This is the first archive of conversation on the Borderland BB, from about 12 December 1995 to 30 September 1996.

Nathan Bardsley <nathan@player.org>

Ok, here's a place for y'all to say things to me, each other, and the world. Have at it!

David Versaw <jhereg@onr.com>

Okay, I can't seem to find half of the Borderland Books, can you help me? I am looking for Double Feature, Elsewhere, and a bunch of books by Emma Bull and Will Shetterly that seem to be out of print, If you could please help me find these books, or tell me where to look, I would be in your appreciate it.

Thank You,
Dave(Fan that can't find books)

Shirley Bryant <catsb@aol.com>

Hi There!!! This is great!! A place to discuss one of my favorite places (Bordertown) and my favorite group of people (elves). I've read Finder, NeverNever, and am currently reading Bordertown. I'm having the same trouble as David, it's very hard to find the other books.

I did find Borderland at a used bookstore but I didn't really like it as much as the others I've read.

Do you know when the new books will be coming out? I can't wait to read them!! Thanks for creating this bbs!!

Cat (an elf lover )

Oz <osbertw@aol.com>

me too! (Just kidding) I've read several of the Borderland books after being hooked with Emma Bull's "Finder." I found most of the books in used bookstores this fall. When will the new anthology come out? And how many stories are in it and does anyone know who the authors are?

Nathan Bardsley <nathan@player.org>

The new anthology is still a long time off. It hasn't even been scheduled for publication yet. As soon as there's more information, I'll let y'all know.

Books that are in print should be able to be ordered from just about any bookstore, the ones that are oop, a used bookstore is your best bet. Some of Will and Emma's books are available directly from them, check out SteelDragon Press.

David Versaw <jhereg@onr.com>

Okay here's a question: How did people like Sticks and Berlin become Dragons?

Nancy Freeman <Nanbigal@aol.com>

I thought Sticks and Berlin were Dragons who became people.

David <jhereg@onr.com>

Nancy, sounds good. I was wondering where everybody was at. Did these Dragons come from the Elflands, or have they been around all along?

Laurel <lakrahn@imho.net>

Someone said they were having trouble finding Emma Bull and Will Shetterly's books. Just wanted to remind folks that Emma's novel War for the Oaks has been reprinted recently by Ace books. If you pester your bookstore they should be able to order it. Else you can order it from Dreamhaven books (send email to dreamhvn@winternet.com.

Jason Jones,TX <>

I too find that the Borderlands series is one of my most cherished collections in my library of 412 Sci-Fi and Fantasy books ( along with Elfquest and The Continuing Time series. ). With a very personable and vivid mode of anthology storytelling, Borderlands creates a place of natural ruggedness but eventual spiritual salvation for both it's characters and readers.

Mark S. <mark@pointbbs.com>

Going through "Bordertown" now. Picked it up because I loved "Bone Dance," and then found that this is something quite different but just as entrancing. Compares well to Charles De Lint's stuff, they seem to be operating in the same type territory. I love this stuff...

Bill Hayes <bhayes@cts.com>

At Last! I was beginning to think Bordertown existed only in my imagination. Nice to know its real. Regards Bill.

Nancy Wallace <darkrose@cybercom.net>

I'm in the middle of _Bordertown_, which I picked up after loving _Finder_. I've also come up with an idea for a Borderland story of my own, and I'm wondering how to go about getting permission to use the Borderland universe. Anyone know?

TIA, Darkrose @}---

Nathan Bardsley <nathan@player.org>

The Borderlands world is very much the project of Terri Windling, who can be reached by writing to her c/o Tor Books. That address is on the homepage here and on the copyright page of every single Tor/Orb/Forge book published.

Nathan Bardsley <nathan@player.org>

Whoops, the Tor address is not on the homepage here. But you can find it on the Tor website.

Jason Jones,TX <>

You can find Borderlands books generally either in used/rare bookstores under Science Fiction and Fantasy or you can write to Tor Publishing for information on how to order Borderlands novels directly from them or from Distribution companies. Look up Rare or Vintage books on INET for Web suppliers. Several of Emma Bull and Will Shetterly's books are currently outdated ( Such as Liavek. ) and cannot be ordered directly from the publisher.

A Question. Does anyone in Borderland know where the Endicott Studio ( Terri Windling's ) is currently located? Tor does not seem to be giving out that information. I believe I heard a rumor somewhere(?) that Borderland's next scheduled novel " The Essential Bordertown " is due to be released early in 1997 but Tor does not have an official release date on it.

David <jhereg@onr.com>

Jason......One of my Border books had the address for Endicott Studio. I tried to get info on some books, but the envelope was marked return to sender. The address was in Arizona. Hope this helped.

Paul Knappenberger <knappenp@interaccess.com>

I'm involved in a project to convert the Borderlands novels and short stories into a MUD world. I have only been able to reach Will Shetterly and Emma Bull, and have their permission to use their characters and locations. Beyond that - MUDs are not-for-profit and a great way to advertise novels in this format. If anyone is interested in creating extensions of the Borderlands worlds, please let me know.

