotten) low self esteem, and not as my theatrical nature trying to find an outlet... you have given me MUCH food for thought... again, thank you...
claris> thank you for your kind words.. I truly appreciate them... (especially coming from you.. i have seen your work.. VERY nice!!!)
ALL> if anyone has a story or art that they'd like to get up ASAP, let me know.. i would really like to get them up there...(i'm feeling a little "naked" with only my story up!*grin* my email is above (i'd do another link, but i'm too lazy!*grin*) so sendsendsend!!!!
PEACE!
gads, but I'm nervous..er, hello everybody! I've been lurking around this wonderful site for about a month now, feeling like Ive found home, but having problems getting the gumption up to say anything! There is so much I want to say to so many folks, and I find myself wanting to blurt it all out at once, but I dont want to be pushy.. < DEEP BREATH > OK, I'll just start with this and get out of here; I discovered the Bodertown books when they first came out in the eighties, and I remember the thrill of the new, of feeding a hunger I never knew existed, of finding a place I could completely get lost and explore.. sigh. Awright, enough embarrising myself for now. Next up, I would like to list some music folks I think might go well in Bordertown.. Yers faithfully..
Tennekoe Sharkbreath! (Angel nods at the master of the shadows) I'm somewhat ashamed I never noticed you lurking back in there. Ah, well, welcome in. Nobody bites unless duly solicited to do so and then we might actually enjoy it ;). If you need to make any heart-wrenching or important statements, the soapbox is over there in the corner. Stay for a while and get your strength up before venturing out again. >>Claris, thank you. Draw Deki and I'll die a happy girl. To all of you, I reccomend her site, the art there is gRRRReat! Also, sticks' site is great too, his story is even illustrated. Well, I'm done plugging, see ya soon.
Sharkbait> welcome... come on in... share....*grin*
Paper Angel> again, you are too kind! *grin* EVERYONE>go see angels art!!!!!!! it's really good!!
PEACE!
I have an extra copy of Borderland; looking to trade for a copy of Life on the Border. Email me if you're interested
sticks>> >Blush!< Oh, you...!
Sticks, if your story's really getting lonely, you're free to put my silly ol'poem on. It's not linked to my site but it's hosted there as a single file. ^_^
Paper Angel, I'll see if I can get Deki to pose for me. . . but y'know, she doesn't like standing still...
Guess 'at's about all for today...ouf, me tired. Gonna take a break Thursday and go see Ghost in the Shell on the big screen. Yeah!
Claris, you won't be disappointed. I went to see GitS big screen in Chicago
the first time it came out.. (Along with MST3k) I made special trips just to
see them.. It was definately worth the trip.. Just the opening credits alone,
were breathtaking.. (I still have to pick up the soundtrack..) But then again,
there's just something special about seeing a good classic film on the Big screen.
What can I say, I'm a huge "cult-classic" fan.. Rocky Horror, Animal House, Blues Brothers (One of these
days, I'll have to scan a pic of me as Joliet Jake..) Heavy Metal, Star Wars,
GitS, MST3k, you name it.. It's that big screen magic.. Anyways, enough rambling, Go see the movie..
You won't be disappointed.. (Unless you have an aversion to thinking, that is..)
Keep in mind it's a very *deep* movie.. I have friends who can't watch it
just because it's so deep.. Personally, I love it.. In fact, maybe I'll go downstairs
and watch it tonight.. Ya, I think I will..
To whom it may concern: I've got my fanfiction page up, and as a start, I have
my stuff up along with NRL's.. I'm continually working on it. I'd like permission
from you guys who have stuff on Stickman's page for me to put it on my page
as well, and that way we can have a backup page in case one goes down, (Stick,
that means I want *your* stuff, too!) I'm also planning to put links from
my page to here, Sticks', Claris', and Flik's pages.. If any of you are against this,
let me know now.. :) Anyways, if any of you are curious about me, my story,
or my art (YOU ALL DRAW BETTER THAN I DO SO Y'ALL SHUT UP NOW ABOUT WHO'S ART IS GREAT! :)
than come visit the page.. (eesh, I feel guilty with all these plugs..)
anyways, for redundancy's sake for anyone who was on a UFO all those other times,
it's at http://www.concentric.net/~techwolf
I'm leaning more towards content than looks, so don't expect a pretty page ;)

Hello, everyone, hope your lives have been good so far. My friends call me pixie not because I'm cute and adorable ( I am that) but because of my addiction to Pixie stick, nothing give you the best rush than a pixie stick. Anyway that's probably more than you want to know about me. I first fell for Bordertown in H.S., hey who could pass up a book with an illustration of a punk elf riding a Harely. "Not I." said the toad to the frog. Sorry sometimes I wonder a bit, it adds to my charm. Anyway I been hunting for books about the wonders of Bordertown ever since, a freind looking for some cool gaming sites for this OZ for me and knowing of my love of the Borderlands, gave me the address. So I tip my hat to you ladies and gentlemen and say " How Do" or from the land of rednecks "Hoowdy". Dinging off. *PiXiE*
Wow, this is pathetic, I've popped on three times today. Can we tell it was a slow night? Well, after Fencing anyway... Nice ta meetcha Pixie, which land of rednecks do you hail from? >>Techie, feel free to download any of my stuff, or, I can send you the jpegs m'self.