Nathan Bardsley <nathan@player.org>

Terri Windling (and therefore the Endicott Studio) spends part of the year in Arizona and part in Devon, England. If you want to contact her, the best option is to mail it to her c/o Tor Books. There is NO information about the next Borderlands anthology, yet. As far as I know the manuscript hasn't been delivered yet, so there is not going to be an official release date. Early 1997 for it is a guess, and probably not a very good one.

Teresa <teresa@serv.net>

Greetings & salutations; Finally got here Read War for the Oaks many years ago and still have good copy. Have be reacquiring the Borderland series and seem to have them all now. thanks for clearing up the mystery Re: Essential... Having been bugging Ingram for ages about that. Well done Nathan, thanks; I'll check in periodocally. T

Niff <kautz@cs.cornell.edu>

This is a cool idea, I wish more folks knew about it. Tip for Paul - Charles de Lint lives in Ottawa, Canada, and is known to frequent the Spec Fic Bookstore. I think they're listed on the net, if you want to really find him. I found The Borderlands completely by accident, and I think I've got them all now. Definitely try the used bookstores, its worth it!

Mareesa Raennsyr <mrtmh@primenet.com>

I've loved the Borderlands since I read Elsewhere, but I think i'm still missing a few of them. I read on the SteelDragon page that Will Shetterly was writing a book called Tales Of The Dog, or something like that. I have not been able to find a write-up on it anywhere! Does anyone know when it will be out, from which company, ect. Or even what it's about? I thought it might have something to do with the Wolf (okay, so I have a tiny little crush on him. So sue me! I've always liked guys with long hair...)

Love, Lust And Poppydust,

'Reesa Raennsyr

Nathan <nathan@player.org>

Will's next book =Dogland= doesn't have anything to do with the Borderlands. It's a sort of auto-biographical thing, I think set in Florida in the '60s. I believe (but am not sure) that it has been delivered to Tor.

Chris <nekhbet@moose.ncia.net>

Is there any place that has writers guidelines for new Border stories? I'd love to hear from anyone who's tried their hand at writing stories of the border.

Nathan <nathan@player.org>

I'm pretty sure that the anthologies are invite only.

Neale Carter <unjcarter@cc.memphis.edu>

Well, you have no idea how surprised I was to find this place.....

I've been a fan of the -Borderlands- stuff since I stumbled across -Borderlands- a while back at a used bookstore. I managed to find all the books, amazingly enough. In Memphis, where it seems like I'm one of THREE people who seem to know 'bout the Border, that's a minor miracle! Anyway, hi.

Sherri Barras <pnsdb@utxdp.dp.utexas.edu>

Wow! More than a dozen other folks who have also made it to the Border. Does the nature of Borderland itself account for the recurring theme of accidental discovery? Although it's a bit alluring to be one the enlightened ones we need to get these wonderful stories back in print! There has to be a wider audience for fiction this good .

Niff <kautz@cs.cornell.edu>

Slowly but surely, we're getting there! Everyone I've lent the series to has loved them, & gotten into De Lint, Bull, Shetterly, etc. as result. I hope that when Emma & Will were at Arisia (which I missed, due to lack of employment, whaaahhh!), they promoted the heck out of these books! Besides Cons & just generally gushing whenever the topic can get brought up, what else can we do to get these out to the "wider audience"? (A very good idea, btw, sherri.) Any ideas?

Chris <nekhebt@moose.ncia.net>

I didnt mean necessarily writing for anthology publication but more for personal entertainment? Gratification? :) Anyway, If there's anyone who'd like to swap Bordertown stories, drop me an e-mail.

Irielle <Irielle@winternet.com>

Does any know if the Borderlands Mud is a reality yet? I started mudding back near the beginning of '90. Haven't been on much lately with so little free time, but a Mud based on Borderlands would be worth checking out. Thanks in advance from another fan... *iri*

Mark <mvan@ultranet.ma.com>

To all of you looking for copies of the borderland books. I started reading them as they came out the very first time. For the longest time they went off the market and became very hard to find. Now that they are back in print I find most of them in some of the better bookstores. So keep looking they are out there.

Brent <i'm not quite sure>

I've been hooked on the Borderlands ever since I accidentally found Life on the Border three or four years ago at my library. I now have that, Borderland, and Finder, but like so many of you, am having trouble finding the others. Too bad Orient isn't around to give me a hand. This is so amazing! I thought I was the only one out there who had found the Border. It's great to know that there is this little community of other addicts. One day, I will find my way there. Maybe I'll see some of you. May the oak and ash guide your way.

David Roberts <daver@texoma.com>

Help!! I'm looking for the following Borderland books.

Life on the Border/edited by Terri Windling

Borderland/edited by Terri Windling and Mark Alan Arnold

If you know where I can find these, please email me.

David Roberts

Vandellyr Quior <corwyn@sound.net>

Hi! I know it is difficult to find the B-town books. I was searching for boardertown when the reprint came out. My friend has all the books and runs her own B-town campaign. It's a blast! I have wrote to Terri Windling before and it took forever for her to get her mail through TOR but Terri did write me back and toll me that the Essential Boardertown should be out not long after the reprint of B-town. I can't wait. Terri says that there are raves in L.A and San Francisco that create a place like the Dancing Ferret. It's sounds like fun. See you all later!!!!

Nathan <nathan@player.org>

Word has been recieved from Patrick Nielsen Hayden of Tor. The next anthology is moving along, edited by Terri Windling and Delia Sherman. Currently the ms. hasn't been delivered, but they are expecting to have the book out sometime in 1997. This is NOT an offical date -- things may change, and they may change a LOT.

If I can get any more info I will.

Vandellyr Quior <corwyn@sound.net>

Thank you for the information. I am keeping my eyes out as well. Hopefully, the next book will be out as soon as you say. I am really looking forward to more adventures with Billy Buttons!!! Maybe Corwyn (Long Lankin) will make an appearance. I can only hope!!!!

Laurel <lakrahn@imho.net>

Delia Sherman's books are worth tracking down (if you can find them). Through A Brazen Mirror and The Porcelain Dove if I'm not mistaken.

Hello. I think this is really kewl. Well anyway I'm 14 and i'm juz getting into fantasy books. I've only read Elsewhere in the borderlands series and i wuz wondering if anyone could recomend some other good books for me to read. One of my bestfrieds who is 15 and also into fantasy is writting a novel to introduce something about a new for of government or something or other. I dunno. I wuzn't paying attention. =) So if anyone could give me some information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Jana Wright <metisse@nwlink.com>

This is a wonderful site! Some friends and I are about to start a Bordertown live-action game and shared-world anthology of our own, and this is perfect timing. What scares me is that I read Borderland when it came out, and I was pretty much the same age as the characters. Now here it is almost ten years later...

angie <clougha@carleton.edu>

i started rereading the borderlands books during midterm break(2 days ago) and am now feeling completely, wonderfully fey again. i've been wearing my glitter lots, and am hoping to get to the cities to find someplace at least somewhat like danceland or the ferret or something...and i was exceedingly happy that bordertown was finally released, as i discovered borderland about 4 years ago and have been waiting for it(read everything else too...several times). so. nice seeing y'all. beglitteredly yours...

Nathan L. <ripost@aol.com>

Three or four years ago I was in the King's Head Pub in Santa Monica when across the crowded room I saw a tall, beautiful girl with short, dark hair and a brown leather jacket with THE HORN DANCE painted on the back under a depiction of elk horns. Well, before I could muster the courage to talk to her, she was out the door with a gang of friends. I was with friends too, so I didn't give chase. I never saw her again, but sometimes I think, "If I had just followed that girl I might have made it to the border."

TechWolf <TechWolf@ix.netcom.com>

For all those looking for books, I'm adding my insight.. I started out with Elsewhere, (hardback, 1st Ed.) In a dollar store in California.. I then found NeverNever, (Also 1st Ed. hardback) Withdrawn from the public library for $1.00.. Then I went out to Barnes and Noble and Bought BorderTown.. Look in out of the way places for the books about the out of the way places, I suppose.. Anyways, I'll see you all slumming down in SoHo.. Look for me in Elsewhere or at Danceland.. You can't miss me..

TechWolf <WolfTech@ix.netcom.com>

Erp.. I boffed up the email address above.. If you'd like to get a hold of me, you can at any of the following;

TechWolf@sinnfree.org
TechWolf@prairienet.org
WolfTech@ix.netcom.com

Hope all of you are feeling wonderfully fey!

Vandellyr <corwyn@sound.net>

I bought War for the Oaks at Barnes and Noble last weekend and I am half way thru the book!! It's great! They also have Finder and Bone Dance there as well. I have read most of the books about Bordertown. I can't wait till the next one!!!!

May <mizumi@soest.hawaii.edu>

Hey, if anyone is interested in reading more about the tanuki from "Demon" there's a great Japanese fairy tale called "The Dancing Teakettle" that is usually included in most Japanese fairy tale collections. There's also a folk song about the tanukis who live near Shojoji Temple who like to get together on moonlit nights and dance and drum on their bellies.

TechWolf <wolftech@ix.netcom.com>

Today, while perusing this b. board, a thought struck me.. Obviously, we all have found the border in one form or another.. I think it would be interesting, if we, the dedicated few, could be in the books or stories as well.. why not try and write up a story about yourself in SoHo or something of that nature, and maybe we could all try and get them together..

I've been working on the thought myself, and have been kicking around ideas about how *I* got there.. anyways, drop me a note or post something here with your thoughts on the idea..

Jorge Delacruz <Jorge64@msn.com>

I loved the first two books, I never knew they made more. Guess I'll have to start looking. Are there other sites dealing with Borderlands?

BellFlower <bflower@annex.com>

Has anyone heard any more info about the Borderlands MUD? Let us know...Thanks!!!

Alex Mayo <alex.mayo@entex.com>

I'm a really huge fan of the Borderlands series, anyone who is interested in the series please E-Mail me!

Ed <EPilszak@gnn.com>

My advice to all: These books are awesome, and I can't wait until the next one, but in the meantime, make your own little corner of the world as cool as Bordertown. The people and places are out there if you look hard enough.

Catherine <cfm@adler.edu>

I found my copies of the books at "Stars Our Destination" in Chicago. It's a sci-fi/fantasy bookstore that carries new and used books. I can usually find whatever I'm looking for. In case anyone is looking for B-town books, you might try Stars. The number is 312/871-2722.

TLO <>

Hmm. I found B-town a few years ago, when I found Elsewhere at the library... then came Nevernever... and a few months ago, I snagged Bordertown as a reprint. As a thorough addict, I think the idea of putting yourself in a B-town story is a great one. :)

Vandellyr <corwyn@sound.net>

Hey, I purchased Finder just last week and Tor has a page in the back (order form) for most of the B-town books!!! So now we all can have our own copies of the books!!!

Jason Jones, TX <NIN>

The Borderlands anthologies series is truly terrific. With personable and textured characters and settings, Borderlands allows the reading audience the opportunity to visit a world of magic parrallel to our own. The situations the players find themselves in are reminiscient of events in our own lives... though their always that sparkle of glamour that the real world just cannot compete with. Kudos to Terri Windling, Mark Alan Arnold, Steven Boyett, and all the wonderful writers of Borderlands!

TechWolf <wolftech@ix.netcom.com>

Well, I started writing my "Life in Bordertown" story. Now I just need to finish it. Anyone else who writes one can feel free to contact me and have me read it, or anything like that. If enough interest is shown, I may even start a collection and post them on my web site or something. And again, You should always be able to find me hanging around Elsewhere or Danceland, and if not, leave a message after the beep at http://www.prairienet.org/~techwolf/

Claris Boii <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu>

Finally, I'm home! The Border books are the best urban fantasy around; I like them so much my main RPG world is a combination of Bordertown and William Gibson. I have a story somewhere I wrote about B-town, maybe I'll try and dig it out. Dream job: Doing the comics version of the books. My favorite was LotB; sometimes, when I'm casting the I Ching or going to my gung fu class, I feel like I'm there for a moment. Feel free to e-mail me, and I want to hear about this MUD!

flik <marymc@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu>

wow, a real live bordertown board! i thought i'd never find this! when i first saw it i thought i'd ask where to find "life on the border" (seeing as how that's the only one i'm missing since i loaned it out to an ex...bad idea!), but now

flik <marymc@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu>

sorry about the end of that last one...slip of the finger on the keyboard! oops... anyway, like i was saying, i was going to ask where to get "life on the border" but i think i've found more than enough info here to take care of that for a while now. however, i was reading about some of ya'll out there who want to write your own b-town stories. well, here's your chance, and you could even be published! now granted, it's not big or anything, but CoastConXX (which will be March 20-23, 1997) is having a couple of writing contests. And the winners will be published in (and will receive) the CHAP book which will be available for purchase by con-goers and will then be read by avid, rabid f&sf fans (and plenty of b-towners, too!--our version of Horn Dance has been attending for a couple of years now and we've gotten quite a following of folks interested in b-town!)

so, anyway, the Robert Adams Memorial Writing Contest is CoastCon's biggest: deadline for submission is March 1, 1997 (mail to--snail mail--CoastCon, PO Box 1423, Biloxi, MS 39533-1423, attn: Robert Adams Memorial Writing Contest.) There are two categories: Fantasy and Science Fiction; Three age groups (1: 6-13; 2: 14-19; and 3: 19 and up); and there are two divisions: Poetry and Short Stories. Rules for submission: 1) Typed, please. 2) Write your name, age group, category, and division on a 3x5 index card and attach to submission. please write only the title on the submission itself. 3) please enclose a SASE with your submission if you wish it returned.

sound good? and the stories don't have to be about b-town, they can be anything you think up! but just think, you could show how much you love b-town by writing your own, original story all about it! there is also the clarion call writing contest at con, which is held on saturday of con and is a one-hour timed writing contest. you will be provided with the topic and/or sentece at the beginning of the hour! (if you'd like the rules for this one, e-mail me for them, ok? and now, yes, i have to do it, a plug for coast con (that's what you get when you're assistant contest coordinator!): this is CoastCon's twentieth anniversary and it'll be great! Confirmed guests so far are Michael Reaves ("Street Magic") and Mojo (spfx supervisor for Babylon 5), and there will be lots more, i promise! And of course, there are lots and lots of dealers, gamers (even b-towners--we do it!), parties, panels, auctions, and more! Other contests are the talent show, the costume contest, the Art ! Contest (winners will also be published in the CHAP book), a photo contest for cons past, and a room party contest sponsored by none other than Horn Dance! come and meet more b-town fanatics! come and party! CoastCon is in biloxi, mississippi--visit our web site at http://www.datasync.com/~sotmesc/ccon.html ! btw, 1997 is the newest date i've heard for "essential b-town"--last i heard it was 1996, before that july '95, then before that january '95...maybe someday! until then, create bordertown where you are! see ya at the ferret!

flik

Rave <indigo3@ix.netcom.com>

Hey Flik, thanks for lettin' me know about this bbs. Much easier to commmunicate than all than dancing around I need to do to get my point across. So, all you round ears want to visit B-town. Come on down and visit then. At least with those of us bringing the luck of the Border to Biloxi and sometimes New Orleans too. That's a great city. Cute little human boys to play with. We're running the room party contest... Great I love a good party and Ferral Din throws the best ones. Anyone who wants likes to costume as a B-towner can enter the costume contest, or may get a hall costume award. Our not so little faction of Horn Dance will be there, why not bring yours too. May your bowl be always full, your bag never empty and may the rythm of the night forever steer your soul.

"Zere some kind of a mailing list, where we could chatter in 'r out of character? We of the shifting Border must needs to stick together, and defend the magickal from the mundane. I have yet to meet any kindred spirits in this area, or even via c-space.

boogel <tbillups@net66.com>

Oh man, this is a dream. Never meet anyone else who has ever even heard of this series. Now I find a whole group of Boarder seekers. If any of you ever find your way across you must come back for us. If there is a mailing list then I want on it. Actually, the Boarder would make a great newsgroup. alt.Boardertown or alt.DancingFerret That would be a great way of keeping up on current info and exchanging stories ect.

Hey Flik, hey Rave....::the sounds of bells are heard through the breeze:: It's great to see so many who are interested in our little corner of the world....Anyway, if you can make it I highly reccomend CoastConXX for a great four days of fun in the world...where just maybe, at least amongst the con goers, we won't feel so out of Space....We have a faction of about 15 "Children of the Dance" that try to make it to CoastCon each year....It never fails though we always have to leave something at the Border before we can press through to our final destination in your world...Two years ago it was my ears!!!! Nevermind that I'm a halfie...Flik and Rave got theirs back back (the spell didn't hold for them) But after all they are Truebloods.....::laughter Jingles:: Come party with us and if ye be good Oh human childe, mayhaps we shall bring ye back across the waters and the wilds....

Our little group of muns has been campaigning in B-Town for almost a decade for some of us...Most of us have been reading and rereading the bools since they came out first. We in turn passed our "obsession" (okay, it's not a heavy one) with Bordertown on to new and cherished friends....We brought them to our future place of residence to introduce them to the other locals (If pressed, I think most of us would say that we believe it is possible). These people are our friends, ( I do not think that any of us didn't shed several tears upon the death of Tick-Tick) the denizens of Soho as well as our many B-Town characters, Live-action Horn Dancers and the characters a few of us have brought to life through pen to paper. When we started this adventure as our alter Horn Dance persona, Mystic's mun wrote a letter to Terri Windling to tell her of our plans and our hopes for using the name Horn Dance and Bordertown. She was wonderful and wrote us back a great letter...We were on our way!

....We really wish we could meet Terri as Horn Dance at one of the local southern Sci-Fi/Fantasy cons that our persona can attend (it's not that easy a trip they tell me) So come if you can and meet Flik, Rave, Jingle, Mystic, Zodiac, Jester (she's our Bard and just the coolest), Harmony, Storm and possibly Autumn (you never know about this one he runs hot and cold) and others of the Horn Dance who might make an unscheduled appearance.....

Sorry if this post was atrociously long, but I was so blown over when Flik told me it was here....Okay, one last thing, this is a legitimate question......Does anyone know if the road system in B-Town was based upon a real city? I swear I find vast similarities to the West Hollywood Hills area....I would appreciate any ideas, I have culled the info from the books, matching cross streets and landmarks etc. I am trying to build a map...not just with the books info, but to add the places we have invented in B-Town for our campaigns....Email me I never get tired of talking about Bordertown (can you tell)!!!!!!

Carry it with you.....

Bill, would the chat channel be open forum for online gaming perhaps. Where we could talk OOC about the books and all, but mostly talk IC as characters we've created in a Bordetown type setting? way kewl! hey rave, hey jingle! great to see you over here, too, now if only we could get the rest of the dance to come here... in answer to bill: i would luv, luv, luv to see an irc for b-town, but can we make it IC? i do so love playing with fellow border seekers! (of course, i think we could get mystic and zodiac and harmony and a few others there, too...) so in answer to your question, my mun would luv to have someplace to send me (i just can't seem to stop lighting those fires.....oops)

of course, it would be even more fun to see all ya'll at CoastCon -- us border children have to stick together! and hey, the room party contest is sponsored by the horn dance--what better way to meet everybody? besides, partying in the world can be a lot of fun--try going to denny's for breakfast right after the spell that was _supposed_ to keep the ears away wore off! you'd think nobody'd ever seen a trueblood before! truly, it was a lot of fun. :))) the pipes and bells are calling, so i must follow! see you at the ferret!

-may your fires never die
flik

Jingle <Crymsun@aol.com>

::jingling is heard, then the sound of laughter:: Bill my mun says a chat room would be great....Me, I am really fond of this computer thing....I want to play, so my mun says an IC room would be fantastic!.....Oops, gotta go.....hidin' from Rave and Flik....::bells jingle away, then stop:: Come to Coast Con, Let's show those mundanes the way to the Border! ::jingling fades:: Carry it with you....Jingle

TechWolf <wolftech@ix.netcom.com>

A Borderlands IRC channel would be right up my alley! although it might be better to have separate ones for IC and OOC.. Lemme know the time and place, and I'll be there! "Truth is beauty, beauty is truth. That is all ye know of life and all ye need to know." -- John Keats "On a Grecian Urn"

Harmony <SkyeVue@aol.com>

::bells ringing gently, she stumbles into the place that the others talked about. He eyes widen in surprise:: Wow! I can't believe it... There are others out there looking for Never Never.. Kewl! ::spots Rave, Jingle and Flik up ahead and giggles:: Hay Wait up! ::glances about and tries to control her mun's excitement at the thought of a chat line to visit:: Stop that! I am trying to say something here and your confusing me. Any way ato all those looking for a little touch of magic check out the Coast Con 20. We have been going for a few years and its fun! If you do go, you will find us HARD to miss.. As a matter of fact.. You will hear us coming from a great distance as well..::grins impishly:: We tend to me a bit noticable. ::shakes a booted foot and the bells ring out loudly:: We bring all the joy from B-town with us when we go! So come play with us! ::wavywaves to Jingle, Flik and Rave. Sends a few huggles too, then searches for some oak & Ash so that she! can get back to B-Town a bit easier:: Oh Yeah.. Hay Bill! My Mun wanted me to tell ya that is you do make that chat room thing.. To write and let her know.. So that we can go and play too! Thanks!!

Jana Wright <metisse@nwlink.com>

I'd really like to see a mailing list because those are easier to keep up with. As to in and out of character, we can just denote that in our subject lines... Does anyone's server provide them with free list space?

Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu>

Yayyy, Jana! This is, of course, an excellent idea, the only question being who'd do it. Since my account's provided by my University, I'd volunteer, BUT I have no idea of how such things work on the actual Being In Charge end, so may I nudgenudge anybody else with a student or academic account?

Does any one know how to get in contact with Terri Windling? While I know that she doesn't take unsolicited stories for the B-town books, I have a story that I think should really be in there and it wouldn't hurt to try. All she can do is say "HELL NO!!!!" and I'll go back to writing in my own world.

Ellen Kushner <ekushner@aol.com>

Delia Sherman & I are purely thrilled you're here.

Look for Terri Windling's new novel, THE WOOD WIFE, coming from Tor in September '96!

Mary Crawley <maryan@scs.unr.edu>

Wow, it's great to see so many Borderlands fans! I got hooked reading Emma Bull stuff. I would be very interested in any sort of chat if someone comes up with one. However, if one cannot be created, perhaps like minded fans could meet at a current chat. WBS or something? Anyway, please e-mail me if there's any info!

TechWolf <techwolf@sinnfree.org>

Well, I just finished writing part one of my borderland fic. In case anyone is interested, I will be posting it to my new web page showcasing all my work at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/4144/ Also, since this page is in SoHo, I decided to dedicate it to and about the Border! I will be putting up as much border stuff as allowed, and I already have a link to this page. (Hope that's okay.. :) if enough people were to show interest or a lot of people are writing borderland fics, maybe I could make a whole page just for that. But please, keep writing these. We're the only ones to keep the border alive.

Jester <ZarraMoon@aol.com>

Well Rave glad to SEE you've found a forum where you can be HEARD!!! Greetings from the Border! So glad to see so many of a like mind.Do any of you role play in games based in the B-town world? We all know it's really cool but lets talk about the books who's your favorite characters? What's your favorite club, story etc...? Tell me a story I promise I won't eat your HEART::: smirks :::

Rave <indigo3@ix.netcom.com>

Nice to SEE you too Jester. I'd say my favorite characters are Wolfboy and Stick. It's pretty hard to dislike Stick, he's helped me in the past. If it weren't for him, I'd never have become part of Horn Dance. I like WolfBoy because he's cuddly and fuzzy. But I don't like hairy men. Guess it's an elf thing. Pretty smooth skinned. it's been a while since I read the books last. One of my favorite stories though, is the one about the girl who went to the border and when she came back she made the little creature and put them around her apartment. Which one is that??? I really love the clothe in B-town, but then again I like clothes. I just like the fashion or lack there of in B-town. Whatever you want to wear is cool. The more haphazardly thrown together the better. Reminds me of the French Quarter. Gotta go, see yo at the Ferret.

Rave

Jana (Still searching for a nickname) <metisse@nwlink.com>

Sept. 4, 1996 Ah, if only I knew Orient. :-) My favorite characters- that's hard to say. I really like Stick, because he reminded me one of the guys in Big Audio Dynamite. I'm partial to the halfies because I am mixed-race in real life and it was easy to identify with them. I had a crush on Orient, I worshipped Tick-Tick, Berlin was way cool... I think Bordertown is still my favorite collection, maybe out of nostalgia. Second fave is Life on the Border for being multicultural. The list of worldbeat bands in the back is great! Oh, and I am wanting to start a habit of sorts that we date our messages. That would make it easier to follow announcements like, 'later this month/year, this book comes out'.

Zodiac <mounshyn@aol.com>

Well, here's where all you Horn Dancers are. Did you guys forget about the concert we have at the Ferret tonight? I must confess that this is a great site to find out about those interested in the Lands. But hey, Flik, Rave, Jingle, and Jester, we have a celebration concert to play. Long Lankin has ventured out of Bordertown to find greener fields somewhere else. What a celebration concert it will be. Maybe even Farrel Din will smile. All you others should come to Bordertown and enjoy the fun. I see in the stars that fun and play will run amuck in Bordertown for a while (now that the vile elf is gone), I'm sure that everyone will have a blast. Just remember, all you new people, don't drink the red water. See you all around. See you fellow Horn Dancers at the gig.

Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu>

Hey, 's'me again...have to say, Deki's way cool...she's the greatest! Maybe it's just because the martial art I study is Tibetan...maybe it isn't! She's made more than a few appearances in my own RPG world, and I won a Shadowrun tourney playing a rigger based on Tick-Tick. (BTW, Gray's the one with the little statue-thingies; she's spiff too.) And a'course Wolfboy... Come visit my page, the Dragonsgate Matrix, it's "http://comp.uark.edu/~ccsmith/"; and be sure to sign the guestbook...and submissions to my zine are *more* than welcome!

Nathan <nathan@player.org> Tue Sep 10 13:07:09 EDT 1996

Jana, let me save you some work. =Poof!= Cheesy date stamps.

TickTick <maryan@scs.unr.edu> Tue Sep 10 17:57:11 EDT 1996

Home again, home again, jiggety jig! A lot have people have written since I last did. I admit some possible hubris in taking Tick's name as mine. Though as the ticker isn't using it at present (gods rest her dandelion fluffed head), I use it on chats. I saw a BBS mentioned in reference to Filk, but not it's address. I'd appreciate it if someone would re-print it! Until then, write on,aAnd please write me if you want to gab B-town!

flik <marymc@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu> Wed Sep 11 15:11:45 EDT 1996

hey, ya'll! i know, i know, i should visit more often, right? sorry, i've been hiding out--lit up somebody's garbage can and found out later they wanted it...go figure! who would want their garbage? i thought i was doing the guy a favor...humans...:)

anyway, rave, the story you're talking about is "rain and thunder." grey is the one who went over the border, but she was human (go figure, silly human trying to get to faerie!) and they caught her on the way out (see, she shape shifts into a little grey kitten) and told her her punishment for coming to faerie was being blind for the rest of her life. the only time she can see is when she's a cat--that's when she inspects her creations to make sure they're like she remembers 'em. can you imagine, sculpting all those little figures exactly like you saw 'em in faerie but not being able to see 'em while you do it? in case you couldn't tell, that's one of my faves, too!

so, hmmmm....let's see, who's my favorite b-towner? (well, other than myself--joking!)i'm not sure. i like grey a lot--must be the cat in me (altho if you want somebody who's really a cat go talk to jingle!) and of course all the horn dancers (stick, etc.)--both in b-town and out here in the world! btw, zodiac, sorry i forgot (humans chasing me with flaming garbage, ya know!)

and my favorite thing about b-town...must be all those cute elvish boys! i do so love corrupting them....and putting bells on them (amazing what you can convince some people to do!)...of course, my aboslute most favorite part of bordertown is, well, what else, the music. i mean, where else would punk folk music be popular? (among other things!)

well, gotta run--things to burn, people to see (or something like that!) see ya at the ferret!!!!! flik

ghost <skanknpkl@ wow.com for now anyways> Sat Sep 14 22:40:10 EDT 1996

Hmmm. Fave B-townies? Probably Wolfboy/Ron/Gone. Maybe Orient or Hale. It's hard to pick favorites. By the way, does anyone know anything about the new anthology? When it's coming out or who's in it or anything? I asked Charles De Lint about it himself (was delighted when he actually replied, felt all warm and fuzzy inside). Anyways, he said he had submitted a short story, but knew nothing about it at all.

TechWolf <techwolf@sinnfree.org> Wed Sep 18 10:31:12 EDT 1996

Favorite B-towners, eh? Well, first off, Wolfboy/Ron is my absolute favorite. Although I think it was because I identified with him so much. Like someone had duplicated aspects of my life and translated them into a character. I also love Grey.. There's something magical about being the only human ever to cross the border..

I think a lot of the reason the Borderlands novels are so endearing is that the authors really seem to have a sense of what it is like to be these people.. To be fey, to be young, have problems, etc.. At least, that's what it was for me.. Anyways, enough rambling, I have to get back to my writing.. I mean, that's what I came to the border for, anyways.. Well, writing, art, music, etc.. I think I'll go write at the Hard Luck tonight.. Anyways, before I go, I do have a question for the rest of you: I would like your opinions as to what happens to WolfBoy at the end of NeverNever.. I'm still debating whether he stayed Wolf or changed back.. anyways, I hope it proves to be an interesting topic. o/~ coming solo to SoHo.. o/~

Claris <ccsmith@comp.uark.edu> Thu Sep 19 17:07:57 EDT 1996

Wolfboy *stayed* wolf, yessiree... ;=[ Hey, Horn Dance, want to be our convention dance band next year? Oh, it was worth a try! We do need one...

ghost <skanknpkl@wow.com> Sun Sep 22 21:57:32 EDT 1996

Wolfboy undoubtedly stayed. The whole ending was him realizing that he not only wanted to be Wolfboy, he really WAS wolfboy.

Has anyone written any Bordertown/urban fantasy fan fiction? If so, I'd like to put it on a fan fiction page I am trying to start. I would love to hear from you.

Long Lankin <LngLankin@aol.com> Sun Sep 29 09:16:28 EDT 1996

::evil smile:: Hmm, and not a mention of me? I am very hurt... I would like you all to know that I have, um... Extended my realm of control to a place called Rhydin in the realm of RDI mulitverse in the kingdom of aol. Should you need any, um... specail items.. Spell boxes, memory balls, anything at all... Please come see me. I will be glad to work a deal with you.

Long Lankin
Fondly known as the Butcher of BorderTown.

Ki Kelly <kikelly@ziplink.com> Sun Sep 29 09:36:21 EDT 1996

This is great! So many Bordertowners in one place. If you're interested, check out a big trade paperback book called SPECTRUM II. It's a compilation of various award-winning and otherwise notable fantasy art. On page 34, there's this great painting of Orient and the Ticker hanging out with the bike on a back street near Danceland. It's called Danceland and it's beautiful! Check it out!

Jingle <Crymsun@aol.com> Sun Sep 29 09:55:00 EDT 1996

::eyes the message above hers suspiciously:: Oh well gotta give him a A for effort, he does desire power, seems B-Town didn't hold enough....Anyway, okay Jester BTW hey nice to see you here, I must admit Flik Grey is a favorite of mine so is Wicker, the whole Rain and Thunder story just gets me everytime. I really love Ellen Kushner's inserts in Life on the Border...also though we don't seem to get along much ::chuckles:: fight like cats and dogs really, I love Wolfboy....I have a real penchant for Laura and Koga and that whole group...I have fought and tentatively conquered my own demons...(sorry Dancers about the sofa arms)I love Ash and the Mock Ave artist's group, being halfie I can really understand Linny's masquerade, but we all need to be who we are ((Julie the mun here>> this coming from one feeling slightly schizo at all the lives I have built in my characters)) Suffice it to say that I love all who inhabit Bordertown, I love living here ((Julie>> I love living here when I can, through gaming and reading the books again and again and again and....well, you get the point)) I've spewed enough for now I will go, there's a sunbeam on our roof at this time of day that's got my name on it...nap time....

Jingle <Crymsun@aol.com> Sun Sep 29 10:04:03 EDT 1996

Hey Flik your on a web page!!!!::shakes her head as jingling is heard loudly:: It's a way cool page, got a link to here too, All of you who want to see a member of the Horn Dance should visit http://studentweb.tulane.edu/~marymc It's really sharp and has a lot of great stuff One of which is our very own Flik!!! ::jingling dances away:: Gotta go catch that sunbeam...::laughter fades::

Nathan <nathan@player.org> Mon Sep 30 12:42:57 EDT 1996

Ki Kelly, I haven't seen SPECTRUM 2 yet, but I believe the painting you're talking about is by Nicholas Jainschigg, and is the cover for Double Feature. The full painting is used as a wrap-around cover, but I'm only showing the front on the webpage.

Nathan <nathan@player.org> Mon Sep 30 12:50:21 EDT 1996

A message from Terri Windling:

"The completed manuscript for the next anthology (THE ESSENTIAL BORDERTOWN: A TRAVELLER'S GUIDE TO THE EDGE OF FAERY) has now been turned in to Tor. It's a fat volume and includes stories by Ellen Kushner, Delia Sherman, Charles de Lint, Midori Snyder, Patricia A. McKillip, Felicity Savage and others."
